- Abstract:
- Due to recent prevalence of error resilient applications (e.g., multimedia, artificial intelligence, etc.), approximate computing (AC) has become a promising paradigm for low power and high performance designs. A significant amount of research in AC has been focused on improving the power and performance by approximating arithmetic units. However, memories i) are also a major contributor to the overall energy consumption (e.g., 30% to 60%) and response time of a system, and ii) result in perceivable quality degradation when used approximately. In this thesis, we employ the predictability potential of embedded systems in order to enable quality-aware exploitation of the advantages of the approximate memories through the memory hierarchies of embedded systems. To this end, three application level methods have been proposed: i) the first method adopts profiling and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling to use temporal predictability of embedded systems for reducing time-dependent quality degradation, ii) the second method uses code analysis and memory instruction profiling and employs the program predictability of embedded applications in order to increase the quality, and iii) the third method strives to reduce the quality fluctuations rooted in possible mispredictions through embedded systems that include approximate memory hierarchies (e.g., consisting of a main memory and a scratchpad memory). Furthermore, SimpleXcalar , an open source full CPU system simulation framework, which includes approximate memory models, is developed on the basis of SimpleScalar simulator for evaluating the proposed methods. The experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in term of quality enhancement, while benefiting from energy, performance and lifetime of approximate memories
