    Abstract
In transition from concept design to detail design, designers and engineers need to find specific materials to optimize performance of the systems. The large number of materials and the wide range of manufacturing processes cause engineers always to seek new materials selection methods. In this research work a new method so called QFD method, which employs materials indices, is introduced. The method enjoys a combination of Ashby's materials selection concepts with the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tool. The QFD method, which is modified here to fit the materials selection field, provides the designer with the required weighting factors for the material indices. Incorporation of House of...

An exponential placement method for materials selection

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 78, Issue 1-4 , 2015 , Pages 641-650 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Ardeshirilajimi, A ; Aghanouri, A ; Abedian, A ; Milani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, an innovative method is proposed for material selection. This method is based on the well-known weighting properties approach while integrating a new exponential function in the method to overcome the deficiencies of previously proposed methods. Using a maximum and minimum, in each significant aspect of the problem, for scaling, the values of material properties and achieving more realistic results by not emphasizing on any of the high and low extremes and using an exponential function that ranks the candidates regardless of their number, for improving the performance of the methodology and obtaining more absolute rankings, are some of the advantages of this method. The...

    Abstract
The performance of nanoparticles for biomedical applications is often assessed by their narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation and low toxicity effects. In this work, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with different size, shape and saturation magnetization levels were synthesized via a co-precipitation technique using ferrous salts with a Fe3+/Fe2+ mole ratio equal to 2. A parametric study is conducted, based on a uniform design-of-experiments methodology and a critical polymer/iron mass ratio (r-ratio) for obtaining SPION with narrow size distribution, suitable magnetic saturation, and optimum biocompatibility is identified. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been...

    Abstract
In recent years, the fabrication of nanoparticles and exploration of their properties have attracted the attention of physicists, chemists, biologists and engineers. Interest in nanoparticles arise from the fact that the mechanical, chemical, electrical, optical, magnetic, electro-optical and magneto-optical properties of these particles are different from their bulk properties and depend on the particle size. There are numerous areas where nanoparticulate systems are of scientific and technological interest. This new book reviews research on the various components of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles

    Abstract
As the use of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) in biomedical applications increases (e.g. for targeting drug delivery and imaging), patients are likely to be exposed to products containing SPION. Despite their high biomedical importance, toxicity data for SPION are limited to date. The aim of this study is to investigate the cytotoxicity of SPION and its ability to change cell medium components. Bare and poly(ethylene glycol)-co-fumarate (PEGF)-coated SPION with narrow size distributions were synthesized. The particles were prepared by co-precipitation using ferric and ferrous salts with a molar Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio of 2. Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) and primary...

    Abstract
In this research, the galvanized steel with thickness of 2 mm was joined to the 5754 aluminum alloy with thickness of 3 mm by the cold metal transfer MIG welding–brazing process. The effect of the filler wires (AlSi3Mn, AlSi5, and AlSi12) and wire feed speeds (4.7, 5, and 5.3 m/min) on metallurgical and mechanical properties have been discussed. According to the experimental results, thickness of intermetallic compound (IMC) layer which was formed along the interface during the MIG welding–brazing was varied by changing of parameters. In addition, the results indicated that by increasing of the wire feed speed, the thickness of IMC layer at first decreased and then increased. Results...

A Markov Decision Processes Model for Supplier Selection in Supply-Chain Management Under Uncertainty

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Milani, Hamed (Author) ; Haji, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are several types of uncertainty in supply chains that cause some difficulties in the planning of a supply chain. Uncertainty on the supply side can cause interruptions in the quality, quantity, or delivery time of orders. To avoid such interruptions, retailers usually contract with two different suppliers for a common good. In this setting, one of the suppliers has higher reliability and higher price, while the other supplier offers a lower price but has a lower level of reliability. In other words, to ensure a lower level of uncertainty, retailers have to pay more. This is one of the main tradeoffs in the dual sourcing strategy. In this thesis, we consider a two-echelon supply chain...

    Abstract
For risk free application of nanoparticles in life science, energy and the environment, it is essential to understand their biological fate and potential toxicity. The application of iron oxide nanoparticles for drug delivery has been one of the most promising researches in the field of nanotechnology. However, there are two major problems associated with magnetically targeted deliveries that still need close attention: • As the drug is coated on to the particle surfaces, there is the possibility of faster drug release (Burst Effect). Therefore, after reaching to the specific site, there is very low amount of drug for delivery. To overcome this problem, some researchers have used conjugation...

    Abstract
In this paper, it is shown that the main source of mechanical energy of cardiovascular (CV) system i.e., rhythmic heart contraction is transformed to the oscillations of the CV walls and blood flow, and finally CV acoustical waves. These waves propagate through both blood flow (hemodynamical pathways) and tissues (viscoelastical pathways) toward the skin. Nonetheless, the CV walls could be assumed as the source of acoustical waves, since they act as the interface between blood flows and other tissues including skin. After obtaining the approximate accelerations of CV walls from pressure-flow (PF) models, we also needed to model the viscoelastical pathways until the skin. Some improvements on...

Ionic liquid based on α-amino acid anion and N7,N9-dimethylguaninium cation ([dMG][AA]): Theoretical study on the structure and electronic properties

    , Article Journal of Physical Chemistry A ; Volume 116, Issue 22 , April , 2012 , Pages 5436-5444 ; 10895639 (ISSN) Shakourian Fard, M ; Fattahi, A ; Bayat, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The interactions between five amino acid based anions ([AA] - (AA = Gly, Phe, His, Try, and Tyr)) and N7,N9-dimethylguaninium cation ([dMG] +) have been investigated by the hybrid density functional theory method B3LYP together with the basis set 6-311++G(d,p). The calculated interaction energy was found to decrease in magnitude with increasing side-chain length in the amino acid anion. The interaction between the [dMG] + cation and [AA] - anion in the most stable configurations of ion pairs is a hydrogen bonding interaction. These hydrogen bonds (H bonds) were analyzed by the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. Finally, several correlations...

    Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the uniform cooling of a hot isothermal heated target surface, using four turbulent impinging air jets. Eight parameters including the width of jets, the space between the inner jets, the space between inner and outer jets, the distance of jets from the plate, the impingement angle of jets, and the overall volumetric flow rate of the cooling air per unit depth of the nozzle are considered as design variables. The normalized standard deviation of the local Nusselt number from the desired Nusselt number is considered as the objective function. An optimization algorithm based on pattern search method is utilized to obtain the optimum array of the jets....

    Abstract
Horizontal ground heat exchangers (GHEs) have a lower cost in comparison to vertical ones; however, they require more land area. For the sake of reducing the required land area for horizontal GHEs, flat-panel GHEs have been recently introduced. In this piece of research, a 3-D numerical model has been developed to predict the thermal performance of flat-panel GHEs. In this study, at first, the thermal performance of a flat-panel GHE has been compared with that of linear horizontal ones. The results demonstrate that the flat-panel GHE has a better thermal performance of about 27% in comparison to an arrangement of linear GHEs with a value of 0.5 m for pipe spacing. In the second part of this...
