Cyclic Behavior of Interior Reinforced Concrete Beam-column Connection with Self-consolidating
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A significant amount of research in self-consolidating concrete technology is being placed in evaluating the suitability of the material for use in structural applications. However, research is needed to confirm the ability of self-consolidating concrete structural elements to adequately resist vertical and lateral loads. In a reinforced concrete building subjected to earthquake type loading, the beam to column connections constitute one of the critical regions and they must be designed and detailed to dissipate large amounts of energy without a significant loss of stiffness or strength. In the experimental part of this study, four full size interior beam-column subassemblages with 3.0 m...

Abstract
A significant amount of research on self-consolidating concrete (SCC) technology has been devoted to evaluating the suitability of the material for its use in structural applications. However, more research is required to confirm the adequacy of SCC structural members for resisting gravity and seismic loads. This study focuses on the experimental investigation of the seismic performance of interior reinforced concrete beam-column connections with SCC. Four beam-column connection specimens, three with SCC and one with normally vibrated concrete (NC), were designed for this experimental study. Factors such as concrete type (SCC or NC) and axial load ratio (0, 7.5 and 15 % of column section...

Specifically I discuss the recently developed algorithms that are based on matrix algebra, which simplify and enhance the efficiencies of algorithms in OOC generation. In communication systems studies I first focus on and discuss various OCDMA...
Optimum receiver design for transmitted-reference signaling [electronic resource]
, Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; May 2010, Volume 58, Issue 5, P.1589-1598 ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Autocorrelation receiver (AcR) is usually used as the general receiver for transmitted reference (TR) communication systems on a quite intuitive basis. In this paper, we apply the principle of statistical invariance to obtain the optimum TR receiver on a decision-theoretic basis, and it is shown that the autocorrelation receiver is optimal only in a special case. Performance of the optimum receiver and the suboptimum AcR for some important modulation schemes is also evaluated. The results imply that allocating a part of the transmitted energy and bandwidth to reference pulses would not help improve the performance of the system and the optimal performance might be achieved via much simpler...
Multi-rate and multi-quality of service passive optical network based on hybrid WDM/OCDM system [electronic resource]
, Article IEEE Communications Magazine ; February 2011, Volume 49, Issue 2, PP. S39-S44 ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this article we present a new scheme to support multirate and multi-quality-of-service transmission in passive optical networks based on a hybrid wavelength-division multiplexing/optical code-division multiplexing scheme. The idea is to use multilength variable-weight optical orthogonal codes as signature sequences of a hybrid WDM/OCDM system. To provide the requested classes of service, the code weight and code length of MLVW-OOCs are designed based on the characteristics of the requested classes of service. In order to mitigate multiple access interference, we propose to utilize a multilevel signaling technique and interference remover structure based on advanced optical logic gate...

, Article IET Communications ; July 2011, Volume 5, Issue 10, P. 1328-1335 ; Mashhadi, Saeed ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this study the authors present an in-depth study, analysis and discussion on maximum likelihood (ML)-based receiver for a typical spectrally encoded spread-time CDMA in the presence of multiple narrowband interference (NBI) signals in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. Furthermore, the authors demonstrate that by combining useful properties of ML-based receiver and three-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, 0, +1, the authors can introduce a new strategy in which superior performance with respect to previous receiver structure based on two-level codes, that is, codes with values of -1, +1, can be attained. With the help of an example, the authors drive, first, the...

Abstract
A novel packet-based photonic label switching router for a multirate all-optical switch using generalized multiprotocol label switching is proposed. The idea is based on using optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) as multiplexing technique and treating OCDMA codes as labels. The system can coexist with current wavelength division multiplexing systems on the same infrastructure. The concept of switch fabric is introduced. Label processing and label swapping functionalities of the switch are discussed. In-depth analyses are made for spectrally phase-encoded OCDMA (SPE-OCDMA) due to its capabilities of supporting high data rates, large code cardinality, and its secure transmission....

, Article IEEE Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Vol. 26, No. 15, PP. 2594-2603, August 2008 ; Cabon, B ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University Of Technology
Abstract
In this paper we examine the transmission of two types of ultra-wideband (UWB) signals, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) and impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB), over single mode fiber at 1550 nm. In order to investigate the impact of optical components such as laser diode, external modulator and single mode fiber on UWB signals, we develop mathematical models for these components. These models are experimentally verified and corresponding numerical parameter values are obtained by experiment. Using these models we discuss the transmission of two types of UWB signals over single mode fiber. A new figure of merit namely distortion factor is defined. Using...

, Article IEEE Transactions on Communications ; October 2011, Vol 59, No. 10, P. 2818-2831 ; Matinfar, M. D ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper we study and evaluate the performance of a spectral-phase encoded optical CDMA (SPE-OCDMA) system using advanced receiver structures based on second harmonic generation (SHG) effect imposed in a Thick or Thin crystal. This receiver structure is employed as the nonlinear pre-processor prior to the conventional low-speed photodetector. In our performance evaluation amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of the optical amplifiers, receiver front end thermal noise and photodetector shot noise which are effective in low power conditions, and multiple access interference (MAI) noise which is the dominant source of noise in high power conditions in any coherent OCDMA communications...
Experimental Investigation of Asphaltene Precipitation and Deposition in Enhanced Oil Recovery by Low Salinity Waterflooding
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ayatollahi, Shahabadin (Supervisor) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Asphaltenes are a polydisperse mixture of the heaviest and most polarizable fractions of the crude oil. They are defined according to their solubility properties as being soluble in aromatic solvents but insoluble in light paraffin solvents. Asphaltenes are usually responsible for many problems like wettability changes of the reservoir rock, pore clogging in the reservoir porous matrix and fouling in wellbore tubing and production surface facilities. Most of the studies in the literature, addressing the asphaltene precipitation and deposition (APD), are investigating natural depletion or gas injection process such as CO2 flooding. These studies show that asphaltene deposition and...
Internally channel-coded framed time-hopping fiber-optic CDMA communications
, Article IEEE/OSA Journal of Lightwave Technology ; Vol.23, No.11, PP. 3702-3707, Nov. 2005 ; Nasiri-Kenari, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University Of Technology
Abstract
Due to the low cardinality of optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) with a correlation value of 1, the capability of an internal channel-coding scheme cannot be applied effectively for an increasing number of simultaneous users in a typical fiber-optic code division multiple-access (FO-CDMA) system. In this paper, we consider applying the internal channel-coding scheme to the framed time-hopping (FTH) FO-CDMA system. Due to the extremely high cardinality of the spreading sequence in FTH FO-CDMA, the technique highlights the ability of the internal channel-coding scheme to increase the effective number of users in an FO-CDMA system. For the FTH FO-CDMA system, we only consider a Poisson...
Phase-induced intensity noise in digital incoherent all-optical tapped-delay line systems [electronic resource]
, Article Lightwave Technology, Journal of ; 2006, Volume.24 , Issue. 8, p.3059-3072 ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper, the authors analyze conditions under which they can be certain on the intensity addition of a given device, such as tapped-delay lines, used in digital incoherent all-optical communication systems. A general expression for phase-induced intensity noise that is applicable to all types of semiconductor lasers is derived by defining an optical self-SNR expression that can be used to analyze and measure phase-induced intensity noise. The result shows that in order to have a minimal phase-induced intensity noise in most digital optical incoherent systems, a large optical self-SNR, e.g., 20 dB or more, is needed. This in turn is shown to place a limit on the maximum rate of...

Abstract
In this paper, we present a multi-user resource allocation framework using fragmented-spectrum synchronous OFDM-CDMA modulation over a frequency-selective fading channel. In particular, given pre-existing communications in the spectrum where the system is operating, a channel sensing and estimation method is used to obtain information of subcarrier availability. Given this information, some real-valued multi-level orthogonal codes, which are orthogonal codes with values of {±1, ±2, ±3, ±4,...}, are provided for emerging new users, i.e., cognitive radio users. Additionally, we have obtained a closed form expression for bit error rate of cognitive radio receivers in terms of detection...

Abstract
In this paper we present and investigate a digital design and implementational details of a wireless optical CDMA (OCDMA) system based on generalized optical orthogonal codes (OOCs). A detailed digital implementation analysis and transmitter/receiver architectures in the context of the above design are fully studied. We analyze various subsystems for a wireless OCDMA system including detector and receiver structure, acquisition, and tracking blocks as well as evaluating their performance in a typical wireless OCDMA communication system. By analyzing two main parts of the system, namely, chip-level detector and OCDMA receiver blocks we evaluate the performance of the overall system....

, Article IEEE Transaction on Communication ; Vol. 56, No. 12, PP. 2145-2155, December 2008 ; Matinfar, M ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this paper we study and present an in-depth analysis on the operability and the viability of a typical wireless optical CDMA (OCDMA) local area network. Three receiver structures for OCDMA systems, using optical orthogonal codes (OOC) with minimum auto and cross-correlations as signature sequence, namely, correlation, correlation with hard-limiter, and chip-level detection are studied and proposed for such a network. For the synchronization circuit design the performance of two algorithms for OOC based OCDMA networks, namely, simple serial-search and multiple-shift in the context of wireless OCDMA LAN are studied. Furthermore, we study a synchronization method based on matched filtering...
2D Compositional Simulation of Reservoirs using Finite Volume Method
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the main purposes of this project is to propose an efficient and stable algorithm of a semi-discretized formulation for compositional simulation of oil reservoirs. In this algorithm, all the equations including both mass balances and equilibrium equations are solved simultaneously. The gradient terms are discretized by the Finite Volume Method (FVM). The resulting Differential Algebraic Equation, the so-called DAE, are solved by MATLAB functions. Another novel technique developed, handles each block equations set, separately. In this block-by-block scheme, there are two set of equations; the primary (mass balance) and secondary (equilibrium) equations. In the primary ones, the...
Experimental Investigation of Fractures’ Water Shut-off in Low Salinity Water Injection Using Preformed Particle Gels
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
As the reservoir matures, especially in fractured reservoirs, oil production is usually accompanied by the production of some unwanted water. Water production causes environmental problems and imposes high costs on the production system, including the cost of separating water and oil, corrosion of facility, and sometimes, leading to abandoning well. One way to solve this problem is to use gels as a blocking agent. Today, preformed particle gels are used as an alternative to in situ gels, which can solve some issues of in-situ gels, such as uncertainty in gelling time and penetration depth. This research comprises three main parts. In the first part, four samples of preformed particle gels...
Experimental Investigation and Modeling of Flow ّunction Variation in Enhanced oil Recovery Using Low Salinity/Smart Water Injection in a Carbonate Reservoir
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Low salinity water flooding (LSWF) as an efficient enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique is proved to affect both, fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions to potentially release the trapped oil from the porous rock. Despite more than one decade of extensive research works on the low salinity water effect (LSWE), there are still many parameters to be studied for very complex cases. Therefore, in the first part of the experimental study of the dissertation, a systematic investigation on the effect of the initial wetting state (water-wet or oil-wet) of pure calcite is conducted to study the importance of fluid/fluid and fluid/rock interactions for LSWE investigation. In the case of initially...
