  7. Abstract:
  8. In this study a new metallic damper, namely Corrugated steel plate Honeycomb Damper (CHD) is presented. The CHD proposed ease of manufacturing and implementation in various structures with a stable energy dissipation characteristic when subjected to lateral loading. The basic configuration of the CHD consists of two steel plates that are bent to form trapezoidal corrugations. The plates are then welded together along the bent lines to build the honeycomb geometry. In order to investigate the behavior of the CHD, first a closed-form expression for the elastic stiffness and yield strength was obtained by the matrix analysis method. Then, to study the non-linear behavior of the CHD, three experimental specimens were built and cyclic quasi-static tests were performed on them. Force-displacement and cumulative dissipated energy curves were extracted and relevant elaborations were presented. Moreover, taking into account the principles of dynamics of structures, the effective stiffness and the equivalent damping of the CHDs during the cyclic loading were calculated. Hysteresis curves of the CHD specimens were stable and symmetric. Behavior of the dampers were greatly enhanced when the width of the specimen decreased to its minimum value. Ductility of specimen with minimum width was 41.67 percent which is more than of most previous metallic dampers. This specimen also dissipated 28.8 kJ of energy through 1072 mm cumulative displacement. Equivalent viscous damping of specimens was in the range of 30 to 35 percent. In the next step, a verified numerical model in the ABAQUS software was developed. The model considers the materially and geometrically non-linearity. Ductile damage of the steel material is also included in the model. Accordingly, 50 CHDs with different geometric characteristics were analyzed. To enhance the energy absorbing capacity and the load bearing capacity of the proposed damper, the depth and the thickness of the CHD can be increased. With respect to the observations, CHD is suitable candidate for controlling new or existing engineering structures against earthquakes
