Shear and Moment Interaction in Reduced Web Beam Section Connections

  8. Northridge earthquake in 1994 which damaged over 200 connections in moment resisting frames showed improper performance of regular connections. After this earthquake, diverse investigations have been started to clarify reasons of these failures and surveying new methods for their rehabilitation. Behavior of beam to column connections can be improved by shifting the location of inelasticity away from column’s face. Such connections can be achieved by reducing flange area of beams at a specific distance from column’s face, and they have been approved by various design codes. Another kind of these connections can be achieved by perforating beam’s web. Research on latter case shows that, if properly designed, they can satisfy the “strong column-weak beam” and “strong connection-weak component” criteria. Shear and moment interaction is of high importance for designing of these connections. A parametric study has been done on the effect of perforation size, perforation location, and span length of these connections. In addition, performance of these connections under cyclic loads has been surveyed. Moreover, an interaction formula for moment and shear is derived for design purposes. Furthermore, a step by step method for designing of these connections is prescribed. Also, accuracy of proposed design method has been checked by surveying the performance of a steel moment frame which was designed according to this method under cyclic load
