    Abstract
    Beta cells are responsible for secreting insulin to maintain normoglycaemia throughout the individual’s life. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by an autoimmune response that promotes the destruction of beta-cells within the pancreatic islets, resulting in lifelong inadequate insulin secretion. Encapsulating beta cells inside a semipermeable membrane to protect encapsulated cells from direct contact with the host immune system, is a new way to treat type 1 diabetes without the need for long-term immunosuppression. .     Abstract
    Precise segmentation of the pancreas in abdominal CT scan images plays a critical role in various diagnostic applications, including the detection, classification, and prediction of pancreatic cancer progression. This dissertation presents an advanced model for the automatic segmentation of pancreatic tissue in 3D CT scan images. The model is built upon the SAM (Segment Anything Model) architecture, a 2D prompt-based transformer model, which has been optimized for 3D imaging.
