Explicit dynamics X-FEM simulation of heterogeneous materials
, Article Finite Elements in Analysis and Design ; Volume 56 , 2012 , Pages 52-79 ; 0168874X (ISSN) ; Yaghoobi, M ; Vafai, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2012
Abstract
An explicit dynamics extended finite element method (X-FEM) is applied to the problems with material interfaces. To this end, the available X-FEM element mass matrix lumping techniques have been identified and assessed. It is shown that all the methods have their own limitations and are not general enough to handle the enrichment functions specifically developed for the elements with material interfaces. Hence, a general element mass matrix lumping technique has been introduced which exactly preserves the kinetic energies of the basic rigid body and enrichment modes. The idea is borrowed from the previously published method for a specific range of enrichment functions and extended to...
Mesoscale finite element prediction of concrete failure
, Article Computational Materials Science ; Volume 50, Issue 7 , 2011 , Pages 1973-1990 ; 09270256 (ISSN) ; Hosseini, M ; Yaghoobi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
2011
Abstract
The present paper studies the failure of concrete from the mesoscopic point of view. Biphasic cubic concrete samples containing spherical aggregates embedded in a homogenized mortar have been simulated using standard finite element method. Linear elasticity and damage-plasticity hypotheses are considered for the aggregates and mortar, respectively. Various triaxial loading conditions are assumed for each sample to generate adequate discrete failure points within the stress space. In the next step, the approximated failure surfaces of specimens are constructed using the Delaunay triangulation technique. The effects of mesostructural features such as aggregate grading curve, aggregate...
Numerical modelling of dynamically loaded metal foam-filled square columns
, Article International Journal of Impact Engineering ; Volume 34, Issue 3 , 2007 , Pages 573-586 ; 0734743X (ISSN) ; Petrinic, N ; Vafai, A ; Sharif University of Technology
2007
Abstract
The crushing behaviour of dynamically loaded metal foam-filled square columns has been investigated using an extended version of the existing self-similar pressure dependent constitutive model for metal foams. The model has been implemented in ABAQUS/Explicit and analyses have been conducted using different approaches to model the uniaxial and hydrostatic hardening behaviour of metal foams. A practical and reliable procedure to approximate the observed anisotropic behaviour within the computational framework of isotropic plasticity is introduced. The comparison between the available experimental and newly generated numerical results is presented in order to illustrate the accuracy and...
Axial crushing of metal foam-filled square columns: Foam density distribution and impactor inclination effects
, Article Thin-Walled Structures ; Volume 43, Issue 12 , 2005 , Pages 1818-1830 ; 02638231 (ISSN) ; Vafai, A ; Petrinic, N ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, the effects of foam density distribution and initial impactor inclination angle on crushing behaviour of metal foam-filled thin-walled square columns have been investigated. The simplified version of an existing pressure dependent self-similar constitutive model with tensile failure for metal foam has been implemented in ABAQUS/Explicit code. Random distribution of cubic regions with normal distribution of density has been created. The analyses have been accomplished for three distinct foam densities, two extreme random distributions (fine and coarse), and five different impactor inclination angles. A local effect on folding patterns of columns filled with low-density foam has...
A parametric study of the bending crash performance of empty and metal foam-filled box-beams
, Article International Journal of Crashworthiness ; Volume 9, Issue 6 , 2004 , Pages 643-652 ; 13588265 (ISSN) ; Vafai, A ; Estekanchi, H. E ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The effect of spot welding failure, flange location, sheet metal thickness, glue presence in foam-wall contact area, and foam filling on the bending crash performance and the collapse mechanism of empty and foam-filled box-beams is investigated. It is observed that the flange location in box-beams controls spot welds force, the energy absorption capacity of box-beams, and collapse behavior of the sections. As a result, the definition of spot weld failure criterion is inevitable in most cases. A survey on the effect of slight aluminium foam filling (12% mass increase) shows that the specific energy absorption value (SEA) and the energy dissipation performance of a filled section can even...
Effect of Cell Morphology on Macroscopic Mechanical Behavior of Open-Cell Foams
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vafai, Abolhassan (Supervisor) ; Shahbeyk, Sharif (Supervisor)
Abstract
Solid foams are novel materials with outstanding characteristics that have found numerous applications in the construction of light, stiff structures during the past two decades. At the micro-level, solid foams benefit from a cellular structure, which is composed of either closed or open cells. Open-cell foams, which were the concern of this study, are described as a network of inter-connected struts (or ligaments) with beam-like action. The mechanical design of foams requires their mechanical properties to meet certain criteria. These criteria can be satisfied by careful selection of the base material and the microstructural morphology (geometry). However, the selected material has to be...
Implementation of an Explicit Finite Element Program for Simulation of Concrete Behavior Via Microplane Model
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vafaei, Abolhassan (Supervisor) ; Shahbeyk, Sharif (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research study, two constitutive models of improved Microplane are presented. The microplane model M1 is capable of simulation of a brittle aggregate material that undergoes progressive tensile fracturing or damage. It is assumed that the normal stress on a plane of any orientation within the material is a function of only the normal strain on the same microplane. This strain is further assumed to be equal to the resolved component of the macroscopic strain tensor, while the stress on the microplane is not equal to the resolved component of the macroscopic stress tensor. This model also is capable of simulating realistic tensile stress-strain curve with strain-softening and reduction...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vafai, Abolhassan (Supervisor) ; Shahbeyk, Sharif (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
The unique characteristics of solid foams make them ideal for both natural and man-made structures. The cellular structure of these materials allows for the construction of natural structures such as bone and wood that have high strength and use minimal primary materials. Their unique structure has inspired studies in the automotive and aerospace industries, leading to a new generation of lightweight materials. The focus of this study was the effects of the microstructure of foams on the macro mechanical response of specific structures. Homogenization methods are well suited for the study of these effects due to the random nature of the microstructures. One major problem in using numerical...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Vafai, Abolhassan (Supervisor) ; Shahbeyk, Sharif (Supervisor)
Abstract
Various theoretical studies have been developed to obtain a deeper understanding of concrete behavior lead to the concrete constitutive models in the macroscale. In these models, however, the microstructure of the concrete and its effects on the concrete behavior has not been taken into account.Several numerical approaches have been incorporated to determine the effects of concrete mesostructure on the overall behavior of concrete. They may be classified at least in three main groups. In the first group, Continuum finite element methods (FEM) equipped with interface elements is incorporated. Second group is to incorporate more efficient elements, such as lattice or truss elements, instead of...

Abstract
Learning a foreign language encompasses a process of trial and error that can lead to the progression of the learner's interlanguage, meaning that the learners make use of their language knowledge that receives feedback and brings about progress through diagnosis of the problems and being corrected by the teacher. Therefore, there exists a need to analyze the underlying reasons causing the students to remain taciturn with a low willingness to communicate (WTC) during a language class. There has been much work done investigating the role of the learner's stable personal characteristics (traits) along with their situational changes at a specific time (states) that influence the student's...

Abstract
Accurate system identification (SI) is essential for flight controller design of unmanned aerial vehicles and microaerial vehicles (MAVs). SI can be performed either in frequency or time domain using flight test data. As flight testing is often costly and may even lead to catastrophic events before some flight stability analysis is at hand, a low-cost 5 degree-of-freedom free motion platform (FMP) is designed and used for initial identification of MAVs via wind tunnel testing. A typical MAV is constructed as a test case and equipped with inertial sensors for testing and validation purposes. The proposed FMP allows for both rotational as well as translational motions that in turn provide for...

Abstract
Using 3-D scanned data to analyze and extract pore network plays a vital role in investigation of porous media's characteristics. In this paper, a new simple method is developed to detect pores and throats for analyzing the connectivity and permeability of the network. This automated method utilizes some of the common and well-known image processing functions which are widely accessible by researchers and this has led to an easy algorithm implementation. In this method, after polishing and quality control of images, using city-block distance function and watershed segmentation algorithm, pores and throats are detected and 3-D network is produced. This method can also be applied on 2-D images...

Abstract
In this paper, we try to recognize and distinguish different groups of arrhythmia using novel features which have been obtained from the heart rate's phase space in recent years. For this purpose, we used Triangular Phase Space Mapping (TPSM) and Parabolic Phase Space Mapping (PPSM). For recognition, we used three groups of 15 subjects using the Physionet database (Arrhythmia, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), and Atrial Fibrillation (AF)) with Normal Sinus Rhythm (NSR). The obtained features discriminate arrhythmia from NSR by p

Abstract
Uncertainty is a critical factor in medical datasets needed to be overcome for increasing diagnosis efficiency. This paper proposes an intelligent classification algorithm comprising a fuzzy rule-based approach, a harmony search (HS) algorithm, and a heuristic algorithm to classify medical datasets intelligently. Two fuzzy approaches, as well as orthogonal and triangular fuzzy sets, are first utilized to define the attributes of data. Then, an HS algorithm is integrated with a heuristic to generate fuzzy rules to select the best rules in the fuzzy rule-based systems. Moreover, to improve the performance of the proposed classification approach, a three-phase parameter tuning approach is...

Abstract
Shared hosting is a kind of web hosting in which multiple websites reside on one webserver. It is cost-effective and makes the administration easier for websites' owners. However, shared hosting has some performance and security issues. In default shared hosting configuration, all websites' scripts are executed under the webserver's user account regardless of their owners. Therefore, a website is able to access other websites' resources. This security problem arises from lack of proper isolation between different websites hosted on the same webserver. In this survey, we have examined different methods for handling mentioned security issue. Also we evaluated the performance of mentioned...
The behaviour of an artificially cemented sandy gravel

Abstract
The major section of the city of Tehran, Iran has been developed on cemented coarse-grained alluvium. This deposit consists of gravely sand to sandy gravel with some cobbles and is dominantly cemented by carbonaceous materials. In order to understand the mechanical behaviour of this soil, a series of undrained triaxial compression tests and unconfined compression tests were performed on uncemented and artificially cemented samples. Portland cement type I was used as the cementation agent for preparing artificially cemented samples. Uncemented samples and lightly cemented samples (1.5% cement) tested at high confining pressure showed contractive behaviour accompanied with positive excess pore...

Abstract
In the context of sustainable clean hydrogen production pathways, photovoltaic-electrolyzer systems are one of the most promising alternatives for acquiring hydrogen from renewable energy sources. In fact, determining the optimal set of design and operating variables are always a key issue while coupling directly renewable electricity sources to PEM electrolyzers. Few previous studies have attempted to find the optimal size and operational condition of directly coupled photovoltaic-electrolyzer (PV/El) systems in order to maximize the hydrogen production or to minimize energy transfer loss between photovoltaic devices and the electrolyzer. Nevertheless an easy and efficient approach still...
Kalman filter based packet loss replacement in presence of additive noise

Abstract
A major problem in real-time packet-based communication systems, is misrouted or delayed packets which results in degraded perceived voice quality. If packets are not available on time, the packets are considered as lost. The easiest solution in a network terminal receiver is to replace silence for the duration of lost speech segments. In a high quality communication system, to avoid degradation in speech quality due to packet loss, a suitable method or algorithm is needed to replace the missing segments of speech. In this paper, we introduce an adaptive filter for replacement of lost speech segment. In this method Kalman filter as a state-space based method will be used to predict the...

Abstract
In this research, an extended finite element model has been investigated. Investigation of opening and closure stress always has been one of the difficult parameters to analysis of results; therefore, the utilization of finite element methods would be a good and logical alternative for this purpose. In addition, linear elastic fracture criteria are used for validation of numerical results from the simulation. In this work, a detailed analysis of the influence of different parameters in the results of a specific specimen with a semi-elliptical tooling groove in terms of closure and opening stress is presented, and the impact of optimum element size in fracture characteristic in various load...

Abstract
The effects of different nano-SiO2 contents on the rheological properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) solution and mechanical, thermal, structural, and piezoelectric properties of composite nanofibers were investigated. Results showed an increase in fiber diameter (∼125 to 350 nm) and ∼450% increase in tensile strength as the content of nano-SiO2 particles increased. The degree of crystallinity decreased by 19% as the nano-SiO2 content increased by 2% (w/w). Further investigation demonstrated that silica could significantly improve the piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibers as the output voltage showed an increase in the presence of silica attributed to change in the crystalline...
