- Generators are one of the most important components of power systems. Still, 99 percent of these generators in many countries power network are of synchronous generator type. The excitation system of a synchronous generator is an indensible and inseparable part of it. In addition, the excitation system maintains the terminal voltage within the permissible voltage range by quickly responding to the load changes. In large generators, the excitation system energy is often supplied separately from an auxiliary source or from a DC generator. Any interruption in the excitation circuit of a synchronous generator, not only can cause serious damage to the whole generator, can cause voltage drop in the network and even lead to blackouts. Therefore, quick detection of "excitation circuit interruption" and subsequent quick disconnection of the generator from the network is essential. In this thesis, the performance of conventional "excitation circuit interruption" protection methods (used in the industry and published papers) are first investigated in this thesis. The conventional "excitation circuit interruption" protection methods, in addition to being slow, may maloperate in discriminating between different sources of power system faults, including "stable" and "unstable" power oscillation phenomena due to an "excitation circuit interruption". For this reason, a new method is presented in this thesis using the rotor speed and its first derivative. This method has a higher speed and a higher accuracy in protection of the field interruption if compared with the conventional methods. Since the aim of this thesis is to present and implement a practical algorithm using a speed sensor in parallel with conventional protection algorithms for excitation circuit interruption of synchronous generators. The proposed method is implemented on an industrial relay to verify its performance, while its safety is also guaranteed
