- The eight-year Holy Defense , in addition to extensive military experience, yielded significant achievements in engineering and innovation, with one of its key pillars being the Jahad-e Sazandegi War Engineering Research Center, which achieved broad innovations in industrial and engineering fields, including solid-fuel missiles, the Shahid E'temadi project, sonar systems, and the Kheybar Bridge, raising the question under those specific and critical conditions of what processes and frameworks enabled such innovations, a question addressed in this research through a multiple-case study method using existing interviews, books, documents (including images, journals, and administrative correspondence), and interviews with the center’s senior managers and group leaders, where existing innovation models (based on Rothwell’s generations) were compared with the trends identified at the center, revealing that many innovation generations (first, second, and third) paid little attention to external factors in the innovation process—defined as institutions, groups, or individuals outside the internal structure of an organization that directly influence innovation formation or development through interaction, collaboration, or provision of knowledge, resources, or feedback, such as universities, end-users, suppliers, independent research centers, or government entities—with universities in the first three generations typically limited to basic knowledge production and human resource training, a role crucial for scientific advancement but not directly linked to organizational innovation needs and processes, whereas the Jahad-e Sazandegi center, unlike these three generations, actively, purposefully, and problem-centeredly leveraged external capacities for innovation development, with some projects confirming the demand-pull model while others entirely deviated from it, the technology-push model being virtually absent in the center’s projects, and the fourth and fifth generations, though partially questionable, somewhat aligning with the center’s model, ultimately allowing this research to examine Rothwell’s innovation generations’ explanatory power for the center while providing a preliminary assessment of innovation models in a less developed institutional context
