Understanding an Object-oriented Framework’s Evolution via Analyzing the Evolution of its Concepts Across Different Versions of that Framework

  8. Programmers often use object-oriented application frameworks, such as Eclipse, due to their several advantages, some of which are: providing a standard platform for designing and implementing software systems, enabling the reuse of both code and design,reducing the development’s time and costs, and increasing the maintainability of systems.However, frameworks evolve over time because of new requirements or fixing bugs. Therefore, the programs that had been written on top of those frameworks also need to evolve to become compatible with them; otherwise, they may crash.This thesis presents an approach that comprehends the evolution of frameworks through comprehending the evolution of the concepts provided by that framework. Framework-provided concepts are general units of functionality that can be instantiated in the application code. For instance, Eclipse provides concepts like context menu or viewer. The main contribution of this thesis is an automated approach that extracts framework evolution rules with high precision and recall. Then, these rules can be used by programmers to update their programs. To evaluate this work, we implemented the proposed approach and used it to extract framework evolution rules for nineteen concepts on top of five frameworks. Furthermore, we compared the results of our approach with previous work. The results of these evaluations show that our approach can extract the framework evolution rules with high precision and recall
