- Ramp merges are among high potential congested sections of freeways. On-ramp driver behaviors are often complicated. Traffic models for freeway merges are often based on gap acceptance theory and lane changing models. Gap acceptance theory states that drivers merging from on-ramp to freeway, seek acceptable gaps to merge into freeway. Both lead and lag gaps should be acceptable for a driver to merge to freeway.
In this research, drivers’ behavior in two on-ramps of Tehran city was studied. After field data collection using camera, data were extracted from films. First, distribution of time headways in freeway right lane and gaps between merging vehicle with lead and lag vehicles were studied. Also, critical lead and lag gaps were determined. Results show that log normal distribution is the best model for freeway headways and lead gaps and shifted exponential distribution is the best model for lag gaps. Critical lag gap was found to be greater than critical lead gap. Gap acceptance modeling was based on two microscopic and macroscopic approaches. For microscopic modeling, effective factors on lag gap were lane 2 volume, speed of lead vehicle, and gap between lead and lag vehicle. Effective factor on lead gap was gap between lead and lag vehicle. For macroscopic modeling, effective factors on lag gap were lane 1, 2 volumes, speeds of lead and lag vehicles, and gap between lead and lag vehicle.
