- Abstract:
- The concept of equivalent linearization in which the actual nonlinear system is substituted by an equivalent linear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system is extended to soil-structure systems with elastic and inelastic behaviors. Equivalent linearization is one of the approximate methods widely used to estimate the response of nonlinear structures in seismic performance based design procedures as a basis of Capacity Spectrum method. Period and damping of equivalent linear model should be evaluated in a way to predict the maximum inelastic displacement demand of the structure with sufficient accuracy. In recent years, comprehensive statistical studies have been performed to improve the accuracy of the predictions made by equivalent linear models. However, in most of these studies, the base of the structure is assumed to be fixed. That is while the soil-structure interaction (SSI) may have considerable effects on the response of structure in both elastic and inelastic ranges. Generally, the flexibility of soil beneath the structure decreases the stiffness of the soil-structure system with respect to the same structure fixed at the base. Also, the radiation of vibrating waves in soil media usually increases the damping of the whole system. In addition, the rigidity of the base of the structure with respect to the surrounding soil causes the rigid foundation to experience the motion different from the free field motion through kinematic interaction. In current seismic provisions, the soil-structure system is replaced by an equivalent SDOF model to estimate the response of the actual system. The dynamic characteristics of the substitute model and the input motion are modified in a way to include the mentioned SSI effects. In these provisions, the proposed formulations for fixed-base structures are also implemented to evaluate the equivalent linear parameters of inelastic soil-structure systems. Since the combined problem of equivalent linearization of inelastic soil-structure systems has not been studied in sufficient detail, in this research, a comprehensive parametric study is done to evaluate the equivalent linear parameters of a wide range of inelastic soil-structure systems using equivalent linearization method. This approach is also extended to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of elastic soil-structure systems. Moreover, the reliability and sensitivity of the derived results to predict the maximum response of the actual soil-structure system are considered in detail.
