  7. Abstract:
  8. Atherosclerosis is a vascular disorder caused by inflammation of the arterial wall. This inflammation leads to the accumulations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, monocytes, macrophages and fat-laden foam cells at the site of inflammation, often referred to as plaque formation. This work uses a mathematical model for simulating the deposition of atheroma plaque in coronary arteries. In this study, the effect of time average wall shear stress (TAWSS), oscillatory shear index (OSI), non-Newtonian characteristics of blood and variable hematocrit values on the occurrence of atherosclerosis in a three-dimensional coronary artery was numerically investigated. Simulations was conducted in a 3-D coronary artery bifurcation using Fluent software. This model utilizes momentum equation to simulate transient blood flow along the lumen. Additionally, Darcy's law and Kedem-Katchalsky equations are employed to analyze plasma and species transport across the endothelium using the three-pore model. The mass balances of all substances in the model are implemented through convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The findings suggest the maximum Foam cells concentrations in the myocardial wall of the Left Anterior Descending (LAD) artery and outer wall of the Left Circumflex (LCX) artery; thereby indicating these two regions as particularly vulnerable to the early plaques development, which is consistent with the previous clinical research. Also, it is important to consider the non-Newtonian characteristics of blood flow in the bifurcations, as it has a direct influence on the time average wall shear stress (TAWSS) and the oscillatory shear index (OSI)
