    Abstract
    Drying of green peas in a Fluidized Bed Dryer (FBD) with inert particle, heated by combined sources of hot air and InfraRed (IR) radiation, has been experimentally and theoretically studied. For this purpose, an experimental set up was constructed. This setup was composed of a cylindrical bed dryer containing some inert particles which are fluidized by hot air. Some infrared lamps were also placed around the bed for heating assistance. A sample of green pea was hung in the fluidized bed and its moisture content, surface and central temperature were measured with time.     The adsorptive removal of terephthalic acid (TPA) and p-toluic acid (p-tol) by metal organic frameworks (MOF) of Cu-BTC, Fe-BTC, MIL-101(Cr) and MIL-53(Al) was investigated in this study. The influence of various factors including solution pH, contact time, and initial concentration of TPA and p-tol solutions on the adsorption behavior was evaluated. Different adsorption isotherms and kinetic models were used to fit experimental adsorption data.     To investigate the gas–solid flow pattern of a combustor-style fluid catalytic cracking regenerator, a laboratory-scale regenerator was designed. In scaling down from an actual regenerator, large-diameter hydrodynamic effects were taken into consideration. These considerations are the novelties of the present study. Applying the Eulerian–Eulerian approach, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the regenerator was developed.     Abstract
    Several corrosion inhibitors, such as, HEDP, sodium molybdate and zinc ions, were added to an aqueous corrosive media containing different concentrations chloride ions, and the corrosion rates (CRs) of carbon steel were measured at various temperatures. It was shown that, in the presence of more than 1,200 ppm of chloride ions, and temperatures greater than or equal to 42.5°C, the combination of HEDP, molybdate and zinc could not control the corrosion in a cooling water system.     Abstract
    In this study, the influence of CO2 and CH4 on the performance and selectivity of Co-Ru/Al2O3 catalyst is investigated by injection of these gases (0-20 vol.% of feed) to the feed stream. The effect of temperature and feed flow rate are also inspected. The results show that low amounts of CO2 in the feed stream do not change the catalyst activity, but increasing the amount of CO2 (more than 10 vol.%), causes the CO conversion to decrease and the selectivity of heavy components to increase. Methane acts as an inert gas and does not affect the catalyst performance. Increasing feed flow rate has a negative effect on both CO conversion and heavy component selectivity.     Abstract
    Palladium catalysts supported on functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes were synthesized for hydro-purification of crude terephthalic acid containing 2100ppm 4-carboxybenzaldehyde (4-CBA) as impurity. PdCl2 and Pd(OAc)2 were used as precursors. Palladium loadings were 0.05 to 0.6wt.% with catalysts reduced at 200 to 400°C. Catalysts prepared from both precursors with least 0.3wt.% palladium resulted in 99%+ removal of 4-CBA. The most desired selectivity was obtained for the catalyst with PdCl2 as precursor, reduction temperature of 300°C, and palladium loading of 0.3wt.%.     The solubility of hydrogen sulfide gas in ionic liquids (ILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([emim][PF6]) at temperatures from (333.15 to 363.15) K and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethyl)sulfonylimide ([emim][Tf2N]) at temperatures ranging from (303.15 to 353.15) K and pressures up to about 2.0 MPa was measured using a volumetric based static apparatus.     Some physical and aerodynamic properties of pistachio nut and its kernel were determined in order to design processing equipment and facilities. In this study, several physical properties of pistachio nut and its kernel were evaluated as a function of moisture content in the range of 4.10-38.10% (w.b.). The length, width, height, shell splitting and unit mass of pistachio nut ranged from 16.07 to 17.25 mm, 12.41 to 12.75 mm, 10.98 to 12.24 mm, 3.59 to 4.47 mm and 0.90 to 1.30 g respectively as the moisture content increased.     Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer coefficient have been experimentally measured on a horizontal rod heater for various liquid binary mixtures. Measurements are based on more than three hundred data points on a wide range of concentrations and heat fluxes.     A mathematical model was introduced to describe the heat transfer behaviour of moist wheat bran beds. Comparison of predicted transient temperature profiles with experimental data collected in a simulated bed was used to evaluate bed thermal conductivity at various conditions. This parameter was correlated with the bed density and moisture content via a mathematical relation. Furthermore, extent of error in thermal conductivity evaluation resulted from neglecting water vapour diffusion was quantified. Results provide useful means to design, analyse, and predict the behaviour of solid state fermenters in a more reliable manner. © 2005 Institution of Chemical Engineers
