    Abstract
Frequency control during power system restoration has not been strongly addressed. Operators are often concerned with the offline sizing of load and generation steps, but, nowadays, the introduction of Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS) makes it possible to monitor the stability of power system online. The constraints of WAMS operation result in some changes in power system frequency control. This paper proposes a novel methodology for frequency control and monitoring during the early steps of power system restoration based on WAMS. Detailed load modeling is achieved based on the static load modeling approach. Power generators' modeling is also accomplished utilizing the single machine...

    Abstract
The first control action in power system restoration concerns the generation restart. In the initial phase of restoration, operators are often concerned with load pickup problems. One of the important problems during load pickup is keeping frequency response in allowable range. The aim of this paper is to determine the best sequence of load pickup by hydro and steam units during power system restoration based on frequency response of prime movers. Hydro power plants and combustion turbine units have the capability of black start operation and can be used for early stages of power system restoration. This paper considers hydro power plants for evaluating the stability and frequency response...

    Abstract
The introduction of Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS) made it possible to monitor the stability online. This thesis presents a method for the optimal restoration planning based on Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS). In fact, the practical use of WAMS at the early stages of restoration provides precise determination of generators loading steps. Moreover, unification of phase angle references at different islands and presentation of tie line energizing priority list are significant benefits of WAMS at the last stages of restoration. The presented method uses observability analysis and Power Transfer Distribution Factor (PTDF) concept. The PTDF concept is applied to decrease the...

    Abstract
Abstract- Benefits of PSS application for electromechanical oscillations damping is clarified. A major difficulty of PSS application is its tuning such that its damping characteristics do not fall into overcompensation facing continuously changing power systems. This paper presents an approach for wide area monitoring and control based PSS tuning. The presented approach originated from adaptive tuning based on real time power system state estimation. © 2008 IEEE

Transmission capability improvement using wide area monitoring and control

    Abstract
Operation of transmission lines are usually limited by stability limits rather than thermal capacity limits. Thermal limit of transmission lines is a physical limitation of their components and not related with the overall power system characteristics, but stability limits are strictly related with power system characteristics. This paper presents an approach for increasing stability limits using PSS. © 2008 IEEE

    Abstract
Cable-driven parallel robots have several outstanding characteristics that make them unique in many robotic applications. Since cables can only pull, one of the most important issues associated with these robots is obtaining their workspace. In this paper a spatial translational cable-driven robot with active/passive cables is considered and its workspace is investigated from several points of views. First the moment resisting capability of the robot is discussed and the effects of some robot's parameters on the workspace are studied. Then, both force-feasibility and moment-resisting capability of the robot are considered to find the region where the end-effector may exert the required...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber, Omid (Author) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cable-driven robots are referred to as parallel robots actuated with cables. In fact,in such robots rigid links are replaced by cables, which may be extended to desired lengths without making mechanism much heavy. This robot possesses a number of unique properties that makes it suitable for many industrial applications. The main factor which makes cable robots analysis different from other parallel robots is the incapability of cables to push objects. Hence, obtaining the workspace of a cable robot is one of the most important subjects associated with this type of robot. The goal of this thesis is to design a spatial translational cable driven robot, which may be used for object handling. For...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber, Hossein (Author) ; Ehsan , Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Uncertain fuel prices and also global climate changes are accompanied by some state initiatives such as renewable portfolio standards (RPS). This has caused a fast growth in the amount of renewable energy installed worldwide especially wind energy over last decades. However, the intrinsic characteristics of wind farms output power, i.e. intermittency and volatility of wind speed along with being non-dispatchable in output generation of wind turbine raises many new technical and financial challenges for power system operators and planners. Up to these issues, large level of wind power penetration causes a growing concern in wind energy curtailment issue which the wind farm’s operator may be...

    Abstract
During power system restoration, it is necessary to check the phase angle between two buses before closing circuit breakers to connect a line between them. A novel approach for reducing large standing phase angle (SPA) based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) is presented in this paper. The proposed approach starts with a state estimation on Wide Area Monitoring System (WAMS) data measurements and considering power system operation and angular stability constraints, seeks an optimal control action scenario for reducing SPA. Since these constraints are evaluated based on WAMS data, the presented approach is considerably high speed and accurate. As an optimization problem, objective function of the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber, Mostafa (Author) ; Khaloo, Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent decades the use of FRP materials for strengthening structures has been developed extensively, thanks to their high strength, sufficient stiffness, high durablity, and ease of use. A great deal of research has been conducted on strengthening reinforced concrete beams and columns with FRP composites. By contrast, not many researches are performed on slabs, especially two-way slabs. In these few researches, the loading and boundary conditions are limited to simplest ones. Therefore, in this thesis, the focus of attention is on strengthening reinforced concrete slabs under various loads and boundary conditions using FRP composites.
In this thesis, first, FRP composites and their...

    Combinatorial Optimization with Reinforcement Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Amir (Author) ; Saleh Kaleybar, Saber (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the key subjects in the area of mathematical optimization is a class of problems known as combinatorial optimization. We can find the optimal solution of continuous optimization problems feasible in time. But, in combinatorial optimization, we aim to obtain the optimal solution of the problem over a finite set. These problems are NP-hard and no polynomial-time solution has been proposed for this class of problems so far. Thus, in practical scenarios, we often use heuristic methods for solving NP-hard problems. There are lots of heuristic methods and choosing the best one in different situations might be challenging. In recent years, with the advances in deep neural networks,...

Data Sharing Aware Scheduling for Reducing Memory Accesses in GPGPUs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber Latibari, Banafsheh (Author) ; Hesabi, Shahin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Access to global memory is one of the bottlenecks in performance and energy in GPUs. Graphical processors uses multi-thread in streaming multiprocessors to reduce memory access latency. However, due to the high number of concurrent memory requests, the memory bandwidth of low level memorties and the interconnection network are quickly saturated. Recent research suggests that adjacent thread blocks share a significant amount of data blocks. If the adjacent thread blocks are assigned to specific streaming multiprocessor, shared data block can be rused by these thread blocks. However the thread block scheduler assigns adjacent thread blocks to different streaming multiprocessors that increase...

    Abstract
Building new transmission lines has grown increasingly difficult in recent years due to ever-increasing environmental concerns and rising construction costs. An alternative would involve investing in distributed energy resources (DERs) which can reduce the need for new transmission lines by reducing the load. This study presents a new stochastic multi-objective planning model for DERs as a replacement for transmission network reinforcement. The proposed model aims to minimize the investment costs of DERs and the congestion costs of transmission networks while maximizing the absorption of private investments. The uncertainties in the future electric loads and generators' offer prices are...

    Abstract
This paper presents a framework for expansion planning studies of distributed energy storage systems (DESSs) in high wind penetrated power systems. The main objective is to find optimal location and capacity of DESSs in the viewpoint of independent system operator (ISO) while ensuring the maximum usage of wind farms output generation. Three different criteria are introduced for expansion planning studies. Minimizing wind curtailment cost together with transmission congestion cost are considered to properly deal with the issues associated with the curtailment of wind energy and constraints of transmission network. Furthermore, the minimum normalized profit for all DESSs' owners needs to be...

    Abstract
Object handling is one of the most important applications of cable-suspended robots, which can be obtained by use of a gripper as its end-effector. In this paper, a novel cable-driven multi-finger gripper assembled on a cable-suspended robot has been presented. Using lock/unlock mechanisms, the under-actuated finger mechanism has been designed to have a human like motion. A cable-suspended robot structure with 3 position degrees of freedom is also proposed by employing active/passive cables in such a way that makes it capable of resisting external moments, while it may be simplified to a spatial point-mass cable robot during positioning operation. Furthermore, the robot workspace has been...

Application of Graph Theory and Matrices of Relations in Modeling Complex Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber Kivaj, Ali (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Design of complex systems requires different challenges to be met simultaneously. Yet the current methods lack a sound theoretic framework and thus designers normally rely on heuristic or empirical methods; based on available experiences. Such approaches to the system design entail both technical and business risks and subsequently increase the probability of long-term problems. In this research, along with the theoretical framework of the systems design concepts, we discuss number of important models. The main concentration of the work, however, is to; somehow, correlate Axiomatic Design Matrix (ADM) with Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Here we exploit mathematical model based on sets and by...

    Abstract
The rapid proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs), if not properly integrated, has the potential to impact the secure and economic operation of distribution systems. To tackle this challenge, the system operators and planners have two primary options: 1) expanding system capacity and 2) implementing charging management programs. In this article, we consider an exclusive dc feeder for supplying multiple EV charging stations, connected to the main grid via the grid-tie converter. In addition, a two-stage coordination algorithm is proposed in which the EV charging stations' daily quotas from the grid-tie converter capacity and their day-ahead scheduling plans are determined in the first stage....
