Investigating the Effect of Operating Parameters on the Hold-Up and Slip Velocity in an L-Shaped Pulsed Sieve-Plate Extraction Column for Uranium Extraction using the Emulsion Liquid Membrane

- In this research, for the first time, the emulsion liquid membrane method was used in a pulsed sieve plate column to separate uranium from uranyl nitrate solution. The L-shaped pulse extraction column was implemented on a semi-industrial scale at the Atomic Energy Organization. For the design and scale-up of these columns, it is necessary to measure hydrodynamic parameters and investigate the effects of operating parameters on them. The hydrodynamic parameters measured in this study include dispersed phase holdup and slip velocity under two conditions: without mass transfer and with mass transfer. Despite efforts, the operating conditions in the L-shaped column did not allow for the measurement of hydrodynamic parameters. Due to the improper structure connecting the two columns and high density of dispersed phase and the lack of material flow at this point, the horizontal section was removed and further research was conducted with a vertical sieve plate column. In both cases, the dispersed phase holdup was measured by the shut down method at various pulse velocities, dispersed phase flow rates, and continuous phase flow rates. According to observations, in both conditions, with and without mass transfer, the dispersed phase holdup increased with the increase of each operating parameter; however, the effect of increasing the pulse velocity on the dispersed phase holdup was greater than that of the other two parameters, and the effect of the continuous phase flow rate was less than the others. For both cases, based on the Buckingham theorem and dimensionless analysis of the influential parameters in the phenomenon, theoretical-experimental correlations for dispersed phase holdup and slip velocity were presented
