    Abstract
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a rapid-developing desalination technology; however, it suffers from inefficient energy consumption. To reduce energy consumption, in this study, reverse osmosis thin-film composite membrane (TFC) module was prepared and composed of m-phenylenediamine (MPD), graphene oxide, and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride (TMC) by interfacial polymerization on the surface of a polysulfone substrate. The graphene oxide was embedded in the mentioned thin-film composite by adding it to MPD aqueous solution to enhance permeation flux and, thus, reduce energy consumption. This study assessed the performance of the membrane using a lab-scale RO setup and evaluated permeability and...

Free vibration analysis of functionally graded coupled circular plate with piezoelectric layers

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 23, Issue 8 , 2009 , Pages 2008-2021 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Mehrabadi, S. J ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Najafizadeh, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Based on classical plate theory (CLPT), free vibration analysis of a circular plate composed of functionally graded material (FGM) with its upper and lower surfaces bounded by two piezoelectric layers was performed. Assuming that the material properties vary in a power law manner within the thickness of the plate the governing differential equations are derived. The distribution of electric potential along the thickness direction in piezoelectric layers is considered to vary quadratically such that the Maxwell static electricity equation is satisfied. Then these equations are solved analytically for two different boundary conditions, namely clamped and simply supported edges. The validity of...

    Abstract
Since plasma is rich in many biomarkers used in clinical diagnostic experiments, microscale blood plasma separation is a primitive step in most of microfluidic analytical chips. In this paper, a passive microfluidic device for on-chip blood plasma separation based on Zweifach–Fung effect and plasma skimming was designed and fabricated by hot embossing of microchannels on a PMMA substrate and thermal bonding process. Human blood was diluted in various times and injected into the device. The main novelty of the proposed microfluidic device is the design of diffuser-shaped daughter channels. Our results demonstrated that this design exerted a considerable positive influence on the separation...

Investigation and Modeling of Polymer Electrolyte Membranes in PEM Fuel Cells

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoli Mehrabadi, Bahareh Alsadat (Author) ; Roshandel, Ramin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fuel cells convert the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen directly into the electricity. Their high efficiency and low emissions have made them a prime candidate for powering the next generation electric vehicles. Polymer electrolyte membrane is a key component of the PEM fuel cells. One of the critical problems to overcome in some PEM fuel cells is the water management because If there is not enough water, the membrane becomes dehydrated which leads to a rapid increase in ohmic resistance. On the other hand, if too much water is present, flooding may occur resulting in the pores of the gas diffusion filled by water and the available passage for reactant gases is decreased. In this work...

    , Article ZAMM Zeitschrift fur Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik ; Volume 90, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 287-308 ; 00442267 (ISSN) Jafari Mehrabadi, S ; Kargarnovin, M. H ; Najafizadeh, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, the vibration of a constant thickness circular plate made of functionally graded material (FGM) is controlled by implementing two piezoelectric layers as a sensor and an actuator. Assuming that the material properties of FGM plate vary only in the thickness direction according to the power law manner, the governing differential equations are derived based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate theory (RMPT). Moreover, in a parallel work another set of differential equations are also derived using classical plate theory (CPT). Then for two different kinds of plate boundary conditions these coupled differential equations are solved using separation of variable technique and obtained...

Effects of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed polylactic acid: Study of competition between crystallization and interlayer bonding

    , Article Materials Today Communications ; Volume 39 , 2024 ; 23524928 (ISSN) Ghasemkhani, A ; Pircheraghi, G ; Rashidi Mehrabadi, N ; Eshraghi, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a popular additive manufacturing technique because of its flexibility, customization, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness. However, due to the layer-by-layer fabrication process and the formation of voids, the mechanical properties of printed parts are lower than other manufacturing techniques. As a solution, heat treatments can effectively mitigate additive manufacturing limitations and improve the mechanical properties of printed parts. The interlayer bonding and subsequently mechanical properties of 3D-printed PLA were affected by the competition between crystallization and chain diffusion of 3D-printed polylactic acid during the heat treatment...

Learning of Alternative Splicing from RNA-seq Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rashidi Mehrabadi, Farid (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor) ; Motahari, Abolfazl (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
We construct and analyse a computational model that predicts the outcome of alternative splicing by recognizing features in RNA sequences. The computational model can be viewed as a “splicing simulator” for a range of healthy human tissues. It takes as input a pre-mRNA sequence surrounding a possibly alternatively spliced exon and estimates the inclusion level of that exon in mature RNA, after splicing occurs. The model is trained using a supervised machine learning framework where the training examples are the alternatively spliced exons, the feature vectors are derived RNA sequences near these exons, and the targets are their corresponding splicing outcomes in healthy individuals. The...

    Abstract
The use of magnetic compounds for drug delivery and magnetic imaging has been studied in many studies. The easy use of magnetic particles makes them widespread. By applying a magnetic field, the particles reach the desired position and return to the original state by cutting off the field. The use of these magnetic materials in the nanoscale also adds other benefits, including: convenient and rapid transfer of nanoparticles, rapid repulsion of the kidneys, reducing the risk of overdose, etc. In recent years, the use of quantum dots for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors has attracted much attention. The use of hybrid quantum dots and magnetic nanoparticles can incorporate the desired...

    Abstract
Demand response (DR) is known as a key solution in modern power systems and electricity markets for mitigating wind power uncertainties. However, effective incorporation of DR into power system operation scheduling needs knowledge of the price–elastic demand curve that relies on several factors such as estimation of a customer’s elasticity as well as their participation level in DR programs. To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a novel autonomous DR scheme without prediction of the price–elastic demand curve so that the DR providers apply their selected load profiles ranked in the high priority to the independent system operator (ISO). The energy and reserve markets clearing...

Network delay analysis of a (σ, ρ) - Regular traffic stream over multiple paths in a network of fair-queuing servers

    , Article 2013 Iran Workshop on Communication and Information Theory ; May , 2013 , Page(s): 1 - 6 ; 9781467350235 (ISBN) Ashar, J. K ; Golestani, S. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the worst-case delay performance of a network of fair queuing servers in case of multiple-paths between source-destination pairs. In order to develop worst-case delay analysis for the multiple-path scenario, two challenging events should be addressed: merging different sub-streams of a session as well as distributing a traffic stream among different paths (traffic partitioning). Specifically, we propose to merge incoming sub-streams of a session to a node according to a limited rate Fair Queuing (FQ) scheme. Although the merged stream is treated as a unity, this approach results in a guaranteed level of service to each sub-stream. In addition, an algorithm is...

    Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive study on the Full-Rate and Linear-Receiver (FRLR) STBC proposed as a newly coding scheme with the low decoding complexity for a 2×2 MIMO system. It is shown that the FRLR code suffers from the lack of the non-vanishing determinant (NVD) property that is a key parameter in designing a full-rate STBC with a good performance in higher data rates, across QAM constellation. To overcome this drawback, we show that the existence of the NVD feature for the FRLR code depends on the type of the modulation. In particular, it is analytically proved that the FRLR code fulfills the NVD property across the PAM constellation but not for the QAM scheme. Simulation results...

    Abstract
With the decline in oil discoveries over recent decades, it is believed that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies will play a key role to meet energy demand in the coming years. Polymer flooding is used commonly worldwide as an EOR process. In this work, we propose the synthesis of protected polyacrylamide (PAM) nanoparticles (PPNs) with a hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt) shell by one-pot two-step inverse emulsion polymerization, in which the PSt shell was created by surface polymerization. The shell protects the active PAM chains from premature degradation caused by the harsh environment in the reservoirs, controls the release of the chains as rheological modifiers, and additionally, it...
