Effect of organoclay loading and electron beam irradiation on the physico-mechanical properties of low-density polyethylene/ethylene-vinyl acetate blend
, Article Polymers for Advanced Technologies ; Volume 22, Issue 12 , 2011 , Pages 2352-2359 ; 10427147 (ISSN) ; Behradfar, A ; Sheikh, N ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
The influence of electron beam (EB) irradiation and organoclay (OC) loading on the properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) blends was investigated. The samples were subjected to the EB irradiation with the dose values of 50 and 250kGy. X-ray diffraction (XRD), gel content, mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties were utilized to analyze the characteristics of the LDPE/EVA blends with and without OC at different irradiation dosages. Gel content analysis showed that the OC promotes considerably the insoluble part so that the LDPE/EVA blends filled with OC become fully crosslinked at 250kGy; possibly through the formation of further crosslinks between...

Abstract
Given measurement difficulties, earlier modeling studies have often used some constant ratios to predict lumbar segmental kinematics from measurements of total lumbar kinematics. Recent imaging studies suggested distribution of lumbar kinematics across its vertebrae changes with trunk rotation, lumbar posture, and presence of load. An optimization-based method is presented and validated in this study to predict segmental kinematics from measured total lumbar kinematics. Specifically, a kinematics-driven biomechanical model of the spine is used in a heuristic optimization procedure to obtain a set of segmental kinematics that, when prescribed to the model, were associated with the minimum...

Abstract
The present paper demonstrates the performance of the radiation grafting technique as a chemically based surface pretreatment method to adhesion modification of polyethylene surfaces toward the metallic layer. Gamma irradiation over a dose range of 4-10 kGy is used for grafting of vinyl monomers including acrylamide (AAm) and 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP) onto the surface of three different polyethylenes including low density polyethylene (LDPE) and two kinds of high density polyethylenes, namely HDPE-1 and HDPE-2. The grafting yield is evaluated based on the weight increase of the samples. It is found that the grafting yield is dominated by the crystallinity of the polyethylene, so that lower...

Abstract
The kinematics information from imaging, if combined with optimization-based biomechanical models, may provide a unique platform for personalized assessment of trunk muscle forces (TMFs). Such a method, however, is feasible only if differences in lumbar spine kinematics due to differences in TMFs can be captured by the current imaging techniques. A finite element model of the spine within an optimization procedure was used to estimate segmental kinematics of lumbar spine associated with five different sets of TMFs. Each set of TMFs was associated with a hypothetical trunk neuromuscular strategy that optimized one aspect of lower back biomechanics. For each set of TMFs, the segmental...

Abstract
To investigate the effect of short carbon fibre on the tribological behavior of phenolic resin-based friction materials, a reference friction composite holding various ingredients without short carbon fibre, and three friction composites holding 1, 2 and 4 vol% carbon fibre were formulated. The dynamic-mechanical and thermogravimetric analyses showed the increase of storage modulus and reduction of thermal stability, respectively, with incorporation of carbon fibre into the brake composites. The tribological characterizations revealed that the coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate of the friction composites dropped with addition of carbon fibre into the composites. Carbon...

Abstract
According to the great potential of zero-valent iron nanoparticle applications in the environmental, medical, chemical, packaging and many other industries, there is still a need to tailor their production methods. This study reports the production of a hybrid nanostructure based on iron nanoparticles (INPs) produced in/on montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays as an oxygen scavenger and barrier additive in polymeric packaging materials of oxygen-sensitive products. INPs and MMT were demonstrated to have effective mutual interactions in which the MMT host played a chemophysical trapping role for iron particles, causing smaller particles around 10 nm with 6.2 g/m2 higher specific surface area by...

Abstract
Copper anode (∼98%) is widely used to produce the cathode (99.995 wt%) in electrorefining process. These anodes sometimes become problematic from the production line due to the presence of bumps/holes on their surface. To find the reason of this defect, chemical composition of the three casted anodes was determined by the quantmeter analysis. Also, the microscopic and phase analysis were done by FESEM, EDS, XRD, and XRF for three types of anodes bump. The chemical analysis of anodes confirmed a high level of sulfur and oxygen, which have a key role in the formation of bumps. The results confirmed the presence of impurities including Cu2S, BaSO4, CaCO3 and MgCO3, which cause the formation of...

Abstract
Composite friction materials used in the braking system of vehicles are composed of different ingredients (typically up to 20 materials). The overall physical properties of these products are determined by the type and percentage of the individual ingredients in the final composition and consequently, may differ from one product to another. This paper studies the cure characteristics of railroad composite brake blocks during compression molding. Numerical simulations using the control volume/finite element method (CV/FEM) are utilized to predict temperature fields and cure conversion during the process. As railroad brake blocks are normally thick-sectioned parts, a three-dimensional modeling...

Abstract
In compression resin transfer moulding (CRTM), resin flows inside a mould filled with fibrous reinforcement as a result of resin injection and mould compression. This process facilitates the resin flow through the fibrous reinforcement particularly for high fiber content parts. This paper presents the numerical simulation of filling process of CRTM in full three-dimensional domain. A mathematical model of three-dimensional resin flow inside the CRTM mould is presented. An effective elastic modulus is introduced for multi-layer preforms connecting the mould closing speed to deformation rate of individual layers. Control volume/finite element method (CV/FEM) is used and the numerical algorithm...

Abstract
In resin injection/compression molding (RI/CM), a preform often comprises layers of different fiber reinforcements. Each fiber reinforcement has unique through thickness and in-plane permeabilities as well as compressibility, creating a heterogeneous porous medium in the mold cavity. In the present article, numerical simulation is utilized to investigate the filling process of RI/CM in such a heterogeneous porous medium. The filling stage is simulated in a full three-dimensional space by using control volume/finite element method and based upon an appropriate filling algorithm. The flow in the open gap which may be present in the mold cavity is modeled by Darcy's law using an equivalent...

Abstract
Nanostructured hollow polyaniline (PANI) capsules are good candidates for encapsulation of corrosion inhibitors and pH-responsive release when incorporated into organic coatings. In previous studies, the corrosion protection performance of PANI capsules, containing organic inhibitor 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), was demonstrated. The present work studies the influence of capsule concentrations (i.e., 0.3, 1, and 2 wt%) on the corrosion protection properties of the coating system. Anti-corrosion properties of different coatings were compared by means of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET). MBT loaded PANI capsules in epoxy ester...

Abstract
Removing of arsenic and antimony from electrolyte of copper electrorefining plant by cooling treatment is the subject of current study. In this regards, the temperature of various electrolyte samples reduce to 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C and hold at different times without any turbulency. Experimental results reveal that decreasing the temperature of the electrolyte, facilitate the deposition of As and Sb in the form of AsO5Sb, AsO4Sb and As2O3 as the white precipitate at a critical time. Also, in the case of the electrolyte retention times exceed than the critical time, the copper content of electrolyte precipitate as blue phase. Typically, it is possible to remove 27 wt.% of Sb and 6 wt.% of As by...

Abstract
In the present investigation, mold filling process of resin injection/compression molding (RI/CM) is compared with resin transfer molding (RTM) for simple mold geometry. To do this, analytical solutions are obtained for RI/CM in unidirectional flow. Based on the analytical solutions, flow front progression and pressure distribution are compared with RTM at different fiber content. The results indicate that the RI/CM reduces the mold filling time significantly, particularly for composite parts with higher fiber content

Abstract
Sedimentation of particles can undermine the uniformity of the product in the manufacture of the particle-filled composites. An adequate mathematical description of the sedimentation process could be helpful for providing necessary information concerning the dominant parameters and can give an insight for the process designer to prevent such an undesirable phenomenon in composite production. The present article deals with the mathematical modeling of settling particles during curing of polymer matrix composites. The sedimentation process is described by the mass conservation law for particles. Since the viscosity of the suspending polymer increases as a result of curing process, a new model...
