Pair Interaction Between Colloidal PartIcles in Nematic Liquid Crystal: A Finite Element Study
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Structure of colloidal particles in anisotropic solvent with long-range orientational ordering, such as nematic liquid crystals, has attracted great attention in science and technology. The nematic director is distorted from its uniform orientation in the bulk due to anchoring on the surface of the colloidal particles. These elastic distortions create topological defects around the particles and induce long and short range anisotropic interactions between the particles. Depending on the anchoring type and the colloidal geometry, the particle-defect can induce a long-range dipolar-dipolar, quadrupolar-quadrupolar and/or dipolar-quadrupolar potential.Experimentally, the colloidal interactions...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Akbarzadeh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this research, aluminium sandwich structure was manufactured by accumulative roll bonding (ARB). In this method, aluminum AA5083 strip was used as the matrix and titanium hydride was selected as the foaming agent powder. Due to the use of particle foaming agent in the first pass, reduction, preheat temperature, rolling speed and the percentage of powder particles parameters were examined. Finally, the 66% reduction, 400 °C preheat temperature and 25 rpm rolling speed, were considered as the optimal values. At the next stage of this process 50% reduction was applied at each pass and this process was repeated up to five passes. After ward, in order to create a sandwich structure, aluminum...
Control Design for Nonlinear Stochastic Processes in the Presence of Input Constraint
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the presence of a random variable in the process dynamics or due to the presence of measurement noise, many processes have stochastic in nature. Behaviors of these processes are different from the deterministic processes and therefore their controllers are also different. The aim of this research is to design adaptive controller for stochastic processes with a non-strict feedback structure and in the presence of input constraints. Also, the considered system has other limitations such as the unmeasured states, actuator failure, unknown dynamics and fixed time stability is desired. The input limitation can be caused by the limitation of the final control element, because the input...

Predicting Stability in Low Depth Milling
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Movahhedy, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Chatter in milling causes problems like damage to the device, losing precision or sleekness, increase in cannibalization, damage to the spindle, higher level of noise, and problem in thin objects. Current theories in regenerative chatter in filing, has a high relation with a work time (ρ~1), but in less deep filing (ρ≪1), these theories have errors (ρ is time per rotation period). Some of the usages of less deep filing are: 1- surfaces that are hard to file 2- creating curve surfaces 3- sleeking surfaces.Formulating these chatters and solving them using nonlinear methods help using the correct filing depth to reduce them. Goal of this project is to solve chatter equations in low depth filing...

Effect of the Geometry of Colloidal Particles on Nematic Liquid Crystals
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ejtehadi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Mozaffari, Mohammad Reza (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
A liquid crystal is a state of matter composed of highly anisotropic building blocks. When liquid crystals are exposed to surfaces with given shapes and anchoring conditions, the orientation of their molecules gets spatially disordered and topological defects may form in the system. The interplay between liquid crystals and the geometry and topology of the colloidal particles has motivated extensive recent studies. In this thesis, we present the numerical modeling results for two faceted colloidal particles in a thermotropic nematic liquid crystal. To obtain the equilibrium nematic field with a finiteelement method, we numerically minimize the free energy of the system that based on the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mozaffari, Ali Asghar (Supervisor) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
The number of operating vehicles has increased in recent years and as a result global pollutants have widely spread. Therefore, the regulations on the vehicle exhaust emissions have become much stricter. For an automobile to pass the emission tests successfully an accurate calibration of the ECU tables is needed, especially the tables which have direct impact on the amount of pollutant emissions. To achieve the optimum performance of the catalyst existing in the exhaust system of the engine, the fuel/air ratio must have nearly stoichiometric value. The present research studies the ECU strategies for implementing this objective by appropriate management and control of catalyst and oxygen...

Abstract
Dissemination of an analyte under the laminar flows plays a major role in measuring and assessment of biological fluids such as sample preparation in the context of microfluidic systems. Due to the development of manufacturing technology in the Lab-on-a-chip devices, the production of rectangular microchannels with finite aspect ratios and micron and submicron sizes has been provided by which the effect of electrokinetic phenomena on concentration distribution will be magnified in these systems. On the other hand, these biofluids are viscoelastic and show extraordinary flow behaviors, not existing in Newtonian fluids and adopting appropriate constitutive equations these exotic flow behaviors...

Abstract
The phase formation and the variation of the normal phonon frequencies of high temperature superconductors YBa2Cu3O7-δ and GdBa2Cu3O7-δ upon doping Tb and Ce for Y and Gd, respectively, have been investigated using XRD and Raman spectroscopy measurements. It is found that the increase of doping content causes the formation of impurity phases that can be detected in the XRD and Raman spectra, and results in the suppression of superconductivity. Moreover, analysis of the Raman peaks reveals that substitutions of Tb and Ce for Y and Gd in the parent structure are restricted to low concentrations in favor of impurity island formation. © 2008
Reliability Enhancement of SSD-based Storage Systems Using Erasure Codes
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Miremadi, Ghasem (Supervisor)
Abstract
The use of flash-based Solid State Disks (SSDs) has been increased in the past decades because of their high performance and low power consumption. As SSDs have no moving mechanical parts, they are more reliable than HDDs. SSDs have specific errors, such as read, program, and erase disturbs, data retention, and endurance. It is so common in storage systems to apply an array of disks called Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) together for the aim of reliability and performance. Erasure codes are one of the main methods applied in storage systems for the aim of reliability. Erasure codes increase the reliability of storage systems by protecting them against disk failures and sector...

Spin dynamics characterization in magnetic dots
, Article Physica B: Condensed Matter ; Volume 399, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 81-93 ; 09214526 (ISSN) ; Esfarjani, K ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The spin structure in a magnetic dot is studied as a function of the exchange coupling strength and dot size within the semiclassical approximation on a discrete lattice. As the exchange coupling is decreased or the size is increased, the ground state undergoes a phase change from a homogeneous single-domain ferromagnet (HSDF) to a spin vortex. The line separating these two phases has been calculated numerically for small system sizes. The dipolar interaction has been fully included in our calculations. Magnon frequencies in such a dot have also been calculated in both phases by the linearized equation of motion method. These results have also been reproduced from the Fourier transform of...
