Seismic Behavior of Curved (Sinusoidal) Shear Wall
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor)
Abstract
So far many systems have been proposed to withstand the lateral loads. For example in a concrete structure, the two concrete moment frame and moment frame with shear wall are commonly used.in the latter case, the shear walls are used to bear a large part of lateral forces.one of the disadvantages of this system is the high consumption of materials and lack of maneuver on their shape. The curved concrete shear wall is a new seismic system that, due to the curvature on the plan, will have the ability to provide the hardness, strength, and ductility required to withstand lateral loads. The goal of this project is to investigate the seismic performance of these types of walls against cyclic...
Using three-dimensional finite element analysis for simulation of residual stresses in railway wheels
, Article Engineering Failure Analysis ; Vol. 45, issue , October , 2014 , p. 449-455 ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
One of the most important issues in railway wheels is residual stresses. It is desirable to produce less residual stresses when possible and to decrease the remaining residual stresses in the wheels. The objective of this paper is to provide an estimation of the residual stresses in the rail wheel caused by the stress field from heat treatment process of a railway wheel. A three-dimensional nonlinear stress analysis model has been applied to estimate stress fields of the railway mono-block wheel in heat treatment process. After forging or casting, railway wheels are heat-treated to induce the desirable circumferential compressive residual stress in the upper rim. Finite element analysis...

Abstract
This paper presents the results of a power quality survey in a distribution system. More than fifty nodes are selected and monitored. Power quality indices are extracted based on IEEE and IEC Standards. The evaluation includes field data collection, extraction of statistical power quality indices and comparing the results against standard limits. Experimental data as well as clarifying tables and graphs are presented. The results are then discussed to evaluate the strength and weaknesses of applying standard limits when real observations are to be performed. Some proposals are also made in order to make standard procedures and limits more effective based on practical observations. © 2007,...

Abstract
For the design of rubble mound breakwaters on soft soil, it is essential to predict the behavior of soft soil and large deformations phenomena occurring in the course of construction of the rubble mound breakwater. Large deformations in various problems can be well simulated using the coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian (CEL) method. In this study, the CEL method has been used to simulate the rubble mounds construction on soft soil and predict the resulting settlements. To validate the numerical model, the results of three experiments conducted in the physical modeling laboratory at Kharazmi University were used. Also, two case studies of real rubble mound breakwaters constructed on soft seabeds...
Rolling Contact Fatigue under Influence of Residual Stresses
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Farahi, Gholamhossin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Rolling contact fatigue (RCF) phenomena is important in reducing the fatigue life and increasing the cost of maintenance. Accurate prediction of crack growth on wheels and the influence of residual stresses by FEM modeling can affect the maintenance planning. Therefore, investigation of rolling contact fatigue and its effect on rolling members life seem necessary. The first step to solve a rolling contact fatigue problem is the residual stress determination. In this research, wheel/rail contact is assumed. A bandage wheel with accurate geometry using finite element method is studied. For this purpose, a 3D elastic-plastic finite element model in ANSYS is conducted using model. The...

Abstract
This paper proposes an artificial pheromone communication system inspired by social insects. The proposed model is an extension of the previously developed pheromone communication system, COS-Φ. The new model increases COS-Φ flexibility by adding two new features, namely, diffusion and advection. The proposed system consists of an LCD flat screen that is placed horizontally, overhead digital camera to track mobile robots, which move on the screen, and a computer, which simulates the pheromone behaviour and visualises its spatial distribution on the LCD. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed pheromone system, real micro-robots, Colias, were deployed which mimicked insects' role in...

Abstract
Apnea-bradycardia is a medical term for prolonged respiratory pause accompanied with a heart rate reduction which is a common event among preterm infants. Repetition of apnea-bradycardia episodescompromises oxygenation and tissue perfusion and may lead to neurological impairment or even short-term morbi-mortality. Main solution to this breathing-related disorder is continues monitoring of infants in neonatal intensive care units in order to detect apnea-bradycardia event, generate an alarm and warn available nurse or physician to initiate quick nursing actions. Various studies have been done in this area and different methods are proposed which mainly focus on cardiac signal processing. This...
Nonlinear Buckling Optimization in Laminated Composite Plate Using Genetic Algorithm
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kouchakzadeh, Mohammad Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Designing structures made from composite materials is challenging due to the need to select the thickness, number of layers, and fiber orientations. By carefully choosing the lamination sequence, the desired properties can be optimized. Buckling is one of the most critical phenomena in the stability analysis of a structure, as it can lead to failure before the structure reaches its yield point. This thesis investigates the layer configuration of laminated composite plates using a genetic algorithm to maximize the nonlinear buckling critical load. In this approach, the nonlinear behavior of the structure is analyzed up to the critical point, and a genetic algorithm is used to find the global...

Abstract
In this work, magnetite nanoparticles (mean particle size about 20 nm) were synthesized via coprecipitation method. In order to investigate the kinetics of nanoparticle formation, variation in the amount of reactants within the process was measured using pH-meter and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) instruments. Results show that nanoparticle formation behavior can be described by Avrami equations. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were performed to study the chemical and morphological characterization of nanoparticles. Some simplifying assumptions were employed for estimating the nucleation and growth rate of magnetite nanoparticles

Abstract
Automatic cell segmentation has various applications in different parts of science. The development of automated methods for cell segmentation, remains challenging in situations where there are touching cells. In this paper we propose a new method for separating touching cells. As the first step, we use a combination of graph segmentation algorithm and thresholding for segmenting foreground objects and producing a binary image. Next, boundary points of separation zone are selected by using a corner detection algorithm. Finally, the marker controller watershed transform is applied to separate touching cells at selected points. © 2008 IEEE

Kierkegaardian Faith: On The Subject of Faith and Her Hope
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sefidkhoh, Meisam (Supervisor) ; Azadegan, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this treatise, it will be shown that the subject of faith is the subject who loves God and in showing her love to God, she sacrifices her dearest things in the world. By doing that, she would free herself from everything that mind herself. She doesn’t do this action to be given a better reward by God. Her motivation for performing this action is nothing but love. Meanwhile, the subject of faith hopes God to respond to her love and engage in an I-Thou relationship with her. Now, her hope would be justified when God plays an active role in the world and admires her action, i.e., when eros can be attributed to God
Topological spin liquids in the ruby lattice with anisotropic Kitaev interactions

Abstract
The ruby lattice is a four-valent lattice interpolating between honeycomb and triangular lattices. In this work we investigate the topological spin-liquid phases of a spin Hamiltonian with Kitaev interactions on the ruby lattice using exact diagonalization and perturbative methods. The latter interactions combined with the structure of the lattice yield a model with Z2×Z2 gauge symmetry. We mapped out the phase diagram of the model and found gapped and gapless spin-liquid phases. While the low-energy sector of the gapped phase corresponds to the well-known topological color code model on a honeycomb lattice, the low-energy sector of the gapless phases is described by an effective spin model...

Abstract
We investigate the average frequency of positive slope ν +α, crossing the velocity field in the Burgers equation. The level crossing analysis in the inviscid limit and the total number of positive crossings of the velocity field before the creation of singularities are given. The main goal of this paper is to show that this quantity, ν+α, is a good measure for the fluctuations of velocity fields in the Burgers turbulence. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd
