    Abstract
The conventional delay-line discriminator method for phase noise measurement is modified to achieve better sensitivity. In the proposed technique, to decrease delay-line loss, the under-test oscillator's microwave frequency is down-converted by another oscillator, and delay-line is implemented in the IF range. Full validation of the technique is presented. In adition, we experimentally demonstrate that system sensitivity is considerably improved compared to the conventional method

Phase Noise Measurment of Microwave Oscillators by Downconversion without Using Synthesizer

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi Barzegar, Alireza (Author) ; Farzaneh, Forouhar (Supervisor) ; Banai, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a modified method based on frequency discriminator technique is presented for measuring phase noise of microwave oscillators. In the proposed method, we use two oscillators with similar phase noise, but their free running frequencies are different in the range of 10MHz~50MHz. Mixing these two oscillators results in the IF frequency, for which the phase noise power at each offset has been doubled. The delay line is used in IF frequency and a phase shifter at microwave or millimeter wave range is used to provide quadrarure condition. Hence the cable loss at IF frequency is low and the sensitivity of system will be very good. Comparison of the measured data at X-band (the...

Reducing the Energy Overhead of Replication Mechanisms in Distributed Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi Khanghahbar, Mohammad (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Distributed embedded systems are widely used in safety-critical applications, such as avionics platform and flight control system. Faults in such applications may cause catastrophic effect. Therefore, these systems must be fault-tolerant and must be designed not only to detect faults but also to recover from faults. Fault tolerance is normally realized on multi-processor system via temporal duplication (time-redundancy) or spatial duplication (hardware-redundancy) depending on the availability of the slack time. Slack time is defined as the difference between the deadline and execution time. Duplication is a common technique to achieve fault tolerance in safety-critical applications, but may...

Energy Efficient Memory Management Techniques for Multicore Embedded Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi-Minapour, Farzaneh (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy consumption is one of the most crucial issues in embedded systems and memories are responsible for a considerable portion of it. Furthermore, leakage power is becoming the dominant part of total power consumption as the feature size of transistors is scaled down, therefore, the memory management must be improved in order to mitigate the negative effect of increased static power dissipation. In this study, a new memory architecture and a new data mapping algorithm are presented that reduce the energy consumption of multi-core embedded systems while respecting the timing constraints. We propose a novel two-level scratch-pad memory (SPM) based on STTRAM, which is a type of non-volatile...

System-level Energy Management for Hard Real-time Embedded Systems

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Salehi Khanghahbar, Mohammad (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Many embedded systems must be highly reliable and have hard real-time constraints. Technology scaling has enabled integration of multiple fast cores in a single chip. This provides higher computation speed that can achieve low response time in real-time systems. However, shrinking transistor dimensions aggravates reliability threats. Furthermore, hard real-time embedded systems are usually subjected to severe power and energy consumption limitations imposed by battery and cooling units. Therefore, designing hard real-time embedded systems requires careful considerations of reliability and power/energy consumption issues. High reliability can be achieved through exploiting fault tolerance...

    Abstract
In this research the behavior of Circular Steel Tubes (CSTs) with corrosion under axial force and bending have been studied. There are several factors leading to corrosion in steel structures, especially marine structures that results in strength reduction of whole structure. Steel tubes are widely used in construction of on-shore and off-shore structures such as, oil rigs and platforms, oil and gas transmission lines. Current study focus on strength reduction of steel tubes with “pitting corrosion”. To this end numerical analyses using finite element software, Abaqus, have been performed. Therefore, utilizing verified models, the simultaneous effect of bending, axial load and corrosion on...

QBism is not so simply dismissed

    , Article Foundations of Physics ; Volume 50, Issue 7 , 2020 , Pages 693-707 Barzegar, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
QBism is one of the main candidates for an epistemic interpretation of quantum mechanics. According to QBism, the quantum state or the wavefunction represents the subjective degrees of belief of the agent assigning the state. But, although the quantum state is not part of the furniture of the world, quantum mechanics grasps the real via the Born rule which is a consistency condition for the probability assignments of the agent. In this paper, we evaluate the plausibility of recent criticism of QBism. We focus on the consequences of the subjective character of the quantum state, the issue of realism and the problem of the evolution of the quantum state in QBism. In particular, drawing upon...

    , Article IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation ; Volume 9, Issue 12 , September , 2015 , Pages 1287-1296 ; 17518725 (ISSN) Barzegar Parizi, S ; Rejaei ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2015
    Abstract
An analysis is presented of the effective electromagnetic parameters of high-permittivity, anisotropic artificial dielectrics which are built by stacking arrays of metallic elements and conventional dielectric films, with adjacent arrays shifted with respect to each other. The effective parameters of the artificial dielectric are extracted from the scattering coefficients of plane electromagnetic waves which are normally or obliquely incident on a slab of the artificial material with finite thickness. These coefficients are derived from the generalised scattering matrix of a single layer of metallic elements which is computed using the integral equation technique. Both two-dimensional and...

    Abstract
Glioma is one of the most frequent primary brain tumors in adults that arise from glial cells. Automatic and accurate segmentation of glioma is critical for detecting all parts of tumor and its surrounding tissues in cancer detection and surgical planning. In this paper, we present a reliable classification framework for detection and segmentation of abnormal tissues including brain glioma tumor portions such as edemas and tumor core. This framework learns weighted features extracted from the 3D cubic neighborhoods regarding to gray-level differences that indicate the spatial relationships among voxels. In addition to intensity values in each slice, we consider sets of three consecutive...
