    Abstract
The turbulent heat transfer in gas-solid flows through an inclined pipe under various inclination angles is studied with constant wall heat flux. The hydrodynamic k- τ and kθ- τθ thermal two phase model is used in a lagrangian/Eulerian four way approach. The numerical results agreed reasonably with available experimental data in vertical and horizontal pipe flows. The effects of inclination angles on the flow patterns are reported. The pressure drop and Nusselt number are enhanced significantly as the inclination increases up to a certain angle. The mass loading ratio has influence on the optimal inclination angle. With increasing loading ratio, the optimal inclination angle of maximum...

    Abstract
Content base image retrieval is an important research field with many applications. In this paper we presents a new approach for finding similar images to a given query, in a general-purpose image database using content-based image retrieval. Color and texture are used as basic features to describe images. In addition, a binary tree structure is used to describe higher level features of an image. It has been used to keep information about separate segments of the images. The performance of the proposed system has been compared with the SIMPLIcity system using COREL image database. Our experimental results showed that among 10 image categories available in COREL database, our system had a...

A Method for Searching on Encrypted Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mansoori, Fatemeh (Author) ; Jalili, Rasool (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Using database encryption to protect data in some situations where access control is not soleley enough is inevitable. Database encryption provides an additional layer of protecton to conventional access control techniques. It prevents unauthorized users, including intruders breaking into a network, from viewing the sensitive data. As a result data remains protected even in the event that database is successfully attacked or stolen. However, encryption and decryption of data result in database performance degradation. In the situation where all the information is stored in encrypted form, one cannot make the selection on the database content any more. Data should be decrypted first, so an...

Compartion of Numerical Methods for Nonsymmetrical Contact Problem

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mansoori, Hassan (Author) ; Adibnazari, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This thesis aims to discuss matters in the area of non-symmetrical contact. Problems have been solved by the use of different numerical methods and their precision has been determined. In most projects which have been conducted in regards with contact's studies, Indenter has been considered vertical on the other object and particles of two objects are moving in the vertical direction of the free surface. This matter has resulted in obtaining symmetrical functions relevant to the point of beginning contact which helps distributing contact pressure, stresses and movements. In addition, mostly profiles of two involved objects are considered symmetrical that this matter greatly contributes...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Shah Mansoori, Nasim (Author) ; Shafiee, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the early days of quantum mechanics it seemed that, this theory is presented to describe atoms and molecules. As the time went on, by distinguishing different applications of quantum mechanics a question raised in scientists minds. Is it possible to see strange quantum effects in every day life. In this regard several attempt have been made to see such properties. One of these phenomena is observing interference effects for Fulleren molecules. In this thesis we investigate different properties of a macroscopic quantum system in different situations. We showed that an asymmetric double well potential, which is a macroscopic quantum system in interaction with environment violates...

Design and Synthesis of Novel Coumarin Derivatives as Quorum Sensing Inhibitors & Performing Click Chemistry Involving Lysozyme Protein and a Novel Synthetic Fluorecent Compound

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mansoori, Sirwan (Author) ; Kalhor, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Quorum Sensing is a cell-to-cell communication pr°Cess depending on cell concentration. Communication among bacterial cells °Ccurs through small molecular signals called autoinducers. The consequences of quorum sensing include the activation of pathogenic properties and activation of the gene for biofilm formation. Biofilms are aggregations of bacteria that adhere to surfaces through extracellular polymeric substances. Bacteria in the biofilm phase are much more resistant to antimicrobial agents than their free-swimming counterparts (i.e. the bacteria in planktonic form). In this study, first a series of coumarin derivatives were synthesized; but due to low solubility of the synthesized...

Investigation of the temperature and density dependences of the effective pair potential parameters using variational theory

    , Article International Journal of Thermophysics ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2004 , Pages 187-203 ; 0195928X (ISSN) Kermanpour, F ; Parsafar, G. A ; Mansoori, G. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers  2004
    Abstract
A variational theory (VT), in which the potential energy of a real system is evaluated relative to the hard-sphere system, was used to investigate the medium's effects on the pair potential parameters. By adding the medium's effects to the isolated pair potential, the concept of an 'effective pair potential' (EPP) was introduced. The EPP parameters were compared with those of the average effective pair potential (AEPP) for Ar, which showed the importance of the medium effects and the long range interactions of the AEPP in dense fluids. The study showed that the depth parameter of the AEPP is much larger than that of the EPP

    Abstract
The conventional Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is not biodegradable and not bioactive to bond with the native bone and causes tissue necrosis resulting from its high exothermic polymerization. Hence, biodegradable bioactive bone cements with suitable setting time and mechanical properties should be introduced. In this study, novel bioactive bone cements containing Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate (CSH), Bioactive Glass (BG), and Tricalcium Silicate (TSC) were developed. Firstly, CSH and BG binary system was optimized based on preliminary setting and mechanical tests. Secondly, the composite bioactive bone cements were obtained by adding different quantities of TCS to the optimized...

    Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are caused by hereditary factors, environmental conditions, and medication-related issues. On the other hand, the cardiotoxicity of drugs should be thoroughly examined before entering the market. In this regard, heart-on-chip (HOC) systems have been developed as a more efficient and cost-effective solution than traditional methods, such as 2D cell culture and animal models. HOCs must replicate the biology, physiology, and pathology of human heart tissue to be considered a reliable platform for heart disease modeling and drug testing. Therefore, many efforts have been made to find the best methods to fabricate different parts of HOCs and to improve the bio-mimicry of...

Estimating parameters with pre-specified accuracies in distributed parameter systems using optimal experiment design

    , Article International Journal of Control ; Volume 89, Issue 8 , 2016 , Pages 1533-1553 ; 00207179 (ISSN) Potters, M. G ; Bombois, X ; Mansoori, M ; Van Den Hof, P. M. J ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Estimation of physical parameters in dynamical systems driven by linear partial differential equations is an important problem. In this paper, we introduce the least costly experiment design framework for these systems. It enables parameter estimation with an accuracy that is specified by the experimenter prior to the identification experiment, while at the same time minimising the cost of the experiment. We show how to adapt the classical framework for these systems and take into account scaling and stability issues. We also introduce a progressive subdivision algorithm that further generalises the experiment design framework in the sense that it returns the lowest cost by finding the...

Pressure-transient analysis of bottomhole pressure and rate measurements by use of system-identification techniques

    , Article SPE Journal ; Volume 20, Issue 5 , October , 2015 , Pages 1005-1027 ; 1086055X (ISSN) Mansoori, M ; Van Den Hof, P. M. J ; Jansen, J. D ; Rashtchian, D ; Sharif University of Technology
    Society of Petroleum Engineers  2015
    Abstract
This study presents a novel perspective on pressure-transient analysis (PTA) of downhole-pressure and flow-rate data by use of system-identification (SI) techniques as widely used in advanced process engineering. Key features of the paper are that it considers the classic PTA process from a system-theoretical perspective; derives the causal structure of the flow dynamics; proposes a method to deal with continuously varying pressure and flow-rate signals contaminated with correlated noise, which estimates physical reservoir parameters through a systematic matching procedure in the frequency domain; and can cope with arbitrary (i.e., not necessarily piecewise constant) flow-rate signals. To...

Down from the pedestal: Revisiting the exploit of literature in EFL language classes

    , Article International Journal of Applied Linguistics and English Literature ; Volume 4, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 158-168 ; 22003592 (ISSN) Rezanejad, A ; Lari, Z ; Mosalli, Z ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
According to Arthur (2006, p. 200), “Through the use of literature, a language learning experience might become at the same time a source of immediate pleasure and satisfaction for the student. This possibility makes literature an appealing teaching device for ESL teachers”. However, numerous factors may contribute to the teachers’ lack of interest in using literary texts as a teaching tool. This study was an attempt to investigate Iranian EFL teachers’ attitude toward using literature in language classes and their perception toward the probable reasons of some teachers’ lack of interest in doing so. Altogether forty-four language teachers (19 females and 25 males, with a mean age of 26)...

Inclusion of carbon nanotubes in a hydroxyapatite sol-gel matrix

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 35, Issue 7 , 2009 , Pages 2987-2991 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Najafi, H ; Nemati, Z. A ; Sadeghian, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In this study, the inclusion of multi-walled carbon nanotubes as the second phase in the hydroxyapatite matrix, in order to improve the mechanical strength, has been performed via the sol-gel process. The stability of carbon nanotube sol with the changes of pH and dispersant values (sodium dodecyl sulfate) was evaluated by zeta potential analysis. The results indicated that synthesis of hydroxyapatite particles in the presence of the carbon nanotubes had the best result in homogenization of the carbon nanotube dispersion and faster crystallization of hydroxyapatite. The crystallization of hydroxyapatite phase was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction...

    Abstract
The unwanted effects of diffraction and defocus aberration in three-dimensional integral imaging are taken into account by using the Fourier optics approach. The concepts of point spread function and optical transfer function widely in use for conventional two-dimensional imaging are generalized and applied to three-dimensional integral imaging systems. The effects of diffraction and defocus aberration are then studied and the performance of the conventional single lens imaging system is compared against that of the integral imaging

    Abstract
High temperature shape memory NiTiHf thin films with varying hafnium contents up to 28.7 at.% were fabricated by DC magnetron sputtering using simultaneous sputter deposition from separate elemental targets. The required film composition was achieved by adjusting the power ratio to the targets. The as-deposited films were amorphous; a post deposition annealing was performed at 550 °C to crystallize the films. Two-micron thick films were characterized by energy dispersive spectroscopy in a scanning electron microscope, temperature controlled X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and atomic force microscopy. The results showed that above 10 at.% Hf additions the transformation...

Strong Revenue (Non-)Monotonicity of Single-parameter Auctions

    Abstract
Consider Myerson's optimal auction with respect to an inaccurate prior, e.g., estimated from data, which is an underestimation of the true value distribution. Can the auctioneer expect getting at least the optimal revenue w.r.t. the inaccurate prior since the true value distribution is larger? This so-called strong revenue monotonicity is known to be true for single-parameter auctions when the feasible allocations form a matroid. We find that strong revenue monotonicity fails to generalize beyond the matroid setting, and further show that auctions in the matroid setting are the only downward-closed auctions that satisfy strong revenue monotonicity. On the flip side, we recover an approximate...

Subsidy cut and its effect on tehran electricity company: A system dynamics approach

    2012
    Abstract
In recent years, subsidy payment has been made a main challenge for governments due to growth of population and energy price in global markets. Targeted subsidy plan has been implemented in Iran since last year, and this article discusses its effects on costs and revenues of Tehran Electricity Company as one of the major subdivisions of Iran's electricity industry. In the new system, structural changes have been made in electricity tariffs, so it is not possible to predict the future trends in electricity consumption only based on the past consumptions. In order to model the decision making structure in the recent conditions, a system dynamics method is applied. In addition to modeling the...
