Abstract
This paper assesses thermoelastic damping (TED) in circular nanoplates by incorporation of the small-scale effect into structural and thermal domains. The nonlocal elasticity theory and dual-phase-lag (DPL) heat conduction model are exploited for achieving the size-dependent coupled thermoelastic equations. By choosing time-harmonic and asymmetric form for deflection and temperature change, and solving the size-dependent thermoelastic eigenvalue problem, the damped natural frequency of circular nanoplate is extracted. Abstract
Structural and dynamic properties of ions confined in nanoslits are crucial to understand the fundamental mechanism underlying a wide range of chemical and biological phenomena. K + and Cl - show similar ion mobilities in a bulk aqueous solution, whereas they exhibit a remarkable difference when transporting through an angstrom-scale channel. Our molecular dynamics simulations uncover that such discrepancy originates from the subtle differences in their hydration structures and preferable locations across the channel. Lightweight shell-based lattice structures with various multifunctional applications can be fabricated with limited manufacturing constraints, thanks to the advancements of additive manufacturing technologies. However, there is always a geometric deviation between the 3D digital model and the additively manufactured lattice structure. Controlling networked structures has many applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we consider the problem of pinning control (pinning the dynamics into the reference state), and optimally placing the driver nodes, i.e., the nodes to which the control signal is fed. Considering the local controllability concept, a metric based on the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix is taken into account as a measure of controllability. We show that the proposed optimal placement strategy considerably outperforms heuristic methods including choosing hub nodes with high degree or betweenness centrality as drivers. In this paper we introduce a novel population-based binary optimization technique, which works based on consensus of interacting multi-agent systems. The agents, each associated with an opinion vector, are connected through a network. They can influence each other, and thus their opinions can be updated. A screw dislocation outside an infinite cylindrical nano-inhomogeneity of circular cross section is considered within the isotropic theory of gradient elasticity. Fields of total displacements, elastic and plastic distortions, elastic strains and stresses are derived and analyzed in detail. In contrast with the case of classical elasticity, the gradient solutions are shown to possess no singularities at the dislocation line. Abstract
The stress field of a screw dislocation inside an embedded nanowire is considered within the theory of strain-gradient elasticity. It is shown that the stress singularity is removed and all stress components are continuous and smooth across the interface, in contrast with the results obtained within the classical theory of elasticity. The maximum magnitude of dislocation stress depends greatly on the dislocation position, the nanowire size, and the ratios of shear moduli and gradient coefficients of the matrix and nanowire materials. © 2009 Acta Materialia Inc
