    Abstract
Steel box girders have two webs and two flanges on top that are usually connected with shear connectors to the concrete deck and are also known as tub girders. The end diaphragms of such bridges comprise of a stiffened steel plate welded to the inside of the girder at each end. The diaphragms play a major role in transferring vertical and lateral loads to the bearings and substructure. A review of literature shows that the cyclic behavior of diaphragms under earthquake loading has not been studied previously. This paper uses a nonlinear finite element model to study the behavior of the end diaphragms under gravity and seismic loads. Different bearing device and stiffener configurations have...

Air quenching as a reliable technique to obtain colossal dielectric constant with low loss in (In, Nb)-co doped TiO2

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 267 , May , 2020 Maleki Shahraki, M ; Mahmoudi, P ; Karimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B. V  2020
    Abstract
In this research, for the first time, the effect of air quenching on the microstructural and electrical properties of (In, Nb) co-doped TiO2 was investigated. The FE-SEM images showed that the air quenching has no effect on microstructure of co-doped TiO2. However, air quenching affected the electrical properties so that the dielectric constant in the frequency of 1 kHz at room temperature sharply enhanced from 21*103 to 26*104 and the dielectric loss surprisingly decreased from 0.6 to 0.1. This incredible improvement in the dielectric properties is attributed to the electron-pined defect dipoles which has been activated through air quenching. © 2020 Elsevier B.V

    , Article Materials Letters ; Volume 230 , 2018 , Pages 9-11 ; 0167577X (ISSN) Maleki Shahraki, M ; Mahmoudi, P ; Abdollahi, M ; Ebadzadeh, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
In this research, fine-grained SnO2-based varistors with a simple microstructure and the mean grain size of 0.8 µm were obtained by the microwave sintering method. The breakdown electric field measured for these varistors was 12 kV/cm that is 3 times higher than the conventional-sintered varistors. The high nonlinear coefficient (60) and low leakage current density (9 µA/cm2) were achieved in fine-grained SnO2 varistors. The fine-grained SnO2 varistors appropriately clamped pulse current surges and the calculated value of the clamping voltage ratio of these varistors was 2. The excellent electrical properties and protective effect of fine-grained SnO2 varistors showed that these varistors...

Novel multifunctional capacitor-varistor ceramics based on SnO2

    , Article Ceramics International ; Volume 44, Issue 16 , 2018 , Pages 20386-20390 ; 02728842 (ISSN) Maleki Shahraki, M ; Alipour, S ; Mahmoudi, P ; Karimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Up to now, multifunctional varistor-capacitor materials were based on TiO2, even though these materials failed to have practical applications. For the first time, in this research, multifunctional varistor-capacitor properties are observed in the CuO-doped SnO2-CoO-Sb2O3 system. The XRD analysis showed that this system has a single phase microstructure. SEM images indicated that the CuO addition resulted in a better densification and larger grain size. The very low electric breakdown field of the CuO-doped SnO2-CoO-Sb2O3 system (12 V/mm, similar to TiO2), is a consequence of coarse-grained microstructure. This varistor had a suitable surge withstand capability as well. The colossal...

    Abstract
This research focused on making novel low-voltage SnO2 varistors by CuO addition on conventional high-voltage SnO2 varistors. Moreover, the withstand surge capability of samples was studied. The results showed that CuO addition enhances grain growth of SnO2 and coarse-grained SnO2 varistors with simple microstructures were acquired in 1 mol% CuO-doped sample. This coarse-grained SnO2 varistor presented a high nonlinear coefficient (23) and low leakage current density (23 µA/cm2) with low breakdown field value of 0.6 kV/cm. Despite the large grain size, the low residual voltage ratio (2.3) was obtained for this sample compared to the CuO-free sample. The decrease in grain electric resistivity...

    Speed limit of quantum metrology

    , Article Scientific Reports ; Volume 13, Issue 1 , 2023 ; 20452322 (ISSN) Maleki, Y ; Ahansaz, B ; Maleki, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Nature Research  2023
    Abstract
Quantum metrology employs nonclassical systems to improve the sensitivity of measurements. The ultimate limit of this sensitivity is dictated by the quantum Cramér–Rao bound. On the other hand, the quantum speed limit bounds the speed of dynamics of any quantum process. We show that the speed limit of quantum dynamics sets a fundamental bound on the minimum attainable phase estimation error through the quantum Cramér–Rao bound, relating the precision directly to the underlying dynamics of the system. In particular, various metrologically important states are considered, and their dynamical speeds are analyzed. We find that the bound could, in fact, be related to the nonclassicality of...

Investigation on the bending properties and geometric defects of steel/polymer/steel sheets—three-point and hat-shaped bending

    , Article Metals ; Volume 14, Issue 8 , 2024 ; 20754701 (ISSN) Maleki, P ; Shahzamanian, M ; Basirun, W. J ; Wu, P ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Steel/polymer/steel laminates, also known as laminated steels, are composite materials consisting of bonding layers of steel and polymer. The polymer layer acts as a bonding agent between the steel layers, imparting additional properties such as low density, impact resistance, and thermal insulation, while the steel layers provide strength and formability. These laminated steels have found increasing applications in automotive, aerospace, and construction industries to reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency. The bending behavior of this laminates is more complex compared to that of a single layer of metallic sheets. This complexity arises from significant differences in mechanical...

    Abstract
Biosensors could be used as digital devices to measure the sample infield. Consequently, computational programming along with experimental achievements are required. In this study, a novel biosensor/artificial neural network (ANN) integrated system was developed. Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene)(PEDOT), graphene oxide nano-sheets (GONs) and laccase (Lac) were used to construct a biosensor. The simple and one-pot process was accomplished by electropolymerizing 3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene (EDOT) along with GONs and Lac as dopants on glassy carbon electrode. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical characterization were conducted to confirm successful enzyme entrapment. The...

The effect of doping Bi2O3 on sintering temperature, microstructure, electrical nonlinearity and stability of high-voltage SnO2 varistors

    , Article Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Electronics ; Volume 34, Issue 15 , 2023 ; 09574522 (ISSN) Maleki Shahraki, M ; Mahmoudi, P ; Golmohammad, M ; Akbarpour, M. R ; Sohrabi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2023
    Abstract
One of the significant drawbacks of SnO2 varistors compared to their old counterpart, ZnO varistors, in high-voltage applications is their higher sintering temperature. Although the researchers have been attempting to lower the sintering temperature by employing new techniques, the obtained varistors do not show an acceptable capability to absorb surge currents. In this research, by optimizing the Bi2O3 amount added to the well-known SnO2 varistor system, the sintering temperature of varistors reduced to 1250 °C. It is for the first time that the reduction in sintering temperature of SnO2 varistors was accompanied not only with maintaining the nonlinearity of the obtained varistors, but also...

    Abstract
Severe plastic deformation methods such as severe shot peening are used in order to improve mechanical properties of the components by surface microstructure nanocrystallization. Severe shot peening is one of the popular mechanical surface treatments generally aimed at generating nanograined layer and compressive residual stress close to the surface. Moreover, artificial neural network has been used as an efficient approach to predict and optimize the engineering problems. In present study effects of conventional and severe shot peening on cast iron were modelled by means of artificial neural networks and they were compared. The obtained results indicate that severe shot peening has superior...

    Abstract
In this research, full density, single phase microstructure (in the XRD and SEM detection limits), and fine-grained SnO2 varistors with an average grain size of 0.65 μm was acquired at low temperature by the two-step sintering technique. The sintering temperature was successfully decreased from 1300 °C in the normal sintering to 1150 °C and 1100 °C of respectively the first and the second stage in the two-step sintering. The mechanism of grain growth suppression of the two-step sintered samples was discussed and it was suggested that in addition to triple point junction, solute drag and/or nano-secondary phases contribute to cease the grain growth. These SnO2 varistors exhibited ultra-high...

Performance evaluation of epidemic content retrieval in DTNs with restricted mobility

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management ; Volume 16, Issue 2 , 2019 , Pages 701-714 ; 19324537 (ISSN) Rashidi, L ; Entezari Maleki, R ; Chatzopoulos, D ; Hui, P ; Trivedi, K. S ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In some applicable scenarios, such as community patrolling, mobile nodes are restricted to move only in their own communities. Exploiting the meetings of the nodes within the same community and the nodes within the neighboring communities, a delay tolerant network (DTN) can provide communication between any two nodes. In this paper, two analytical models based on stochastic reward nets (SRNs) are proposed to evaluate the performance of the epidemic content retrieval in such multi-community DTNs. Performance measures computed by the proposed models are the average retrieval delay and the average number of transmissions. The monolithic SRN model proposed in the first step is not scalable, in...

The SPSed sample which was sintered at 650 ᵒC possessed maximum density of 98% and the ultra-fine-grained microstructure with the mean grain size of 380 nm. Surprisingly, all SPSed samples exhibited Ohmic...

Evaluation of Response Modification Factor for Cable Styaed Bridges

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology (Author) ; Maleki, Shervin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Bridges are among the crucial elements of transportation networks and play an important role in facilitating emergency relief efforts following earthquakes. For this reasons, they should have an appropriate performance in earthquakes; Thus, presentation of true design of bridges was necessary. Elastic design of bridges due to the earthquake is uneconomic; hence, during an earthquake, the codes permitted to structures go to their inelastic behavior domain but inelastic analysis of structures are noncommercial and the capability of detail modeling of the inelastic behavior of the material is still impossible. Therefore, designers use response modification factor to consider the inelastic...

    Infilled-pipe damper

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 98 , July , 2014 , Pages 45-58 ; ISSN: 0143974X Maleki, S ; Mahjoubi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
This paper introduces a new passive control device for protecting structures against earthquakes. The device consists of two welded pipes which have two smaller pipes inside them and the spaces between the pipes are filled with metals such as lead or zinc. The device is loaded in shear and takes advantage of plastification of the outer pipes, the inner pipes and the infilled metals, and the friction between metals as energy absorption mechanisms. Quasi-static cyclic tests are performed on six specimens all showing stable hystereses and high damping. A finite element model is developed and calibrated against test results. The model is used to find the optimum sizes of pipes needed for a...

Seat width requirement for skewed bridges under seismic loads

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 5 , 2014 , pp. 1471-1479 ; ISSN: 10263098 Maleki, S ; Bagheri, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2014
    Abstract
In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of skewed bridges are explored analytically. Closed form solutions for translational and torsional periods of free vibration and mode shapes are given for slab-girder skewed bridges. Moreover, the seismic displacement of the deck of skewed bridges is calculated using the response spectrum method and its skew term is compared with the requirement of AASHTO. The effects of seismic force resisting elements, such as elastomeric bearings and end diaphragms are included. It is shown that the skew term in AASHTO's equation can underestimate the seat width requirement for some bridges. A new skew term for the bridge seat width requirement is suggested

Numerical study of Slotted-Web-Reduced-Flange moment connection

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 69, Issue 1 , February , 2012 , Pages 1-7 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Maleki, S ; Tabbakhha, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Reduced Beam Section (RBS) and Slotted Beam Web (SBW) are two types of seismic resistant moment connections that were introduced after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. These connections have been tested under cyclic loading and have had acceptable performance. In this paper, a new hybrid connection is introduced that is composed of RBS and SBW and is named Slotted-Web-Reduced- Flange (SWRF). Nonlinear finite element analyses are performed on SWRF under cyclic loading. It is shown that the new connection in some cases performs better than its RBS and SBW predecessors. The effects of panel zone strength, continuity plates and slot length are also investigated

    Dual-pipe damper

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 85 , 2013 , Pages 81-91 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Maleki, S ; Mahjoubi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this paper, a new passive earthquake energy dissipative device, called the dual-pipe damper (DPD), is introduced, tested and analytically studied. The device consists of two pipes welded at selected locations and loaded in shear. The inelastic cyclic deformation dissipates energy mainly through flexure of the pipe body. However, at large displacements a tension diagonal forms in the middle of the device which further adds to stiffness and strength. The strength, stiffness and energy dissipation of the DPD is more than two single pipe dampers that were previously studied. Cyclic quasi-static tests were performed on four samples of DPD. Excellent ductility, energy absorption and stable...
