Sustainable Development Model of Energy Sector Based on Exergy Flow Concept
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Sabouhi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sustainable development of the energy sector, as a resource-consuming sector with high environmental emissions, is essential. Especially in energy-intensive countries such as Iran with a sensitive environment, the sustainability considerations are more critical. The sustainability may be achieved when all pillars (economic, social, and environmental) are considered in a balanced manner. Previous economic experiences show the incapability of the market view in proper consideration of the ecosystem assets. Therefore, and in contrast to the economic view, in the physical approaches the limited capacity of the cosystem bounds the economic activities for meeting social welfare. In this view, the...

Abstract
Purpose: This paper aims to propose a novel matrix-based systematic approach for vulnerability assessment. Design/methodology/approach: The proposed method consists of two major steps. First, the power network is modeled as a topological combination of edges (transmission lines, transformers, etc.) and nodes (buses, substations, etc.). The second step is to use an axiomatic design-based index for topology analysis. This index is based on the systematic counting of possible routes from the start (generators) to destination (loads), considering load importance, before and after a disruption. Findings: The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through an illustrative example and...

Abstract
Extreme weather events such as earthquake and hurricane have disastrous consequences on power systems. Due to the inherent nature of these events, as high-impact low-probability (HILP) events, selection of an appropriate method that can provide the effects of weather conditions on the power system behavior still remains a significant challenge. Resilience is a new concept that focuses on mitigating the destructive effects of such disastrous events on power systems. This article provides a fundamental framework for quantifying and modeling of power systems resilience, with focus on high wind incidence. The algorithm composes of four steps. In the first step, the prerequisites of the analysis...

Abstract
With the capacity increase of large-scale DC renewable energy and DC loads, the reliability issues of hybrid AC/DC networks become increasingly prominent. On the other hand, a modern distribution network should also deliver power to individual customers based on their priority levels and the traditional reliability indices are not suitable for modern networks. Flexible reliability (FR) is a new concept that considers the loads' importance in the reliability evaluation of distribution grids. In this study, a novel comprehensive FR index is introduced for hybrid AC/DC networks. To determine the proposed index, power networks are modelled as a topological combination of edges and nodes. An...

Abstract
Electric power systems try to maximize resilience by various enhancement strategies as preventive and corrective actions against extreme weather events. This paper presents an operational network reconfiguration strategy during a high wind event to strengthen the resiliency of distribution networks. In the proposed resilience enhancement strategy, a bi-level optimization problem is formulated with two conflicting objectives (i) maximizing grid resilience and (ii) realize the primary objective by a minimum number of out-of-service lines (OSLs) switching operations. Furthermore, the algorithm considers the priority of loads, which is an important characteristic of modern distribution grids....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sabouhi, Yadollah (Supervisor) ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
By increasing the penetration of distributed generation (DG) technologies such as photovoltaiec, μCHP etc, power generation system is moving from a centralized network to a distributed scheme with different generation units at lower level of voltage. This trend will provide the opportunity for cosumers to make decision when and which source of energy to use, due to the owner’s objectives. Here, to investigate these aspects, we use the energy hub framework, considering different energy carrier networks, DGs and storage devices. In this thesis, we model and simulate an energy system containing three interconnected energy hubs, which serve as interface between suppliers and consummers. In an...

, Article European Journal Of Operational Research ; Vol. 205, No. 1, pp. 98-105 ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The general goal of the facility layout problem is to arrange a given number of facilities to minimize the total cost associated with the known or projected interactions between them. One of the special classes of the facility layout problem is the Single Row Facility Layout Problem (SRFLP), which consists of finding an optimal linear placement of rectangular facilities with varying dimensions on a straight line. This paper first presents and proves a theorem to find the optimal solution of a special case of SRFLP. The results obtained by this theorem prove to be very useful in reducing the computational efforts when a new algorithm based on tabu search for the SRFLP is proposed in this...

Abstract
By locating a steel shear panel on the intersection point of the X-braces, concentrically or eccentrically braced shear panel (CBFSP or EBFSP) is formed. In this paper, to perform parametric study, 1-story CBFSP and EBFSP models with span length greater or less than height are considered. Using linear static analyses, the effects of size and location of the shear panel on the lateral stiffness of the frame with respect to the moment resisting frame with the same member sections are investigated. Next, for 1- And 3-story models, maximum displacement, along with base shear, and the ratio between the dissipated energy and input energy are examined under 4 ground motion records. Behavior of the...
Assessment of Seismic Retrofit Policies for Buildings
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kashani, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as earthquake could seriously damage most buildings especially those with insufficient resistance located in urban worn-out textures. In order to reduce unpleasant consequences of an earthquake, appropriate policies need to be considered to persuade the beneficiaries to follow retrofitting standards in the process of planning, designing, and construction of buildings. These policies shall be implemented through institutions in arbitrary or obligatory forms, by encouragement or penalty mechanisms. In order to consider these policies, first of all we need to identify the beneficiaries and their particulars. By studying and considering subjects discussed in...

Despite the laws, regulations, incentives and penalties that policymakers have envisioned to prevent unprincipled and unsafe construction, evidence shows that a significant number of new buildings being built in the country are not earthquake resistant and there are many violations in design, implementation and supervision that is done by the stakeholders. To solve this problem, research has been done on the...
Development of a Multi-functional Soil Column for Studying Bioremediation and Multiphase Flow
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sadeghi, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Soil and water pollution is one of the most common types of pollution in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The development of mines and the oil and petrochemical industry on one hand and the non-compliance with environmental requirements on the other hand have caused large amounts of hydrocarbon pollutants and heavy metals to enter the environment in recent decades. Petroleum materials and heavy metals leak into the surrounding environment during drilling and extraction in oil sites and mines or during land and sea transportation, despite the measures taken to control their pollution. The conducted studies show that human industrial activities are the only cause of environmental pollution...
Developing Novel Algorithms to Simultaneous Power Regulation and Load Mitigation of Modern Variable Speed Wind Turbines
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Moradi, Hamed (Supervisor)
Abstract
The power control of horizontal axis wind turbines can affect significantly the vibration loads and fatigue life of the tower and the blades. In this thesis, we are going to consider both the power control and vibration load mitigation of the tower fore-aft vibration. For this purpose, at first, we developed a fully coupled model of the NREL 5MW turbine. This model considers the full aeroelastic behavior of the blades and tower and is validated by experiment results, comparing the time history data with the FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence ) code which is developed by NREL (National Renewable Energy Lab in the United States). In the next, to estimate EWV, a novel...
