Impact of penalty-reward mechanism on the performance of electric distribution systems and regulator budget

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Vol. 4, issue. 7 , 2010 , p. 770-779 ; ISSN: 17518687 Mohammadnezhad-Shourkaei, H ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
As a part of the ongoing debate about competition in the electricity industry, regulators are increasingly considering performance-based regulation (PBR) as an alternative to improve the service quality. The fundamental principle behind PBR is that good performance should lead to higher profits, and poor performance should result in lower profits. A penalty-reward structure (PRS) in a PBR mechanism can enhance utility performance to align utility interests with customer's interests. During the implementation of PBR, regulators should spend or receive money to reward good performed utilities or penalised poor performed utilities, respectively. A technique is proposed, in this study, to not...

    Abstract
This study proposes an approach for improving service reliability in the distribution network based on establishing competition among electric distribution utilities. The idea behind this approach is to categorise the utilities and compare the performance of utilities located in one cluster with the other members of the same cluster. The reward/penalty mechanism (RPM) as a quality regulating instrument is designed for each cluster and used to penalise the utilities with a performance worse than the benchmark and to reward them for providing a performance better than the benchmark. Based on the RPM, utilities located in one cluster compete to make more profit by serving customers in better...

Design of Incentive Scheme for Reliability Improvement in Electricity Distribution Networks

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Mohammadnezhad Shourkaei, Hossein (Author) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The regulation is necessary for the electric distribution networks as a natural monopoly. Regulators have been applied the Performance Based Regulation (PBR) for the control of price. The common model of PBR is price cap. Price cap creates sufficient incentive for cost efficiency. However, it decreases the service quality in distribution systems. The aim of this thesis is to design a comprehensive model for improvement of service reliability in the presence of PBR. An incentive model is developed using reward-penalty theory and yardstick theory. Reward-penalty theory is a financial approach that rewards the utility with good reliability and penalizes the utility with poor reliability. The...

Incorporating service quality regulation in distribution system maintenance strategy

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 4 , 2011 , p. 2495-2504 ; ISSN: 08858977 Mohammadnezhad-Shourkaei, H ; Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The concerns of regulatory authority for the cost efficiency and service quality of distribution utilities has led them to implement monetary schemes, such as penalty/reward mechanism (PRM). PRM provides explicit financial incentives for distribution system operators (DSO) to maintain or improve their efficiency and quality of service. Although the effectiveness of the PRM is proven, analytical tools that can handle the complex decision-making process faced by decision makers to respond to PRM are scarce. This paper presents an approach for distribution system maintenance management in the presence of the PRM. The proposed approach tailors the maintenance plans by taking into account the...

    Abstract
In this article, a high-accuracy hybrid approach for short-term wind power forecasting is proposed using historical data of wind farm and Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data. The power forecasting is carried out in three stages: wind direction forecasting, wind speed forecasting, and wind power forecasting. In all three phases, the same hybrid method is used, and the only difference is in the input data set. The main steps of the proposed method are constituted of outlier detection, decomposition of time series using wavelet transform, effective feature selection and prediction of each time series decomposed using Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network. The combination of automatic...

Reliability incentive regulation based on reward-penalty mechanism using distribution feeders clustering

    , Article International Transactions on Electrical Energy Systems ; Volume 31, Issue 8 , 2021 ; 20507038 (ISSN) Khonakdar Tarsi, I ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Ehsan, M ; Mohammadnezhad Shourkaei, H ; Jooshaki, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2021
    Abstract
This paper proposes an approach to enhance the reliability regulation based on the relative performance. In the proposed approach, the distribution system feeders are clustered based on the parameters, which cannot be controlled by distribution companies. Afterward, a reliability incentive regulation is applied to each cluster so that the performance of each feeder is compared to its counterparts in the same cluster. The quality regulation is designed based on the reward-penalty mechanism, which penalizes feeders whose performance is worse than a benchmark and rewards those providing a performance higher than the benchmark. Then, the reward and penalty associated to the electric distribution...

    Abstract
Heavy metals belong to a group of lethal environmental pollutants. Ongoing efforts targeted at safeguarding public health have led to considerable attention being focused on methods that allow efficient extraction of these toxic substances. Polymer nanocomposites (PNCs) with their special characteristics are a class of adsorbents that demonstrate high potential for use in heavy metal extraction. As this process of removal is predominantly governed by adsorption, various parameters in PNCs’ chemical structure, as well as the metal solutions, can have a significant effect on the adsorption process. Herein, this review undertakes a survey of recently developed PNCs and their metal adsorption...

Effects of density currents on sedimentation in reservoirs

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 14, Issue 5 , 2007 , Pages 395-404 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mohammadnezhad, B. A ; Shamsai, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The development of density or turbidity currents causes serious problems for environmental hydraulics in reservoirs. The stream entered to a reservoir can carry sediments, nutrients and chemicals as density or turbidity currents. The fate of sediment and other substances transported by the current depends on the characteristics of the turbidity current itself, i.e. the velocity of fluid, the amount of mixing with reservoir water and the rates of sediment deposition and resuspension. These are important factors for water quality in reservoirs. A two-dimensional, depth-averaged, finite-volume numerical model is developed to study density currents, driven by non-cohesive sediments. The model...

Mitigating seismic response in liquid storage tanks through meta-foundations

    , Article Innovative Infrastructure Solutions ; Volume 9, Issue 8 , 2024 ; 23644176 (ISSN) Mohammadnezhad, H ; Seyedsharifi, S. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2024
    Abstract
In civil engineering meta-material-inspired periodic foundations are used to improve structure longevity and stability. This paper presents a study focusing on the seismic response of a liquid storage tank supported by a meta-foundation, featuring periodically repeated layers of concrete and rubber. The research starts with a parametric study to determine practical height values for layers in the meta-foundation. This study enhanced meta-foundations by substituting uniform layers with rubber blocks, leading to a better ability to widen the Width of First Attenuation Zone (WFAZ) and reduce the Lower Bound of the First Attenuation Zone (LBFAZ) for wave mitigation. In this unique seismic...

Thermal Storage Modeling of One Building with and Without Phase Change Materials

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Shourkaei, Milad (Author) ; Farhadi, Fathollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Phase change materials have been of great interest due to their ability to save and restore energy in low temperature ranges. PCM can save and release energy in a constant temperature which leads to save in energy. These materials have been widely used in solar cells, storage tanks, human body and buildings. Applications of PCMs have been discussed in the last chapter of this thesis. To study the effect of PCM, a room with bricks, chalk, insulator and also PCM is assumed. Abovementioned room in summer and winter of Tehran with south-north and west-east walls has been simulated in COMSOL. Effects of air’s convection in the room and brick’s holes have been investigated in simulation and...

Domain reduction method for seismic analysis of dam-foundation-fault system

    Abstract
Numerical simulation of dam-foundation-fault system, considering the earthquake source, propagation path, and local site effects, was carried out for realistic and reasonable seismic safety analysis of concrete dams. The Domain Reduction Method (DRM) was used for seismic analysis of Dam-Foundation-Fault (DFF) system, in which a modular two-step methodology for reducing the computational costs in large domain analysis was introduced. In this method, seismic excitation is directly applied to the computational domain such that assigning artificial boundary to the finite element models is more comfortable. In order to verify the implementation of the DRM in Finite Element Method (FEM), a simple...

    Abstract
One of the main concerns in using commercial software for finite element analyses of dam-foundation-reservoir systems is that the simplifying assumptions of the massless foundation are unreliable. In this study, an appropriate direct finite element method is introduced for simulating the mass, radiation damping and wave propagation effect in foundations of dam-foundation-reservoir systems using commercial software ABAQUS. The free-field boundary condition is used for modeling the semi-infinite foundation and radiation damping, which is not a built-in boundary condition in most of the available commercial software for finite element analysis of structures such as ANSYS or ABAQUS and thus...

    Abstract
Concrete dams are one of the most important infrastructures in every country and the seismic safety assessment of them is a major task in dam engineering field. Dam–foundation–reservoir system analysis is a complex interaction problem because this system consists of three domains with different behaviors. For accurate analysis of this system, some important factors should be considered such as foundation mass and earthquake input mechanism. In this paper, the effect of foundation mass and earthquake input mechanism on seismic response of concrete gravity dam is investigated. For this purpose, two different methods are introduced for modeling of massed semi-infinite foundation in finite...
