Development of fcc-Al nanoparticles during crystallization of amorphous Al–Ni alloys containing mischmetal: Microstructure and hardness evaluation [electronic resource]

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 604, 16 May 2014, Pages 92-97 Mansouri, M. (Mehdi) ; Simchi, A ; Varahram, N ; Park, E. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the present work, fcc-Al nanoparticle development in Al90−xNi10MMx (MM: Ce mischmetal; x=2, 4) amorphous alloys was studied via non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and nanoindentation test. Results showed that the crystallization of Al88Ni10MM2 alloy occurred by the precipitation of fcc-Al nanoparticles followed by the crystallization of Al11MM3 and Al3Ni phases. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the aluminum precipitates had an average size of ~12 nm with a round morphology. Increasing the mischmetal content to 4 at% (Al86Ni10MM4 alloy) caused a three-stage crystallization process with a change in the size...

    Abstract
While it is well recognized that microstructure controls the physical and mechanical properties of a material, the complexity of the microstructure often makes it difficult to be simulated by analytical or numerical techniques. In this paper we present a suitable approach to compute microstructures within a casting using the finite element technique. This technique allows implementing microstructure data from experiments and equations that describe microstructure as function of local solidification parameters. The comparison of this model's predictions with the ones in the literature and also experimental measurements of secondary dendrite arm spacing, average length and diameter of silicon...

    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2017
    Abstract
Two series of heat-resistant 25Cr-35Ni-Nb stainless steels with tungsten addition and Nb/C ratio of ≈2.6 and 3.9 were directionally solidified under two cooling rates of 23–6 °C s−1, respectively. EDS analysis, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) tests were carried out to show that tungsten as a carbide phase nucleant promoted weak coupled eutectic growth of γ/ M7C3 and decreased the lamellar eutectic colonies. Substantial negative segregation of Ni and Fe and positive segregation of Nb and Cr in tungsten-bearing alloys stimulated the γ/M23C6 reaction and the M23C6 possessed a dendritic...

    , Article Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids ; 1 March 2014, Volume 387, Pages 36–40 Mansouri, M ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Lee, J. I ; Park, E. S ; Varahram, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Al86Ni10MM4 (MM: Mischmetal) amorphous ribbons were prepared by melt spinning on a child copper wheel. Non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of the amorphous alloy was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystallized phases were determined by X-ray diffraction method and transmission electron microscopy. DSC traces were analyzed by Kissinger method to determine the apparent activation energy of crystallization. Changes in the activation energy (Eα) with progression of crystallization were also evaluated by differential iso-conversional method of Friedman. For the precipitation of nanometer-sized Al particles, the activation energy slightly increased with increasing the...

    Abstract
Effects of sprue base size and design on flow pattern during aluminum gravity casting have been investigated by employing different sprue base sizes and using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Calculations was carried out using SUTCAST simulation software based on solving Navier-Stokes equation and tracing the free surface using SOLA-VOF algorithm. Flow pattern was analyzed with focusing on streamlines and velocity distribution in sprue base, runner and in-gate. Increasing well size was produced a vortex flow at the bottom of sprue base which increased the surface velocity of liquid metal in runner. Using a rather big sprue well could eliminate vena contracta, but in-gate velocity was...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Pourhaghani, Arash (Author) ; Varahram, Naser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
AS5U3G and AS7U3G are two prevalent types of alloy which are used in producing cylinder head. In this research AS5U3G alloy is studied. Gravity casting is one of the method of producing this part. Produced porosities in cylinder head casting process, cause leakage in this part. In order to solve this problem, some actions have been taken that we can divide them into quality operations improvement of melt and making changes in casts. The sampling is done in four levels to evaluate the gas porosity and shrinkage. In these levels, pressure and degassing duration and strontium's modifying in a fixed temperature have been evaluated. Based on reports by comparing density of relative samples, it...

Effect of Heat Treatment on Wear Behavior of High Chromium White Cast Iron

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Aalinejad, Davood (Author) ; Varahram, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
It is well known that all crusher tools, which are exposed to wear, must be resistant to both wear and dynamic tensions that can result in catastrophic failures. Tools exposed to heavy tensions should have two opposing properties, which are wear resistivity and toughness. To achieve the best wear resistivity in crusher tools, it is better to have martensitic matrix. During the cooling process, transformation of austenite to perlite occurs and presence of perlite adjacent to carbides extremely reduces the wear resistivity of the work piece. Although because of high solvability of carbon into austenite, stability of austenite in room temperature is possible. Under wear circumstances and...

Investigation on Effective Parameters on Mold Filling of Cast Iron Melt in EPC Process

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nematizad, Mojtaba (Author) ; Varahram, Naser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Casting process with foam is a relatively new process which because of having multiple benefits (like elimination of muscle and segregation line, high dimensional precision and using sand without using glue) in recent years has been considered. Considering that during pouring, melt replaces with sand surrounded foam, successfulness of this method depends on complete elimination of foam model during Pouring for preventing formation of some defects like carbon defects in cast irons, or cold work and porosity in aluminum alloys. Parameters like Pouring temperature, alloy type, foam type, density of foam model, type of gating system, and some other parameters are affecting the way of filling of...

Numerical modeling and experimental validation of microstructure in gray cast iron

    , Article International Journal of Minerals, Metallurgy and Materials ; Volume 19, Issue 10 , 2012 , Pages 908-914 ; 16744799 (ISSN) Jabbari, M ; Davami, P ; Varahram, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2012
    Abstract
To predict the amount of different phases in gray cast iron by a finite difference model (FDM) on the basis of cooling rate (R), the volume fractions of total γphase, graphite, and cementite were calculated. The results of phase composition were evaluated to find a proper correlation with cooling rate. More trials were carried out to find a good correlation between the hardness and phase composition. New proposed formulas show that the hardness of gray cast iron decreases as the amount of graphite phase increases, and increases as the amount of cementite increases. These formulas are developed to correlate the phase volume fraction to hardness. The results are compared with experimental data...

Limiting fault currents in wind power plants using superconductive shielded core reactors

, Article IEEE Power and Energy Society 2008 General Meeting: Conversion and Delivery of Electrical Energy in the 21st Century, PES, Pittsburgh, PA, 20 July 2008 through 24 July 2008 ; 2008 ; 9781424419067 (ISBN) Behzadirafi, S ; Salehfar, H ; Varahram, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper we investigate the effects of superconducting shielded core reactor (SSCR) on the operation of induction generators. Large number of induction generators used in wind power plants generally increase the short circuit current level of the system. The reason is that they provide parallel reduced-impedance paths for the fault currents. Taking advantage of SSCR in wind power plants allows for using these generating units in large numbers with no concerns about the system fault current increments. The study is performed on a test system using the conventional model of an induction generator and a new effective model for SSCR based on its shielding behavior. Mathematical equations...

    Abstract
Various attempts have been made to derive linearized, reduced order models of induction generators. Due to the fact that there is usually numerous number of these machines in wind power plants, these models provide great facilities in calculations, and therefore are used widely in power system transient stability studies. In this paper, some of these methods are discussed and compared and then a method known as "balanced realizations" is used to reduce the dynamic order of the machine. Computer simulation shows that the last method markedly improves the accuracy of the resulting reduced order model. The improvement is demonstrated by comparing the response characteristics predicted by each...
