Abstract
The use of both hands is often required for force/torque exertions, particularly when using hand tools. This study investigated the effects of handle diameter (3–5 cm), between-handle distance (0.5–1.5 shoulder span (SS), workpiece orientation (horizontal/frontal), working height (shoulder/elbow/knuckle), and exertion direction (clockwise/counter-clockwise) on maximum two-handed torque strength, usability and comfort/discomfort while using T-shaped handles. Participants (n = 20) performed 36 experimental conditions. The handle diameter had no significant main effect on torque strength. The 3 cm diameter handle was associated with better usability and comfort compared to other options. Higher...

Abstract
A distributed embedded system consists of different processing elements (PEs) communicating via communication links. PEs have various power characteristics and in turn, have different thermal profiles. With new technologies, processor power density is dramatically increased which results in high temperature. This alarming trend underscores the importance of temperature management methods in system design. The majority of proposed techniques to address thermal issues, impose severe penalties on performance and reliability. We present Schedule Swapping, a technique for reducing peak temperature in distributed embedded systems while satisfying real-time constraints. Contrary to many other...

Abstract
Jupyter notebooks have become indispensable tools for data analysis and processing in various domains. However, despite their widespread use, there is a notable research gap in understanding and analyzing the contents and code metrics of these notebooks. This gap is primarily attributed to the absence of datasets that encompass both Jupyter notebooks and extracted their code metrics. To address this limitation, we introduce DistilKaggle, a unique dataset specifically curated to facilitate research on code metrics in Jupyter notebooks, utilizing the Kaggle repository as a prime source. Through an extensive study, we identify thirty-four code metrics that significantly impact Jupyter notebook...
Speed limit of quantum metrology

Abstract
Quantum metrology employs nonclassical systems to improve the sensitivity of measurements. The ultimate limit of this sensitivity is dictated by the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. On the other hand, the quantum speed limit bounds the speed of dynamics of any quantum process. We show that the speed limit of quantum dynamics sets a fundamental bound on the minimum attainable phase estimation error through the quantum Cramér–Rao bound, relating the precision directly to the underlying dynamics of the system. In particular, various metrologically important states are considered, and their dynamical speeds are analyzed. We find that the bound could, in fact, be related to the nonclassicality of...

Abstract
In software development, code documentation is crucial for collaboration and maintenance, especially as projects become more complex. However, it is often neglected due to the tedious effort it requires. This paper explores automating documentation generation for computational notebooks, focusing on the impact of code metrics such as lines of code, API popularity, and complexity on this task. Using a dataset of 22K code-documentation pairs, we compare deep learning models with and without code metric augmentation. The results show that incorporating these metrics significantly improves the accuracy of documentation generation, underscoring the connection between code metrics and quality...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Nowadays, due to environmental problems, electric cars are becoming more and more popular. The main drawback of these cars is due to the large volume, weight, and price of the battery and its long charging time. Charging the battery at short intervals or even in moving, can help to use a smaller battery and reduce battery problems. Therefore, the dynamic wireless power transmission technology that provides power without having to stop the car to recharge its batteries can revolutionize the electric car industry. The ever-expanding advance of power electronics and wireless power transmission technologies has made it possible to transfer power to moving electric cars. Barriers to this industry...

Abstract
Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) have wide application prospects in the field of aerospace, automobile and other industries because of their good properties, such as high specific strength, good ductility, and excellent fatigue properties. However, in order to improve their fatigue strength and life, crack initiation and growth at the surface layers must be suppressed using surface treatments. Shot peening (SP) is an effective surface mechanical treatment method widely used in industry which can improve the mechanical properties of a surface. However, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been used as an efficient approach to predict and optimize the science and engineering problems. In...

Abstract
Multimode macroscopic states consisting of a superposition of spin coherent states that are generated in a trapped ion system are introduced. The role of various parameters that control the entanglement of the system are exposed, and their effects are quantified. In particular, it is shown that the generated states exhibit different entanglement characteristics for odd and even 2nj, where j is the spin of each mode and n is the number of modes. © 2018 Optical Society of America
Does knowledge base complexity affect spatial patterns of innovation? An empirical analysis in the upstream petroleum industry

Abstract
Using network analysis, we investigate if an industry's complex and integrated knowledge base leads to a higher spatial concentration (or dispersal)of innovative activities. This is important because the extant literature provides competing claims about how knowledge base complexity impacts on the spatial distribution of industrial innovation. To help empirically resolve this issue, we draw on longitudinal data (1970–2010)on the upstream petroleum industry and build indexes of entropy and complexity to render knowledge base dynamics, assess the spatial concentration of innovation, and study industry structural transformations. We first find a correlation – once a crucial distinction between...

Abstract
The end diaphragm of bridges are normally designed to resist lateral seismic forces imposed on the superstructure in earthquake prone regions. Using ductile diaphragms with high deformation capacity could reduce the seismic demands on the substructure and prevent costly damage under strong ground motions. The end diaphragms of steel tub girder bridges with high lateral stiffness and dominant shear behavior have a potential to be used as ductile fuse elements. In this study, a steel plate shear diaphragm (SPSD) is introduced as an external end diaphragm of tub girder steel bridges to reduce the seismic demands imposed on the substructure. Quasi static nonlinear analyses were conducted to...
Speed limit of quantum dynamics near the event horizon of black holes

Abstract
Quantum mechanics imposes a fundamental bound on the minimum time required for the quantum systems to evolve between two states of interest. This bound introduces a limit on the speed of the dynamical evolution of the systems, known as the quantum speed limit. We show that black holes can drastically affect the speed limit of a fermionic quantum system subjected to an open quantum dynamics. As we demonstrate, the quantum speed limit can enhance at the vicinity of a black hole's event horizon in the Schwarzschild spacetime. © 2020 The Author(s)
Complementarity-entanglement tradeoff in quantum gravity

Abstract
The quantization of gravity remains one of the most important - yet extremely elusive - challenges at the heart of modern physics. Any attempt to resolve this long-standing problem seems to be doomed, as the route to any direct empirical evidence (i.e., detecting gravitons) that sheds light on the quantum aspect of gravity is far beyond the current capabilities. Recently, it was discovered that gravitationally induced entanglement, tailored in the interferometric frameworks, can be used to witness the quantum nature of gravity. Even though these schemes offer promising tools for investigating quantum gravity, many fundamental and empirical aspects of the schemes are yet to be discovered....

Abstract
Deep excavations are widespread geotechnical structures in urban areas. Vertical deep excavations may cause irreparable harms to the adjacent structures due to excessive deformations. Therefore, obtaining accurate soil parameters, rigorous design of wall’s structural components, and monitored construction are essential elements of any successful project of this kind. Soil-nail walls are a type of tied-back walls that are widely used due to their simple execution and low cost. In order to facilitate the design procedure of Soil-nail walls for deep excavations and reduce the number of numerical modelings, Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) method has been employed. The developed...

Abstract
Deep excavations in urban areas may cause excessive ground deformations, leading to potential damage to the surrounding buildings. To prevent such problems, some techniques, such as the anchored wall systems, are used as a supporting method. This study, based on a large number of data produced by FE simulations and using the MARS approach, first presents a straightforward relation that can predict the maximum horizontal displacement of the anchored wall systems. Then, a simple predictive relation using MARS is established for developing a unique stiffness parameter. Finally, a novel design procedure based on the proposed MARS models, the stiffness parameter, geometric relationships, and...

A probabilistic task scheduling method for grid environments
, Article Future Generation Computer Systems ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 513-524 ; 0167739X (ISSN) ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
This paper presents a probabilistic task scheduling method to minimize the overall mean response time of the tasks submitted to the grid computing environments. Minimum mean response time of a given task can be obtained by finding a subset of appropriate computational resources to service the task. To achieve this, a discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) representing the task scheduling process within the grid environment is constructed. The connection probabilities between the nodes representing the grid managers and resources can be considered as transition probabilities of the obtained DTMC. Knowing the mean response times of the managers and resources, and finding fundamental matrix of the...

Abstract
In this paper, the availability of the Resource Management System (RMS) and computational resources distributed within grid computing environments is studied. Since the RMS acts as a heart of the grid environments, the unavailability of this system can render the entire environment to the inoperable phase. Furthermore, the unavailability of the grid resources may result in degradation of the performance of the grid. Therefore, considering the great importance of the availability issue in grid computing environments, the Stochastic Activity Networks (SANs) are exploited to model and evaluate the availability of grid environments. The proposed SAN models the failure of the resource management...

Abstract
Task scheduling algorithms in grid environments strive to maximize the overall throughput of the grid. In order to maximize the throughput of the grid environments, the makespan of the grid tasks should be minimized. In this paper, a new task scheduling algorithm is proposed to assign tasks to the grid resources with goal of minimizing the total makespan of the tasks. The algorithm uses the genetic approach to find the suitable assignment within grid resources. The experimental results obtained from applying the proposed algorithm to schedule independent tasks within grid environments demonstrate the applicability of the algorithm in achieving schedules with comparatively lower makespan in...
