  7. Abstract:
  8. This study investigates the ultimate axial compressive behavior of cylindrical steel silos with flat plates, reinforced by vertical and circumferential stiffeners. The main objective is to analyze the role and effect of these stiffeners on improving the overall stability and enhancing the load-carrying capacity of this type of shell against buckling. To achieve this, theoretical foundations related to local and global buckling mechanisms in cylindrical shells were first reviewed, along with the relevant design code provisions. Then, numerical models were developed and analyzed using the ABAQUS finite element software. In the first stage, models without stiffeners and models with only vertical stiffeners were developed to validate the modeling approach based on existing theoretical and numerical studies. The effects of the number, spacing, and height of vertical stiffeners on the shell behavior were investigated. In the next stage, circumferential stiffeners were added and their effects, in combination with the vertical stiffeners, on the load–displacement behavior, buckling mode shapes, and ultimate load were examined. Furthermore, two approaches for introducing geometric imperfections were considered: the first-mode shape from linear buckling analysis, and the deformed shape at the ultimate load. The results showed that using both vertical and circumferential stiffeners significantly increases the buckling resistance and improves the post-buckling behavior of the shell. Increasing the number of vertical stiffeners enhances load transfer to the lower shell regions and delays local stress concentrations. Adding circumferential stiffeners improves the overall performance, reduces stress concentration, and prevents the expansion of local buckling, leading to a more stable post-buckling response. Finally, the findings highlight the need to provide more accurate and up-to-date design recommendations for steel cylindrical tanks under axial compression, as the use of stiffeners plays a crucial role in improving both the strength and safety of these structures
