  8. One of the encouraging technologies for resolving the lack of clean water in the world is forward osmosis process (FO). Reaching to a optimized development of FO membranes is essential to make fo process commercially viable.
    This study’s aim is to develop a thin film composites (TFC) membrane with high FO performance (good water flux and high salt rejection) in order to seawater desalination.
    Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), a hydrophilic polymer, is a less considered polymer in fabricating support layer for TFC FO membranes .TFC membranes consist of a selective polyamide active layer formed by interfacial polymerization on top of a support layer fabricated by non-solvent induced phase inversion. The changes that have been made in support layer structure by varying casting solution polymer concentration, the solvent quality and coagulation bath temperature (all in phase inversion step )was investigated. A desirable selective layer with high salt rejection would be created with using interfacial polymerization and appropriate thermal treatment.
    After choosing a better structure, the obtained TFC by experiments with a deionized water feed and a 1 molar NaCl draw solution could reach water flux 20.1 lit./m2.hr in FO mode while, the salt rejection of this membrane was 97% in reverse osmosis test. Moreover, this membrane could obtain 15.5 lit./m2.hr water fluxes in FO mode with 3.5 wt. % NaCl aqueous solutions as feed and 2 molar NaCl draw solution
