  7. Abstract:
  8. Exploring how economic rationality principles are compromised in choices involving three or more options is essential for understanding the cognitive and neural processes behind decision-making. Studies have found that as the value of a third (distractor) option increases, the relative accuracy of selecting between two primary options declines. This decline is believed to result from divisive normalization within neural value processing. However, recent research has challenged this finding, suggesting that the presence of a distractor may not impact choice accuracy. In our experiments, we modified and manipulated the choice task to evaluate attention more specifically. Contrary to expectations, our results replicated the distractor effect, indicating that the distractor does impact choice accuracy. We observed a dynamic influence of distractor value on fixations, where higher distractor values led to increased attention toward the distractors and decreased accuracy. Moreover, our study uniquely investigated the spatial effects on attention and decision-making. We discovered that the probability of fixating on and choosing the highest value option in a choice task increases as the option becomes farther from the distractor. Additionally, over time, attention to other options grows, while the probability of fixating on and choosing the highest value option decreases. These findings suggest that spatial dynamics and temporal factors play a significant role in attention and decision-making processes
