- Abstract:
- While the action in society is at stake, it seems that, I merely do something in my personal sphere, but its consequences will not remain ultimately in my personal sphere. It goes beyond of my personal realm and obviously affects other persons and their choices. This claim is one of the most central claims of Rousseau’s philosophy of right. But if it is so, or in some more technical sense, it is the case that there is some mutual dependence between individuals in social life, then my sphere of freedom would not be merely mine. Consequently, a new question would be of some central importance: What is permissible for me, meanwhile I am living in state of society? Rousseau concludes in response to this question that, our forms of social life should be organized on some mutual and collective agreements, that constitutes the permissibility of my actions. It is the only legitimate way of social life.Hence we need to use some (mutually agreed) norms, which can form the structure of our free life. Granted, people are subject to such norms or laws, but these norms or laws are ultimately results of their own (collective) decisions, and they are not totally external to their will. So according to rousseauian stage setting of the issue, we need to form a mutual or collective framework at first, in order to form a good society or to live in a free society eventually. Rousseau refers to a constellation of concepts to introduce this collective framework. One of his famous concepts is state of nature, which is a state in opposition to the state of society. A concept that has some explanatory role in his social theory. So I have introduced, in this essay, the specific explanation of Rousseau on forming a state of society, his conception of state of nature, his beliefs about good or legitimate forms of social life and finally the content of good society in his view
