Reliability Evaluation of Damaged Structures Using First Order Reliability Method (FORM)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Delbariani Nezhad, Ali (Author) ; Adib Nazari, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years, one of the important and challenging issues that has drawn many engineers’ attention is the system reliability. Generally, the possibility of the system’s satisfactory performance under specified operating conditions, for a given period of time, is defined as the System Reliability. Analytical and Simulation methods are two main reliability techniques. In the Analytical technique, mathematical models with some simplification are applied, whereas the Simulation technique utilizes significant number of experiments which are extremely costly and time-consuming. In spite of carrying out analytical methods for proving results, simulation is carried out in different analyses...

Computational modeling of strong and weak discontinuities using the extended finite element method

    , Article Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 578-585 ; 15376494 (ISSN) Moradi, A ; Adib Nazari, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, the extended finite element method is employed to solve problems, including weak and strong discontinuities. To this end, a level set framework is used to represent the discontinuities location, and the Heaviside and Branch function are included in the standard finite element method. The case of two arbitrary curved cracks is solved numerically and stress intensity factor (SIF) values at the crack tips are calculated based on the evaluation of the crack tip opening displacement. Afterwards, J-integral methodology is adopted to evaluate the SIFs for isotropic and anisotropic bi-material interface crack problems. Numerical results are verified with those presented in the...

Enhanced recovery and recycling of catalyst by post-impregnation of γ-Al2O3 with 12-tungstophosphoric acid for esterification reaction

    , Article Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering ; Volume 96, Issue 5 , 2018 , Pages 1176-1184 ; 00084034 (ISSN) Nazari, P ; Rahman Setayesh, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
12-tungstophosphoric acid, polyoxometalate with Keggin structure, and γ-Al2O3 were synthesized. Loading of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW) on γ-Al2O3 was performed by the post-impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, BET, and DRS techniques. According to the pertinent observation, using the post-impregnation method promises the stability of polyoxometalate Keggin structure after loading on γ-Al2O3 support. The stability of 20 %HPW/Al2O3 was also confirmed by a leaching test. Textural characterization demonstrates that HPW on the γ-Al2O3 had a much larger surface area as compared with the pure HPW. The 20 %HPW/Al2O3 exhibited roughly high activity toward an...

A constructive genetic algorithm for LBP in face recognition

    , Article 3rd International Conference on Pattern Analysis and Image Analysis, IPRIA 2017, 19 April 2017 through 20 April 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 182-188 ; 9781509064540 (ISBN) Nazari, A ; Shouraki, S. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
LBP coefficients are essential and determine the priority of gray differences. The objectives of this paper are to reveal this and propose a method for finding an optimal priority through the genetic algorithm. On the other hand, the genetic operators such as initialization and cross-over operators, generate invalid coefficients, defective chromosomes. This paper also recommends a rectifying method for correcting defective chromosomes. Results on the FERET and Extended Yale B datasets indicate that the proposed method has markedly higher recognition rates than LBP. © 2017 IEEE

    Abstract
The nanocomposite of zero-valent iron and delafossite CuFeO2 supported on reduced graphene oxide was synthesized for the first time to evaluate its performance as the heterogeneous catalyst toward electro-Fenton (EF) removal of catechol. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared, scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) were used to characterize the nanocomposite. It was found that the rhombohedral structure of CuFeO2 remained stable during the nanocomposite preparation. The BET surface area of the nanocomposite increased about 102 times in comparison with bare CuFeO2. The influence of the operating parameters was investigated. The optimum operating conditions were...

Fuzzy simple additive weighting method by preference ratio

    , Article Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing ; Volume 11, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 235-244 ; 10798587 (ISSN) Modarres, M ; Sadi Nezhad, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Although simple additive weighting method (SAW) is the most popular approach for classical multiple attribute decision making (MADM), it is not practical any more if information is fuzzy. The existing methods of Fuzzy Simple Additive Weighting method (FSAW) apply defuzzification which distorts fuzzy numbers. Furthermore, most of the methods usually require lengthy and laborious manipulations. In this paper, we develop a new a fuzzy simple additive weighting method for multiple attribute decision making problems. To avoid defuzzification round off errors caused by multiplication or other arithmetic manipulations, fuzzy numbers are ranked prior to any fuzzy arithmetic in this method. The...

Ranking fuzzy numbers by preference ratio

    , Article Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Amsterdam ; Volume 118, Issue 3 , 2001 , Pages 429-436 ; 01650114 (ISSN) Modarres, M ; Sadi Nezhad, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We propose a ranking method for fuzzy numbers. In this method a preference function is defined by which fuzzy numbers are measured point by point and at each point the most preferred number is identified. Then, these numbers are ranked on the basis of their preference ratio. Therefore, fuzzy numbers are compared relatively and not necessarily one is preferred absolutely over the others. This method is especially designed to evaluate alternatives in multi criteria or multi-attribute decision making. The method is intuitive and can be used to discriminate between numbers easily. The method is specially tailored for triangular fuzzy numbers (TFN) and an algorithm is presented to determine the...

A new acceptance sampling policy based on number of successive conforming items

    , Article Communications in Statistics - Theory and Methods ; Volume 42, Issue 8 , Apr , 2013 , Pages 1542-1552 ; 03610926 (ISSN) Nezhad, M. S. F ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In an acceptance-sampling plan, where items of an incoming batch of products are inspected one by one, if the number of conforming items between successive non conforming items falls below a lower control threshold, the batch is rejected. If it falls above an upper control threshold, the batch is accepted, and if it lies within the thresholds then the process of inspecting the items continues. The purpose of this article is to develop an optimization model to determine the optimum values of the thresholds such that constraints on the probability of Type I and Type II errors are satisfied. This article starts by developing a Markovian model to derive the expected total cost of the inspection...

A Max-EWMA approach to monitor and diagnose faults of multivariate quality control processes

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 68, Issue 9-12 , 2013 , Pages 2283-2294 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Nezhad, M. S. F ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A new approach is developed in this paper to detect general mean shifts of multivariate quality control systems and to determine the quality characteristic(s) responsible for the shift. This approach takes advantage of both a decomposition method and an EWMA-based control statistics that are employed for multivariate normal distributions. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, simulation studies are provided to estimate the in- and out-of-control average run lengths under different mean and variance shift scenarios. Simulation experiments are also given to compare the performances of the proposed procedure with the ones of the well-known MEWMA and MCUSUM methods....

A heuristic threshold policy for fault detection and diagnosis in multivariate statistical quality control environments

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 67, Issue 5-8 , July , 2013 , Pages 1231-1243 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Nezhad, M. S. F ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, a heuristic threshold policy is developed to detect and classify the states of a multivariate quality control system. In this approach, a probability measure called belief is first assigned to the quality characteristics and then the posterior belief of out-of-control characteristics is updated by taking new observations and using a Bayesian rule. If the posterior belief is more than a decision threshold, called minimum acceptable belief determined using a heuristic threshold policy, then the corresponding quality characteristic is classified out-of-control. Besides using a different approach, the main difference between the current research and previous works is that the...

Seismic Vulnerability Control of Steel Moment–Resisting Frames Using Optimum Friction Tuned Mass Damper

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology - Transactions of Civil Engineering ; 2024 ; 22286160 (ISSN) Khatibinia, M ; Bijari, S ; Nezhad, F. S. M ; Gharehbaghi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Friction tuned mass damper (FTMD) as one of the variety passive devices is a combination of the traditional TMD system with dry friction damping. This study presents the seismic vulnerability control of a 10-story steel moment–resisting frames (SMRFs) equipped with an optimized FTMD system. The optimized FTMD system placed in the roof story of the SMRF is first found through minimizing the maximum value of the Park–Ang damage index of stories averaged over seven scaled earthquake excitations. Further, the seismic damage induced by the scaled earthquake excitations is uniformly distributed throughout the height of the SMRF. Then, the seismic assessment of the SMRF with the optimized FTMD is...

    Abstract
The response of large-scale building structures can be actively reduced using an appropriate control algorithm and a number of actuators and sensors located within the building. This paper presents a decentralized control approach for controlling the response of tall buildings. The proposed method aims to divide the structural model into several substructures, each one performing on its own controller algorithm. This approach has already been used in controlling large-scale systems such as power transmission systems and space structures. An instantaneous optimal control scheme is used as the control algorithm with different control feedbacks such as velocity feedback alone and displacement...

Phase plane characteristics of marginally stable fractional order systems

    Abstract
When an integer order linear time invariant system possesses unrepeated pure imaginary poles it can generate oscillatory response which is represented by invariant closed contours in the phase plane. In linear time invariant fractional order systems with the same property, due to their special characteristics, this behavior will be more complicated and the contours would not be invariant. In this paper we will investigate the behavior of fractional order systems under such conditions
