    Abstract
We propose the usage of persistent homologies to characterize multipartite entanglement. On a multi-qubit data set we introduce metric-like measures defined in terms of bipartite entanglement and then we derive barcodes. We show that, depending on the distance, they are able to produce different classifications. In one case, it is possible to obtain the standard separability classes. In the other case, a new classification of entangled states of three and four qubits is provided. © CopyrightEPLA, 2018

    Abstract
We introduce a homology-based technique for the classification of multiqubit state vectors with genuine entanglement. In our approach, we associate state vectors to data sets by introducing a metric-like measure in terms of bipartite entanglement, and investigate the persistence of homologies at different scales. This leads to a novel classification of multiqubit entanglement. The relative occurrence frequency of various classes of entangled states is also shown. © Rinton Press

    Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) simulators are versatile tools for scanning protocol evaluation, optimization of geometrical design parameters, assessment of image reconstruction algorithms, and evaluation of the impact of future innovations attempting to improve the performance of CT scanners. Computational human phantoms (CHPs) play a key role in simulators for the radiation dosimetry and assessment of image quality tasks in the medical x-ray systems. Since the construction of patient-specific CHPs can be both difficult and time-consuming, nominal standard/reference CHPs have been established, yielding significant discrepancies in the special design and optimization demands of patient dose and...

    Abstract
Computed Tomography (CT) is one of the most widely used screening and diagnostic tools in medical imaging centers. Considering IAEA HUMAN HEALTH SERIES No. 19 and the American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation Program, quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) are mandatory programs to periodically monitor the system condition to promote the effective utilization of ionization radiation for a diagnostic outcome through obtaining and retaining appropriate image quality and reduction of patient dose. Computational phantoms (CPs) are the key tool to monitor system condition. The commercial QC phantoms are expensive products and are not flexible enough for user demands. In this...

An experimental investigation and optimization of screen mesh heat pipes for low-mid temperature applications

    Abstract
The perspectives of utilization of a screen mesh heat pipe (HP) for low to medium operating temperature applications are studied in this study. A two-dimensional mathematical model for heat and mass transfer of HPs is presented to define its performances under steady state operations. The model couples heat conduction in the wall with both liquid flow in the wick and vapor flow in the core. Experimental analysis is developed to evaluate the influence of operating parameters (the orientation and the cooling temperature) as well as the evaporator section length on the performance of the HP. Furthermore, a modeling approach to optimize the HP performance from a thermal point of view is...

    Abstract
This study, for the first time, reports the synthesis of CuO- and Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) using the Salvia hispanica extract by a high-gravity technique. The original green synthesis procedure led to the formation of nanoparticles with promising catalytic and biological properties. The synthesized nanoparticles were fully characterized and their catalytic activity was evaluated through a typical Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition (AAC) reaction. The potential antibacterial activity against gram positive (S. aureus) and gram negative (E. coli) bacteria were investigated. It was shown that the antibacterial properties were independent of the NP morphology as well as of the texture of the synthesis...

    Abstract
In this paper, we study the resource allocation and scheduling problem for a downlink non- orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network where the base station (BS) allocates the spectrum resources and power to the set of users. We aim to optimize the sub-channel assignment and power allocation to achieve a balance between the number of scheduled users and total sum-rate maximization. To solve the above problem, we propose a many-to-many two-sided user-subchannel matching algorithm in which the set of users and sub-channels are considered as two sets of players pursuing their own interests. The algorithm converges to a pair-wise stable matching after a limited number of iterations. Simulation...

    Abstract
In this paper, the resource allocation and scheduling problem for a full-duplex (FD) orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access network is studied where an FD base station simultaneously communicates with multiple pairs of uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) half-duplex (HD) users bidirectionally. In this paper, we aim to maximize the network sum-rate through joint UL and DL user pairing, OFDM subchannel assignment, and power allocation. We formulate the problem as a non-convex optimization problem. The optimal algorithm requires an exhaustive search, which will become prohibitively complicated as the numbers of users and subchannels increase. To tackle this complex problem more efficiently, we...

Continuous and discrete radius functions on voronoi tessellations and delaunay mosaics

    Abstract
The Voronoi tessellation in Rd is defined by locally minimizing the power distance to given weighted points. Symmetrically, the Delaunay mosaic can be defined by locally maximizing the negative power distance to other such points. We prove that the average of the two piecewise quadratic functions is piecewise linear, and that all three functions have the same critical points and values. Discretizing the two piecewise quadratic functions, we get the alpha shapes as sublevel sets of the discrete function on the Delaunay mosaic, and analogous shapes as superlevel sets of the discrete function on the Voronoi tessellation. For the same non-critical value, the corresponding shapes are disjoint,...

    Abstract
Cell separation is a key step in many biomedical research areas including biotechnology, cancer research, regenerative medicine, and drug discovery. While conventional cell sorting approaches have led to high-efficiency sorting by exploiting the cell's specific properties, microfluidics has shown great promise in cell separation by exploiting different physical principles and using different properties of the cells. In particular, label-free cell separation techniques are highly recommended to minimize cell damage and avoid costly and labor-intensive steps of labeling molecular signatures of cells. In general, microfluidic-based cell sorting approaches can separate cells using “intrinsic”...

    Abstract
One of the methods for providing private parking is to use the mechanized parking within neighborhoods or housing units that are common in today's world. But, unfortunately, due to lack of appropriate rules and technical, administrative and legal guidelines, this approach has not yet been used. Hence the necessity of investigating and formulating laws, programs and specific criteria for mechanized private parking in terms of legal, technical, traffic, urbanization aspects (location, neighborhood, architecture, building standards and national regulations, economic aspects, etc.) have been a motivation for conducting this study. In this research, after studying and investigating previous...

Design of a hybrid controller for pressure swing adsorption processes

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology ; 2018 ; 10636536 (ISSN) Fakhroleslam, M ; Bozorgmehri Boozarjomehry, R ; Fatemi, S ; De Santis, E ; Di Benedetto, M. D ; Pola, G ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2018
    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to synthesize a hybrid controller for pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes. Since the process is described by a set of partial differential algebraic equations, first a local reduced-order model (LROM) for the process is developed and is formalized as a hybrid system. A hybrid controller is designed for purity control of the process in the presence of external disturbances by determining the maximal safe set of the LROM. A hybrid backward reachability analysis is performed for this purpose. Considering a realistic scenario for PSA processes where the states are not available and the number of measurement sensors is very limited, the desired states are estimated...

    Abstract
In this paper we propose a method towards purity control of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes which is based on the use of hybrid systems formalism. Hybrid systems feature both continuous and discrete-event dynamics and hence are very suited to describe in detail PSA processes. Based on mechanistic model of the processes, a local reduced-order model (LROM) is developed for PSA processes. Then the processes are represented as hybrid systems whose continuous evolution is described by the LROM. We then perform an analysis of hybrid reachability properties of the hybrid system obtained, based on which the so-called maximal safe set is computed. The analysis is performed for a two-bed,...

    Abstract
This work develops a systematic uncertainty quantification framework to assess the reliability of prediction delivered by physics-based material models in the presence of incomplete measurement data and modeling error. The framework consists of global sensitivity analysis, Bayesian inference, and forward propagation of uncertainty through the computational model. The implementation of this framework on a new multiphase model of novel porous silica aerogel materials is demonstrated to predict the thermomechanical performances of a building envelope insulation component. The uncertainty analyses rely on sampling methods, including Markov-chain Monte Carlo and a mixed finite element solution of...

    Abstract
A novel intelligent semi-active control system for an eleven degrees of freedom passenger car's suspension system using magnetorheological (MR) damper with neuro-fuzzy (NF) control strategy to enhance desired suspension performance is proposed. In comparison with earlier studies, an improvement in problem modeling is made. The proposed method consists of two parts: a fuzzy control strategy to establish an efficient controller to improve ride comfort and road handling (RCH) and an inverse mapping model to estimate the force needed for a semi-active damper. The fuzzy logic rules are extracted based on Sugeno inference engine. The inverse mapping model is based on an artificial neural network...

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

    , Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

    Abstract
Gaining insight into possible vibratory responses of dynamical systems around their stable equilibria is an essential step, which must be taken before their design and application. The results of such a study can significantly help prevent instability in closed-loop stabilized systems by avoiding the excitation of the system in the neighborhood of its resonance. This paper investigates nonlinear oscillations of a rotary inverted pendulum (RIP) with a full-state feedback controller. Lagrange’s equations are employed to derive an accurate 2-DoF mathematical model, whose parameter values are extracted by both the measurement and 3D modeling of the real system components. Although the governing...
