- Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the world. During the last decade driver distraction played a significant role in occurrence of road crashes. Since the issue is becoming a widespread concern in many countries, the main objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of driver distraction on the various aspects of traffic accidents. In this regard, the data source of reported crashes of the United States of America in year 2010 is used. Three main property of crashes including severity, type, and avoidance maneuver are studied. Analysis of accidents severity by generalized ordered logit model indicated that phone usage and in-vehicle distraction increase the likelihood of severe crashes. On the other hand, cognitive and out-vehicle distraction decrease the likelihood of serious crashes. Analysis of accidents types by nested logit model showed that all types of distractions increase the likelihood of run-off roadway crash, collision with fixed object and rear end collision with another vehicle. Cognitive distraction increased the likelihood of collision with pedestrian. Furthermore, cognitive, passenger related, and out-vehicle distraction increased the likelihood of sideswipe collision. Analysis of crash avoidance maneuver by binary logit model indicated that all types of distraction decreases the likelihood of preforming corrective maneuver by driver. Among distraction factors, cell phone usage is the most influential factor on performing a crash avoidance maneuver. The findings of present study highlighted the impact of distraction on crashes. Consequently, driver education according to the results is suggested
