- The reconnaissance reports of past earthquakes indicate that the damages induced by the destruction of secondary systems under earthquakes have a significant share of the total estimated destruction. In many cases, destruction of these non-structural components leads to complete stop of normal operation of sensitive centers such as hospitals and reduces the performance of these centers after the earthquake. Therefore, noticing the important parameters in the design load of these components is of great importance and must be taken into account. In this study, the effect of increasing the mass of secondary systems on the accelerations and displacements response and the effect of considering the non-linear response of the main structure on the response of these components are investigated.Firstly, a secondary system with one degree of freedom was placed on the roof of the structure and the response spectrum of the acceleration and displacement of the non-structural component was constructed by considering different relative masses for the system. The time history analyses were performed by considering the effect of the interaction between the structure and the secondary system, once by considering the linear behavior of the main structure and then by considering its non-linear behavior. The effect of the secondary system's mass on the difference of the secondary system's responses for the linear and non-linear behavior of the main structure is one of the topics discussed in this research. By defining two parameters: Rma and Rmd the effect of non-linear analyses on the secondary system's mass and its period is investigated.In the seismic design of secondary systems or non-structural components simple relationships had been used for many years in which, the effect of many parameters were not taken into account. The 2800 code had improved the relationship for the non-structural components. At the end of this study, by considering a numerical example, a secondary system of telecommunication type is placed on top of the roof of the structure and the design load and acceleration suggested in some of the well known international codes as well as the fourth version of 2800 code of Iran were examined and compared and some suggestions were made in order to revise these relationships
