, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moeini Rizi, Mansoure (Author) ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Semiconductor nanocrystals act as a good luminescent layer in new coming electroluminescence devices. Research on luminescent devices based on nanocrystals such as silicon nanoparticles, has been progressed over the last decades. In this research, silicon nanoparticles have been synthesized from porous silicon layer that was created through an electrochemical process. The effective luminescent parameters like electrolyte contents, current density and reaction time have been investigated. The maximum luminescence has been captured when the current density and reaction time were adjusted at 30 and 20 min, respectively. In addition, volume ratio Ethanol:HF 14:8 was another modified...

    Abstract
Microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of a friction stir welded cast aluminum bronze (Cu-9Al-1Fe), produced by a sand casting method, have been investigated at tool rotation of 850-1500 rpm and traverse speed of 50-100 mm/min. Refinement of the primary coarse cast microstructure in the base metal was seen after friction stir welding. Microstructure of the stir zone was characterized in four distinct areas of non-isometric fine grains while a significant grain growth was noticed in some of the areas. Conditions of grain growth are defined with high heat input intensity and low heat transfer capability. The grain size was observed to decrease after FSW, resulting in a...

A Study of the Conflict between Scientific Realism and Anti-Realism from the Perspective of Evolutionary Epistemology or Evolutionary empiricism

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jorkesh Rizi, Behzad (Author) ; Akbari, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
We know that Science has been one of the most influential cultural revolutions in recent centuries, and that, due to its remarkable successes and achievements, it has rapidly spread across many societies and cultures. Scientific theories have attracted the attention of many thinkers, but among these theories, Darwin's theory of evolution has attracted more attention in that it also claims to explain the origin of humans. One outcome of this theory is that man, and consequently all his attributes, including his cognitive powers, language, and culture (which are unique among the attributes of other species), came into being through a process of evolution and natural selection. But can the...

    Abstract
Most sulfide oxidizing bioreactors are based on pure cultures or artificial mixes of microorganisms with strict requirements for growth, which make the system unstable and do not guarantee their long term performance. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop a natural mix of chemotrophic bacteria that may be applied anaerobically for the treatment of sour gas. Activated sludge from local municipal wastewater treatment plant that was maintained in endogenous anaerobic conditions for one year was used in this study. Total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile suspended solids (VSS) of the sludge was 22 gl-1 and 14.3 gl-1, respectively. A glass culture vessel had a volume of 0.65 L was used...

    Abstract
Building envelope is the sole interface with outdoors that can lie in the level of integrating control strategies to enhance occupant’s comfort and building performance. However, in the literature, there is still a lack of multi-purpose control strategies which can balance diverse and antagonistic aspects of occupant comfort while keeping the building energy consumption under control. Therefore, this research proposed an integrated simulation-based workflow using EnergyPlus and Python-based package, OpyPlus, to adjust a roller shade for single occupied office space in a hot and arid climate. The developed system aims to improve both occupant’s visual and thermal comfort considering daylight...

    Abstract
A systematic change of HZSM-5 (HZ5) as a catalyst of the methanol to aromatics (MTA) reaction was undertaken by employing a fixed-bed tubular-type reactor under ambient pressure, applying a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 2 h-1 at 375 °C, as the first report on the application of low-Si/Al-ratio alkaline-[Mo,Na]-HZSM-5 in the MTA process. To characterize the surface and textural properties of the catalysts, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), pyridine-infrared spectroscopy (Py-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) methods were employed. Gas chromatography (GC) and...

    Silver cubes

    , Article Graphs and Combinatorics ; Volume 24, Issue 5 , 2008 , Pages 429-442 ; 09110119 (ISSN) Ghebleh, M ; Goddyn, L.A ; Mahmoodian, E. S ; Verdian Rizi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
An n × n matrix A is said to be silver if, for i = 1,2,...,n, each symbol in {1,2,...,2n - 1} appears either in the ith row or the ith column of A. The 38th International Mathematical Olympiad asked whether a silver matrix exists with n = 1997. More generally, a silver cube is a triple (K n d , I, c) where I is a maximum independent set in a Cartesian power of the complete graph K n , and c : V(K n d)→ {1,2,...,d(n-1)+1} is a vertex colouring where, for ν ∈ I, the closed neighbourhood N[ν] sees every colour. Silver cubes are related to codes, dominating sets, and those with n a prime power are also related to finite geometry. We present here algebraic constructions, small examples, and a...

, Article Proceedings of the 30th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, EMBS'08 - "Personalized Healthcare through Technology", 20 August 2008 through 25 August 2008, Vancouver, BC ; 2008 , Pages 4011-4014 ; 9781424418152 (ISBN) Yousefi Rizi, F ; Ahmadian, A. R ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Alirezaie, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The main problem with airway segmentation methods which significantly influences their accuracy is leakage into the extra-luminal regions due to thinness of the airway wall during the process of segmentation. This phenomenon potentially makes large regions of lungparenchyma to be wrongly identified as airways. A solution to this problem in the previous methods was based on leak detection followed by reducing leakage during the segmentation process. This has been dealt with adjusting the segmentation parameters and performing the re-segmentation process on the pre-segmented area. This makes the algorithm very exhaustive and more dependent on the user interaction. The method presented here is...

Elimination of Blocker Signals in Radio Receivers Using Time-Varying Circuits

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rajaei Rizi, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Fotowat Ahmadi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
According to increasingly utilization of different frequency spots, RF receivers are allways under the threats of compression and desensitization because of large out-of-band or in-band blockers. The IC technologies afford fast, low-resistance switches as scaling keeps going on. With this mind, the Linear Periodic Time Varying circuits, in which the switches play the most dominant role, will be a sensible candidate for the concerns of blocker detection and rejection. Furthermore, nowadays’ receivers should be reconfigureable so as to be tunable at different frequency bands and satisfy contrastive standards. In this regard, the LPTV filters provide vast range of tunablity not only with...

Improved industrial induction time-based technique for evaluating kinetic hydrate inhibitors

    , Article Frontiers in Chemistry ; Volume 12 , 2024 ; 22962646 (ISSN) Mohammad Taheri, M ; Tohidi, B ; Ghanbari, B ; Taheri Rizi, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Kinetic hydrate inhibitor laboratory testing before field application is one of the key priorities in the oil and gas industry. The common induction-time-based technique is often used to evaluate and screen for kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs). However, the main challenge relates to the stochastic nature of hydrate nucleation observed in fresh systems, which often results in scattered data on hydrate formation with unacceptable uncertainties. A much more precise KHI evaluation method, called crystal growth inhibition (CGI), provides comprehensive insights into the inhibitory behavior of a kinetic hydrate inhibitor, including both hydrate formation and decomposition. Given that industry does...

    Abstract
Two new macrocyclic ligands containing 17- and 19-membered O2N3-donor aza-crowns anchored to [60]Fullerene were synthesized and characterized by employing HPLC, electrospray ionization mass (ESI-MS), 1H and 13C NMR, UV–vis, IR spectroscopies, as well as powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in solid state. TGA measurements revealed that upon linking each of these macrocycle rings to [60]Fullerene, the decomposition point measured for [60]Fullerene moiety was increased, indicating on the promoted stability of [60]Fullerene backbone during binding to these macrocyclic ligands. Moreover, the ground state non-covalent interactions of [60]Fullerene derivatives of...

    Abstract
We propose an observer for attitude and position estimation of a rigid body using translational and angular velocity measurements together with a single landmark. Under an observability condition depending on landmark position, global and asymptotic convergence of attitude and position estimation errors to zero is achieved. We extend the observer for the case of nonideal velocity measurements. Simulation examples demonstrate convergence properties of the observer in the face of noise and bias in velocity measurements

Pore network modeling of nanoporous ceramic membrane for hydrogen separation

    , Article Separation Science and Technology ; Volume 45, Issue 14 , Sep , 2010 , Pages 2028-2038 ; 01496395 (ISSN) Moeini, M ; Farhadi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Pore network modeling of porous media has this advantage that can consider the pore structure incorporating any desired details, but it has not been studied sufficiently. In addition, most studies are limited to mathematical modeling only which need validation. In the present study, this approach was applied to hydrogen separation from syngas by nanoporous ceramic membrane to predict the membrane permeance theoretically based on its pore structure. Gas transport through nanoporous membrane was modeled with the aim of a 2D network model. A dusty gas model was used for gas transport in the individual pores. Model validation showed that the model predictions are in good agreement with the...

    Abstract
The aim of this project is decentralized control of a group of robots (swarm robots); such that the aggregation maneuver, leader following, Identification and imaging the target, will be performed so good as to make a three-dimensional model of the target from these images. Swarm robots consist of a number of similar and limited features robots which interaction in a group of robots, will lead to special features for the group. Any agent of group decides what to do only with its local information from the environment. Swarm robots are more applicable for the jobs in which a distributed perception from the environments needed, for example space exploration and military operations. In this...

Global Estimation and Control of Rigid-body Attitude and Position Using Single Landmark Measurement

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moeini, Amir (Author) ; Namvar, Mehrzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of determining orientation and position of a rigid-body is specifying its attitude and position with respect to a specified reference frame in order to using in controller. Since there is no sensor that can directly measures the attitude and position, we have to estimate those variables by observers. In this thesis we derive a new and explicit neccesary and sufficient condition for observability of the rigid-body kinematic equation. Also we propose a new observer for estimating the attitude and position of the rigid-body. The special feature of the proposed estimator is that it use only a single landmark and is globally and exponentially stable. In the next step we study the...

Computational elucidation of the aging time effect on zeolite synthesis selectivity in the presence of water and diquaternary ammonium iodide

    Abstract
An example of zeolite selectivity (MFI → MOR) driven by synthesis aging time has been studied. Using N,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-N,N′-dipropyl-ethylenediammonium diiodide (TMDP) as an organic structure-directing agent (OSDA), the zeolite phases obtained at 2 h (MFI 97%), 8 h (MFI 84%, MOR 16%) and 24 h (MFI 43%, MOR 57%) have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction. The results suggest that at intermediate aging time, namely 8 h and 24 h, the dominant phase (MFI) is displaced by MOR. Different techniques (FT-IR, Raman, 13C MAS NMR, TGA/DTG and HC microanalysis) have been employed to verify the OSDA integrity and occlusion inside the zeolite micropores as well as to quantify the water and...
