Influence of martensite volume fraction on impact properties of triple phase (TP) steels

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 22, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 823-829 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Zare, A ; Ekrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Ferrite-bainite-martensite triple phase (TP) microstructures with different volume fractions of martensite were obtained by changing heat treatment time during austempering at 300 C. Room temperature impact properties of TP steels with different martensite volume fractions (VM) were determined by means of Charpy impact testing. The effects of test temperature on impact properties were also investigated for two selected microstructures containing 0 (the DP steel) and 8.5 vol.% martensite. Test results showed reduction in toughness with increasing VM in TP steels. Fracture toughness values for the DP and TP steels with 8.5 vol.% martensite were obtained from correlation between fracture...

    Abstract
The strain hardening behavior of AISI 4340 steel with dual phase (DP) and triple phase (TP) microstructures with constant ferrite volume fractions of 34% was investigated. The microstructures of specimens were analyzed using an optical microscope. The tensile flow behavior of all the samples was explained using Holloman equation. Results showed that in both DP and TP steels, work hardening takes place in two stages. The onset strain of second stage of work hardening and Holloman equation parameters (work hardening exponent and strength coefficient) in both stages were increased with the increase of martensite volume fraction in TP steels. At first stage of work hardening, ferrite phase...

    Abstract
This paper presents the effect of martensite volume fraction (VM) on mechanical properties of AISI 4340 steel with ferrite-bainite-martensite microstructures. The steel bars were austenitized at 900°C for 1h followed by intercritical annealing at 740°C for 100min and quenching into a salt bath with temperature of 300°C and holding at different times to obtain triple phase (TP) microstructures with 34vol.% fraction ferrite and various martensite (or bainite) contents. Presence of three phases in adjacent to each other was confirmed by metallographic analysis and TEM studies. TEM observation also indicates higher density of dislocations within ferrite near martensite colonies compared to that...

    Abstract
A methodology is developed for the design of optimum viscous fluid passive energy dissipation systems using pole assignment active control algorithm. In this method, the procedure to assign the new structural poles is slightly modified such that the resulting structural properties (i.e., the optimum locations of system poles) can be achieved merely by modification of structural stiffness and addition of a passive control system. A combination of stiffness reduction and increase of damping is utilized to reduce both acceleration and displacement response. It is shown that the control systems designed using this method provide structural performances slightly better than or close to those of...

    Abstract
A practical procedure is developed for the design of passive control systems using viscous fluid dampers for nonlinear structures. The design methodology takes advantage of the modification of the damping, strength, and stiffness properties of the structure to achieve the desired relative displacement and absolute acceleration response. For this purpose, a study of poles in the complex plane is used to determine the required changes in the dynamic properties of nonlinear structures. Furthermore, a relatively simple relation between the ductility demands of highly damped single- and multiple-degree-of-freedom (SDF and MDF respectively) systems is established to reduce the computational burden...

    Abstract
A strategy is developed for design of passive control systems for structures experiencing inelastic deformations during earthquake loading. Besides the addition of passive energy dissipation devices, the proposed method suggests the required changes to the stiffness and strength of the structure, to reduce the absolute acceleration and relative deformation responses simultaneously. For this purpose, the locations and amounts of modifications in stiffness, strength and damping are determined by a sliding mode control algorithm to consider the nonlinear behavior of the structure. Being originally designed for active control, the sliding mode algorithm is modified to facilitate the extraction...

    Abstract
Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbines have several advantages over other wind turbines for local electricity generation in urban environments. However, the main aerodynamic challenge is the negative impacts of the dynamic stall phenomenon on the turbine performance. This study numerically scrutinizes the effects of plasma actuators on the dynamic stall control and performance improvement of a Darrieus turbine. For this sake, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a pressure-based finite volume method. The Suzen-Hoang plasma actuator model is employed to calculate the body forces attributed to the plasma actuator. First, the dynamic stall characteristics of...

    Abstract
Although the popularity of Darrieus-type vertical axis wind turbines is growing for small-scale electricity generation, these turbines have severe challenges in self-starting. This paper proposes a flow control method, namely, the plasma actuator, to solve the self-starting problem besides enhancing the turbine performance. The Darrieus turbine is numerically investigated using a pressure-based finite volume method to solve the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes and the γ-Reθt transitional model equations. Simulation of the blade rotation is performed using the sliding mesh technique accompanied by the turbine equation of motion to enable the blade rotational degree of freedom....

    Abstract
Load shedding is a prevalent emergency control designed to prevent system blackouts. The higher complexity and lower predictability of modern power systems makes it difficult to rely on conventional load shedding schemes which shed loads in pre-defined steps without sufficient consideration of the actual system characteristics and the disturbance situations. In case of large disturbances, the power system stability can be improved by optimal load shedding in more effective load buses. Proposed scheme utilizes improved Power Flow Tracing method to determine the amount and location of load drops considering power system constraints. Numerical simulations conducted on IEEE 39 bus standard test...

    Abstract
Load shedding (LS) is one of the most important protection schemes to prevent system blackout. In the case of largedisturbances, optimal LS in appropriate buses can effectively maintain the system stability. The higher complexity and lowerpredictability of modern power systems with high wind power penetration make it difficult to rely on conventional LS schemes, which shed a fixed, predetermined amount of load regardless of disturbance location. This study presents an intelligent LSscheme based on synchrophasor measurements that are adapted to both disturbance size and power system inertia. Theproposed scheme utilises improved power flow tracing method to determine the amount and location of...

    Abstract
The objective of the present study is to model and analyzing a two-level supply chain with reverse information exchange in which the manufacturer and the retailer are aware of the status of each other's stocks. To take advantages of this method of information exchange, manufacturers and retailers change their stock policies from traditional base-stock policy to a state-dependent two-level base-stock policy. Then, they change their ordering policy according to the other side's stock availability. Applying the mentioned method reduces the total cost of system as well as decreasing the average amount of manufacturer's inventory and improving the waiting time of walk-in customers

    Abstract
Optimal Reactive Power Dispatch (ORPD) has a salient impact on decreasing the power loss of transmission lines and adjusting the voltage deviation. The parameters that are used for the ORPD are tap settings of transformers, voltages of generating plants and the output of compensating device such as capacitor banks and synchronous condensors. In this paper settings of FACTS devices are considered as additional parameters in solving the ORPD problem. Also the genetic algorithm has been used to find the optimal settings of the controlling parameters. The results of the ORPD have been obtained on a 30 bus IEEE network. © 2009 IEEE

    Abstract
The structural dynamics (SD) behavior of Elastic Flapping Wings (EFWs) is investigated analytically as a novel approach in EFWs analysis. In this regard an analytical SD solution of EFW undergoing a prescribed rigid body motion is initially derived, where the governing equations are expressed in modal space. The inertial forces are also analytically computed utilizing the actuator induced acceleration effects on the wing structure, while due to importance of analytical solution the linearity assumption is also considered. The formulated initial-value problem is solved analytically to study the EFW structural responses, where the effect of structure-actuator frequency ratio,...

    Abstract
The effect of inertial forces on the Structural Dynamics (SD) behaviour of Elastic Flapping Wings (EFWs) is investigated. In this regard, an analytical modal-based SD solution of EFW undergoing a prescribed rigid body motion is initially derived. As a case study, a rectangular wing undergoing a prescribed sinusoidal motion is simulated. The analytical solution is derived for the first time and helps towards a conceptual understanding of the overall EFW's SD behaviour and its analysis required in their designs. Specifically, the EFW transient...

Presentation of a novel variable reluctance tubular resolver

    Abstract
Encoders and resolvers are the most common position sensors in controlling electrical machines. However, due to their ability to work under harsh conditions, resolvers are more preferred. In linear position detection, the transversal edge effects and the longitudinal end-effects adversely affect the accuracy of conventional linear resolvers. On the contrary, due to the cylindrical symmetry of tubular machines, they are not subject to the edge effects. With this idea, this article presents a novel linear VR resolver with a tubular structure to achieve higher accuracy than the existing linear resolvers. A magnetic equivalent circuit model is then developed to prove the correct performance of...

    Abstract
The present research develops a practical method for size and topology optimization of nonlinear truss-like structures against earthquake effects by incorporating strong ground motion uncertainties. For optimum design solutions, an adaptive optimization technique is adopted. The cross-sectional area of structural members is modified based on the structure's nonlinear time history response until a uniform distribution of Mean Annual Frequency of Exceedance (MAFE) of member ductility is achieved. Three truss-like structures are optimized against a set of 11 strong ground motions to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method. The effects of target MAFE in member ductility,...
