- Abstract:
- The fast development of semiconductor industry has moved the design methodology to SoC (System on Chip) design. This growing trend has made it possible to perform parallel processing on a chip. Due to the increasing number of processing elements In SoCs, buses become the bottleneck of the system and lead to non-efficient designs. In the early years of the current decade, Network on Chip (NoC) was introduced and considered by the researchers. NoC is an efficient solution that eliminates bus bottleneck and it had been introduced as a suitable substructure for interconnecting processing elements. The NoCs were originally built based on Interconnection Networks. Although initially aimed at improving the efficiency, but today power consumption is considered as one of the important issues. Many factors such as network traffic, packet length, routing algorithm, switching method, number of virtual channels are involved in the amount of consuming power of a NoC. One of the most important factors for determining the power consumption and performance of NoCs is the number of virtual channels or more accurately the buffer size allocated to each virtual channel. On the other hand, management of these buffers affect network performance and power. One of the buffer management methods is using of suitable switching method.
For the best achievement in terms of performance and power consumption it is better to manage and allocate buffers to virtual channels dynamically and adaptively with considration of network conditions (power and delay). Therefore, this project seeks to provide a method for dynamic buffer management. With simulation the proposed method for adaptive buffer management in a two-dimensional mesh network is evaluated according to the study of power and speed. In this thesis we used Xmulator for simulating the network’s behavior and Orion power model is used for power analysis and estimation - Keywords:
