  4. Abstract:
  5. A comprehensive off-design study was performed on a bubble column humidification-dehumidification (HDH) brine treatment system to bridge the performance knowledge gap between the on-design numerical studies and experimental investigations. By conducting experimental tests, a numerical model was developed based on the collected data. The research findings showed that optimizing the performance with respect to the mass flow rate ratio (MFRR) can improve performance when a parameter deviates from the on-design condition. The effectiveness of this optimization relies on the dependency of the dehumidifier's heat capacity rate ratio (HCRDeH) on the deviated parameter. However, incorporating losses decreases both performance and its gradient, diminishing the effectiveness of MFRR optimization in enhancing performance by up to 79 %. Further, a correlation matrix was provided to gain an overview of the importance of each parameter on the off-design performance. In terms of economic analysis, for concentrating a stream of 60 g/kg salinity to 260 g/kg salinity, the levelized cost of water (LCOW) falls within the range of 3–56 $/m3, depending on the electricity and steam price tariffs. Nevertheless, incorporating losses leads to a potential increase in LCOW of up to 56 %. © 2024
