Integration Frameworks for Assimilating Satellite Remote Sensing Observations with Hydrological Model Outputs
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ataie Ashtiani, Behzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Global climate change and anthropogenic impacts lead to alterations in the water cycle, water resource availability and the frequency and intensity of floods and droughts. As a result, developing effective techniques such as hydrological modeling is essential to monitor and predict water storage changes. However, inaccuracies and uncertainties in different aspects of modeling, due to simplification of meteorological physical processes, data limitations and inaccurate climate forcing data limit the reliability of hydrological models. Assimilation of new observations constrains the dynamics of the model based on uncertainties associated with model and data, which can introduce missing water...

Abstract
Purpose - Digital Delta Sigma Modulator (DDSM) is used widely in electronic circuits including Radars, class-D power amplifiers and fractional frequency synthesizers. The purpose of this paper is to propose an implementation for MASH DDSMs named as Multi Modulus Reduced Complexity (MMRC) architecture. Design/methodology/approach - This architecture will use a very simple pseudorandom Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) dither signal with period N-d to randomize the digital MMRC modulator used for fractional frequency synthesizers. Using error masking methodology, the MMRC modulator can decrease the hardware consumption and increase accuracy of the fractional frequency synthesizer. Rules...

Abstract
Hydrological models play a crucial role in tracking and predicting terrestrial water storage, yet they face challenges due to uncertainties and inaccuracies caused by various factors such as meteorological processes and data limitations. To refine these models, data assimilation has emerged as a valuable tool, utilizing a new source of data to update model states while considering associated uncertainties, thereby enhancing our comprehension and predictive capabilities in hydrological processes. In this context, satellite data are receiving increasing attention because they can cover large areas and are useful in detecting spatial and temporal variability of water. In most existing studies...

Abstract
Controlling the safe distances between vehicles on freeways can be used to prevent many accidents. In this research, image-processing techniques have been used to develop an online system that calculates the longitudinal distances between vehicles. This system facilitates controlling safe distances between vehicles without the need for high technology devices. Our approach is real-time and simple, but efficient operations have been used to reduce the image occlusion problem. The main concept of this system is using simple, quick, and effective algorithms for calculating the position of each vehicle in each image. In this way, traffic parameters like speed and distances between vehicles can...

Abstract
Production of glucoamylase (GA) by using various agro-wastes as carbon sources has been widely carried out as an environmentally friendly approach with a competent value-added result. Similar to other value-added products generated by a bioconversion process, the characteristics of produced enzymes highly depend on the selected medium and microbial strain. Oilseeds such as canola, safflower, soybean, and sunflower are among those agricultural products in the country with a rising rate of production. Therefore, optimal use of their meals will lead to economic and environmental profitability. Thus, in the present study, dry potato peel and waste, soybean, canola, sunflower and safflower meals...
Effects of preparation conditions on the morphology and gas permeation properties of polyethylene (PE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) films
, Article Chemical Engineering Research and Design ; Volume 88, Issue 12 , 2010 , Pages 1593-1598 ; 02638762 (ISSN) ; Gholizadeh, M ; Sedghi, S ; Pourafshari Chenar, M ; Ahmad Soltani, B ; Soltani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this study, the effect of film preparation conditions on the gas permeation properties of polyethylene (PE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) films (containing 18 and 28wt% vinyl acetate) was investigated. Film blowing and phase inversion methods were applied in the production of PE and EVA films, respectively. The permeation of pure oxygen and carbon dioxide gases was measured at room temperature. The results indicated that with the increase of PE film thickness, permeability and solubility of O2 and CO2 in these films decreased; but the diffusivities of gases through PE films increased. In addition, in the case of EVA copolymers, by increasing the content of vinyl acetate, the...
Mid-defense: Mitigating protocol-level attacks in TOR using indistinguishability obfuscation
, Article 2014 11th International ISC Conference on Information Security and Cryptology, ISCISC 2014 ; 3- 4 September , 2014 , pp. 214-219 ; ISBN: 9781479953837 ; Najafi, S ; Jalili, R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
TOR is one of the most famous anonymity networks. TOR works correctly when at least one honest relay exists along an established circuit. However, many attacks reveal anonymity of TOR communications by watermarking traffics, changing timings, counting cells per packets, and recently, introducing errors in cells. This paper focuses on protocol-level attacks which can de-anonymize users by changing a cell, and provides a solution for this attack by changing the way integrities of cells are checked. The proposed design allows all relays, not just the exit node, to check the integrity of cells, independently. In addition, this paper proposes a novel method, based on the concept of...

Abstract
This work aims to calculate interlaminar stress distribution through the thickness of multilayered composite shell structures by employing a novel nonlinear layer-wise shell finite element formulation. Adapting the Mindlin– Reissner theory in each layer, the shear-deformable layer-wise shell element presents the interlaminar shear stress distributions by increasing the number of layers. The interlaminar normal stress distribution is then determined using the finite difference solution of the general form of equilibrium equation in the non-orthogonal curvilinear grid along the Gaussian points. Two boundary conditions at the bottom and the top surfaces are satisfied by adopting the linear...

2022
Abstract
Herein, the effect of electrodeposition time on the super-capacitive performance of three-dimensional (3D) MnO2/g-C3N4 heterostructured electrodes was investigated. MnO2 nanoparticles were electrodeposited on the g-C3N4 nanosheets drop-casted on the Ni foam substrate. The microstructural analysis, carried out by FE-SEM and TEM, confirmed the homogeneous distribution of MnO2 nanoparticles on g-C3N4 nano-sheet layers. The electrochemical capacitive performances of the MnO2/g-C3N4 electrodes were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge/discharge tests, and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). The obtained results suggested that the supercapacitor (SC) performance of all...

Abstract
We have studied the relation between the spark-gap operation parameters and the plasma pinch and Neutron yield in our Filippov-type plasma focus, Dena, with 90kJ energy storage bank (25kV, 0.288mF). It has been found that better pinches with regard to their Neutron yield, generally are associated with a faster breakdown in the trigger-able spark-gap as well as higher current buildup rate. We have measured the current buildup speed at various operating conditions and derived the experimental primary ionization parameter and drift velocity of electrons, at extremely high field to pressure ratios. Also, an elaborate axisymmetric variational time-domain finite element simulation code has been...

Abstract
A generalized equation based on modified Eyring's theory for predicting kinematic viscosity of petroleum fractions is proposed in this work. The equation uses two reference fluids including a pair of (C6 and C10), (C10 and C14), or (C14 and C20) for petroleum fractions of molecular weight higher than 70 and lower than 300. Validity and accuracy of this equation have been confirmed by comparing the obtained results of this equation with experimental data. In contrast to other correlations that require so many specific parameters for oil viscosity prediction, this type of equation requires only molecular weight and true boiling point. The results obtained in this work are in agreement with...

Abstract
A phase frequency detector (PFD) with a very low dead zone is proposed which is based on a configuration adaptable to both CMOS or carbon nano-tube transistors (CNTFETs). In the first step the proposed configuration is designed using CMOS transistors, and then CNTFETs are substituted to improve the speed and reduce the propagation delay. The proposed PFD in addition to very low dead zone, has low power consumption and high frequency range of operation, which are achieved as a result of the elimination of the reset path. The simulation results based on 32 nm technology for CNTFET and 180 nm technology for CMOS, illustrate that CNTFET-based proposed circuit dissipates 2 µW and has frequency of...
Cluster-based adaptive SVM: a latent subdomains discovery method for domain adaptation problems
, Article Computer Vision and Image Understanding ; Volume 162 , 2017 , Pages 116-134 ; 10773142 (ISSN) ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Machine learning algorithms often suffer from good generalization in testing domains especially when the training (source) and test (target) domains do not have similar distributions. To address this problem, several domain adaptation techniques have been proposed to improve the performance of the learning algorithms when they face accuracy degradation caused by the domain shift problem. In this paper, we focus on the non-homogeneous distributed target domains and propose a new latent subdomain discovery model to divide the target domain into subdomains while adapting them. It is expected that applying adaptation on subdomains increase the rate of detection in comparing with the situation...
Outage-dependent and traditional power optimisations for amplify and forward incremental relaying with channel estimation errors
, Article IET Communications ; Volume 6, Issue 10 , 3 July , 2012 , Pages 1234-1244 ; Sadeghi, P ; Pakravan, M. R. (Mohammad Reza) ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this study, the authors optimise the outage probability of amplify and forward incremental relaying (IR) scheme using two different power allocation methods in the presence of channel estimation errors. The authors find the outage probability of IR scheme and minimise it subject to traditional power (TP) constraint in which the sum of nodes' powers is fixed and outage-dependent power (ODP) constraint which is compatible with the physical concept of IR and takes into account the quality of the direct path in the optimisation problem. The authors provide closed-form expressions to allocate power to pilot and data symbols of both the source and the relay. Although, their analysis uses high...

Abstract
This paper studies the statistical properties of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the dual-hop relaying link in a cooperative wireless communication system in the presence of channel estimation errors for fixed-gain (FG) and variable-gain (VG) relays. The SNR expression is derived and three different analytical approaches with different simplifying assumptions are proposed to obtain the probability distribution function of the SNR and the outage probability in each mode. All but one approach result in closed-form expressions for the outage probability. The simplest approach in each mode has been used to find an optimum power allocation scheme for pilot and data symbols transmission at the...

Abstract
A numerical code for supersonic intake design with a proper simulation of the normal and/or oblique shocks, boundary layer development, interaction of the shock and the boundary layer, as well as prediction of the flow separation is of great help to the designers. In this research, a numerical code is developed to solve the inner and outer flow fields of the intake and validated with various experimental tests. The intake is an axisymmetric external compression one. Roe scheme and new schemes, AUSM+-up (for all speed) and Advection Upstream Splitting Method with Pressure-Based Weight function (AUSMPW), are used to compute the convective fluxes. The original version of the AUSMPW scheme has...

Abstract
The performance and the buzz onset of a supersonic mixed-compression axisymmetric intake are experimentally investigated. Effectsof the slot bleed position, angle, and width onthe intake performance and onthe buzz initiation at three different Mach numbers of 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 and at a zero degree angle of attack are studied. The intake performance is assessed using the total pressure recovery, mass flow ratio, flow distortion, and bleed mass flow ratio. The results show that applying the bleed at a position near the intake entrance and reducing the bleed entrance slant angle and width all improve the intake performance considerably. Moreover, these parameters postpone the buzz onset. In...

Abstract
This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the geometrically nonlinear behavior of corrugated laminated composite shells (CLCS) under quasi-static loading along the corrugated direction. A geometrically nonlinear layer-wise shell finite element formulation is adopted to study the behavior of CLCS under large deformation by modeling of incremental different moduli in the tensile and compressive regimes through the thickness, where the spatial location of neutral axis shifts with deformation. A master curve is presented to estimate the value of compressive modulus from given tensile and flexural moduli. Using the prepreg autoclave method, the paper also describes practical...

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been at the frontline of nanotechnology for the recent decade due to their significant porosity, large surface area, varied configuration, and tunable chemical architecture. However, the utilization of these compounds in biomedicine is facing severe challenges. These problems can be addressed by an innovative approach via hybridizing MOFs with natural polymers such as cellulose, which have excellent mechanical properties and biodegradability and are easily modified chemically. Cellulose-MOFs (CelloMOFs) are new, appealing hybrid composites that provide unique properties unavailable in other materials by conjugating cellulosic derivatives with MOFs. The...

Abstract
Water-soluble peptidocalix[4]arenes were synthesized by the introduction of arginine-rich narrow groove-binding residues at lower rims through solid-phase synthesis. The study of binding of these water-soluble bidentate ligands to well-matched and mismatched DNA duplexes by fluorescent titrations, ethidium bromide (EB) displacement assays, DNA-melting experiments, and circular dichroism (CD) analysis revealed a sequence-dependent groove-binding mechanism
