Undamaged-to-Damaged Structural Response Mapping for Structural Health Monitoring Using Generative A dversarial Networks (GANs)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahmani, Mobina Sadat (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayyaze (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, a Cycle-Generative Adversarial Network (Cycle-GAN)-based approach is proposed to transform the dynamic response of structures from a healthy to a damaged state and vice versa, aiming to improve damage identification and reduce the need for paired data. This method enhances signal conversion accuracy, facilitating the prediction of damage presence or absence while minimizing dependency on extensive experimental data. Traditional Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods, such as mechanical sensors and numerical analyses, face limitations such as high costs, operator dependency, and the requirement for fully paired data. Deep learning algorithms, particularly those based on...

Cluster-based adaptive SVM: a latent subdomains discovery method for domain adaptation problems

    , Article Computer Vision and Image Understanding ; Volume 162 , 2017 , Pages 116-134 ; 10773142 (ISSN) Sadat Mozafari, A ; Jamzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
Machine learning algorithms often suffer from good generalization in testing domains especially when the training (source) and test (target) domains do not have similar distributions. To address this problem, several domain adaptation techniques have been proposed to improve the performance of the learning algorithms when they face accuracy degradation caused by the domain shift problem. In this paper, we focus on the non-homogeneous distributed target domains and propose a new latent subdomain discovery model to divide the target domain into subdomains while adapting them. It is expected that applying adaptation on subdomains increase the rate of detection in comparing with the situation...

    , Article 2008 AAAI Workshop, Chicago, IL, 13 July 2008 through 14 July 2008 ; Volume WS-08-10 , 2008 , Pages 173-174 Rahmani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
One of challenging problems in the domain of web services is the web service composition (i.e the task of composing web services to create new services, capable of fulfilling a need that no single service can satisfy). In real application, there will be a lot of relevant web services for a simple goal, so the search space for such a problem is huge. In this research statement, we show how by extracting some prior knowledge and using simple heuristics, search space and search time can be reduced significantly

Indoor Noise Pollution Modeling: A Case Study on Resalat Tunnel

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Mortazavi, Mandana (Author) ; Vaziri, Manouchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Noise or noise pollution, is defined as an unwanted sound, produced mostly by motor vehicles in urban areas. If the noise exceeds its limit, adverse effects on users and citizens are expected. Thus the assessment of the noise level and its comparison with allowable values is mandatory. Traffic induced noise depends upon different factors such as traffic, weather, and, sound barriers. Noise pollution study has a long history all over the world. Many studies, mostly representing the outdoor noise pollution models, have been done in recent years. This paper presents an assessment of traffic-induced noise in a heavily traveled tunnel, locally referred to as Resalat tunnel, which is located in...

The Effect of Travel Time Reliability on Morning Peak Travellers route choice in Large Metropolitan Area

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Mirjafari, Parisa (Author) ; Poorzahedy, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data collected from street networks show that travel time in urban street networks is a stochastic variable, whose range of variation increases with the congestion level. Work and school trips comprise the major part of morning peak volumes, whose common characteristic is that they need to be made on time. For this reason, these travelers are pessimistic in their route choice, and try to choose routes which are more reliable. Travel time standard deviation is one of the common measures for estimating travel time reliability that is related to properties of day-to-day travel time distribution on a particular route. Based on the empirical data collected from Tehran street network, this paper...

Using Information Beyond Text to Generate Language Embedding Vectors

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zeinab Sadat Taghavi (Author) ; Sameti, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we introduce a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) system inspired by the philosophical and psychoanalytical concept of imagination as a ``Re-construction of Experiences". Our AI system is equipped with an imagination-inspired module that bridges the gap between textual inputs and other modalities, enriching the derived information based on previously learned experiences. A unique feature of our system is its ability to formulate independent perceptions of inputs. This leads to unique interpretations of a concept that may differ from human interpretations but are equally valid, a phenomenon we term as ``Interpretable Misunderstanding". We employ large-scale models,...

Entanglement Distillation for Weakly Entangled States

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sarbishegi, Sasan (Author) ; Mirkamali, Maryam Sadat (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quantum entanglement is an essential resource in quantum information processing, such as quantum communication and quantum computing. Although entanglement is critical for practical implementations in these fields, creating and transmitting entanglement without altering the states is challenging. External noise may destroy or weaken the entanglement. Consequently, there is a need for methods to improve entanglement. Entanglement distillation is an effort to address this issue. It is a process where, probabilistically, a smaller number of strongly entangled states are created from a fixed number of noisy entangled states. This process is carried out using only local operations and classical...

Deformation and Annealing Behavior of an Austenitic Stainless Steel

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadat Alavi, Parisa (Author) ; Serajzadeh, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, non-isothermal annealing process at temperatures ranging between 400°C to 830 °C was investigated in warm and cold-rolled austenitic stainless steel 304L. First, the wide variety of austenitic to martensitic structure was produced by the multi-pass rolling process at room temperature -8 °C, 200 °C, and 280°C. The n exponent in Olson-Cohen equation was governed 2.83 after non-linear curve fitting to assess the fraction of deformation-induced martensite as a function of strain. Afterward, Abaqus/Explicit method was utilized to achieve the stored energy and plastic strains distribution through the thickness. Then, Cellular automata and Galerkin-finite element models were...

Robust optimal control for large-scale systems with state delay

    , Article Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control ; Vol. 36, Issue. 4 , June , 2014 , pp. 551-558 ; ISSN: 01423312 Rahmani, M ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
Optimal control of large-scale uncertain dynamic systems with time delays in states is considered in this paper. For this purpose, a two-level strategy is proposed to decompose the large-scale system into several interconnected subsystems at the first level. Then optimal control inputs are obtained by minimization of convex performance indices in presence of uncertainties, in the form of states and interactions feedback. The solution is achieved by bounded data uncertainty problems, where the uncertainties are only needed to be bounded and it is not required to satisfy the so-called 'matching conditions'. At the second level, a simple substitution-type interaction prediction method is used...

Dynamic behavior of pile foundations under cyclic loading in liquefiable soils

    , Article Computers and Geotechnics ; Volume 40 , 2012 , Pages 114-126 ; 0266352X (ISSN) Rahmani, A ; Pak, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, a fully coupled three-dimensional dynamic analysis is carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of pile foundations in liquefied ground. A critical state bounding surface plasticity model is used to model soil skeleton, while a fully coupled (u- P) formulation is employed to analyze soil displacements and pore water pressures. Furthermore, in this study, variation of permeability coefficient during liquefaction is taken into account; the permeability coefficient is related to excess pore water pressure ratio. Results of a centrifuge test on pile foundations are used to demonstrate the capability of the model for reliable analysis of piles under dynamic loading. Then, the...

Two-level optimal load-frequency control for multi-area power systems

    , Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Volume 53, Issue 1 , December , 2013 , Pages 540-547 ; 01420615 (ISSN) Rahmani, M ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In large-scale power systems, classical centralized control approaches may fail due to geographically distribution of information and decentralized controllers result in sub-optimal solution for load-frequency control (LFC) problems. In this paper, a two-level structure is presented to obtain optimal solution for LFC problems and also reduce the computational complexity of centralized controllers. In this approach, an interconnected multi-area power system is decomposed into several sub-systems (areas) at the first-level. Then an optimization problem in each area is solved separately, with respect to its local information and interaction signals coming from other areas. At the second-level,...

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 303-312 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Rahmani, M ; Sadati, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this study, a hierarchical optimal robust controller is presented for the power system load-frequency control problem. In this approach, the multi-area power system is first decomposed into several sub-systems (areas). Then by using a two-level control strategy, the overall optimal solution is obtained. At the first level, the optimal control of each area is obtained with respect to local information and also considering interactions coming from other areas. At the second level, by using a coordination strategy, the local controllers will converge to global solution and optimal robust controller is achieved. This approach is applicable to both single-area and multi-area interconnected...

    Abstract
Nickel-base superalloys such as René 80 are widely used in manufacturing aircraft turbine blades. They are usually coated in order to increase their wear, oxidation, erosion, and hot corrosion properties against environmental degradation. In this article, the mechanical behavior (tensile and low-cycle fatigue (LCF)) of uncoated and aluminide-coated (CODEP-B) René 80 has been studied at 871 °C and 982 °C. Experimental results show that the tensile properties of coated specimens are relatively lower than those of uncoated ones in the same conditions, but application of coating increases the LCF life of René 80 at T = 871 °C, 982 °C, R = (εmin/εmax) = 0, strain rate of 2 × 10-3 s-1, and Δεt =...

Modeling of periodic array of cut-through slits with sinusoidal surface conductivity at the interfaces of an anisotropic medium

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation ; Volume 66, Issue 10 , 2018 , Pages 5630-5633 ; 0018926X (ISSN) Rahmani, B ; Mehrany, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A periodic arrangement of 1-D slits carved in a perfect electric conductor is investigated, and an equivalent model which features sinusoidal surface conductivity on its upper and lower interfaces is derived. Therefore, and in sheer contrast to all the previous attempts that were successful in mimicking only the zeroth-order diffracted waves, it is capable of emulating both specular and nonspecular diffraction orders. The accuracy of the model is verified by the full-wave simulations. The proposed model is used to study the sharp Fano-type extraordinary transmission resonances arising in the structure. The transmission spectrum near these resonances is derived in terms of Fano resonance...

Some clarifications on the relation between bohmian quantum potential and mach’s principle

    , Article International Journal of Theoretical Physics ; Volume 56, Issue 10 , 2017 , Pages 3096-3107 ; 00207748 (ISSN) Rahmani, F ; Golshani, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Mach’s principle asserts that the inertial mass of a body is related to the distribution of other distant bodies. This means that in the absence of other bodies, a single body has no mass. In this case, talking about motion is not possible, because the detection of motion is possible only relative to other bodies. But in physics we are faced with situations that are not fully Machian. As in the case of general theory of relativity where geodesics exist in the absence of any matter, the motion has meaning. Another example which is the main topic of our discussion, refers to Bohmian quantum mechanics, where the inertial mass of a single particle does not vanish, but is modified. We can call...

Some clarifications about the bohmian geodesic deviation equation and raychaudhuri's equation

    Abstract
One of the important and famous topics in general theory of relativity and gravitation is the problem of geodesic deviation and its related singularity theorems. An interesting subject is the investigation of these concepts when quantum effects are considered. Since the definition of trajectory is not possible in the framework of standard quantum mechanics (SQM), we investigate the problem of geodesic equation and its related topics in the framework of Bohmian quantum mechanics in which the definition of trajectory is possible. We do this in a fixed background and we do not consider the backreaction effects of matter on the space-time metric. © 2018 World Scientific Publishing Company

    Abstract
Ni-base superalloy René 80 is widely used in manufacturing aircraft turbine blades. The service temperature of this alloy is in the range of 760-982 °C. Although this alloy possesses suitable mechanical, oxidation and hot corrosion properties, it is coated in order to increase its wear, oxidation, erosion and hot corrosion properties against harmful environmental service conditions. In this paper the influence of applying diffusion coating (CODEP-B) on the tensile properties of René 80 has been studied in the temperature range of 22-982 °C. Experimental results show that the tensile properties of the coated specimens are relatively lower than that of uncoated ones in the same conditions. But...
