Effect of the shear loading direction on shear behavior of rock and finding new empirical method for determining JRC by fractal dimension
, Article Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering 2007: Where the Road Ends, Ingenuity Begins, Yellowknife, NT, 6 June 2007 through 9 June 2007 ; Volume 1 , 2007 , Pages 259-267 ; Sadaghiani, M. H ; Askari, M ; Khosravi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Effect of different conditions on shear behaviour of rock has been investigated by various researchers. As known, in larger scale the continuity of the rock material is interrupted by separated planes such as bedding planes, faults, shear zones, closure and the behaviour converts to be inelastic and anisotropic. Generally, discontinuities appear repeatedly in more than one preferential direction, creating a three dimensional structure, reducing its stiffness and shear strength as mechanical effects and increasing its transport velocity associated with discontinuity flow as hydraulic effects. They also make rock behavior more complex and different compared to the behavior of soil. According...
On the formation of SWCNTs and MWCNTs by Arc-discharge in aqueous solutions: the role of iron charge and counter ions [electronic resource]
, Article Journal of Fullerenes, Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures ; 2011, Volume 19, Issue 4, Pages 317-328 ; Shervin, Sh ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized in aqueous solutions containing FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3. The effects of iron charge and the counter ions on the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that carbon multilayer structures including CNTs and multishell graphite particles were formed in deionized (DI) water without the iron precursor. SWCNTs were also synthesized in the presence of the iron ions. It was also found that the mole ratio of [Fe2+]/[Fe3+] in the solution has a significant influence on the purity of CNTs and the process yield. The highest yield was...

Abstract
Nowadays there are more than thirty maturity models in different knowledge areas. Maturity model is an area of interest that contributes organizations to find out where they are in a specific knowledge area and how to improve it. As Information Resource Management (IRM) is the concept that information is a major corporate resource and must be managed using the same basic principles used to manage other assets, assessment of the current IRM status and reveal the improvement points can play a critical role in developing an appropriate information structure in organizations. In this paper we proposed a framework for information resource management maturity model (IRM3) that includes ten best...

Abstract
This paper presents a new mechanism with unique and prominent features for a helical swimmer robot. "Double Helices Propulsion Mechanism" consists of two parallel helices with a single axis rotating in the same direction. The outer helix acts as the main propulsion component, and the inner helix, which is made of a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA), controls the forward velocity during swimming. This mechanism, by varying the geometrical parameters of its helical tail, can change the forward velocity of the helical swimmer robot that is required by its predefined missions. In order to study the effects of geometric parameters on the forward velocity in the single helical swimmer, a hydrodynamic model...

Abstract
Dynamic properties of soil, such as shear modulus and damping ratio, are necessary for analyzing the dynamic response of the soil in geostructures. This study investigates the effects of partially inherent anisotropy and stress-induced anisotropy on the shear stiffness of unsaturated soil through a series of dynamic hollow cylinder tests at medium strain levels. The different inherent anisotropy in tested sand specimens was introduced through different compaction water contents in the sample preparation stage while keeping the void ratio nearly constant. Moreover, the influences of the angle of maximum principal stress, α, and intermediate principal stress parameter, b = (σ2 − σ3)/(σ1 − σ3),...
Cosmological constant potential: a resolution to the hubble tension via the cosmological sound horizon
, Article Physical Review D ; Volume 110, Issue 6 , 2024 ; 24700010 (ISSN) ; Sharif University of Technology
2024
Abstract
The cosmological constant term can be seen as a constant potential for a (scalar) field. In this viewpoint, at late times, the field is stopped rolling and behaves as a cosmological constant (w=-1). While at the early Universe, its kinetic term can be dominant and behaves as a stiff fluid (w=+1). This new phase lowers the cosmological sound horizon by increasing the Hubble parameter for very high redshifts. Consequently, the lower cosmological sound horizon results in the higher Hubble constant at the present time. This early phase ends before the photon decoupling, so we do not expect any new physics after the last scattering surface. We checked this model in the presence of (reduced) CMB,...

Abstract
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a method to measure the efficiency of a DMU (Decision Making Unit, e.g. school, public agencies and banks). One of the ways for determining rank of DMUs is efficient score of each DMU. An interesting research issues is to discriminate between efficient DMUs. In literatures, supper efficiency is an applicable method for ranking efficient DMUs. The main drawback of this method is an inability of this method to rank non-extreme efficient DMUs. Therefore, this issue reduces the usefulness of this method. In this paper we propose a new ranking system for non-extreme efficient DMUs (Decision Making Units) based upon the omission of DMUs from reference set of the...
A polynomial time branch and bound algorithm for the single item economic lot sizing problem with all units discount and resale [electronic resource]
, Article International Journal of Optimization in Civil Engineering ; 2012, 2(2): 183-202 ; Shadrokh, Sh ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present a polynomial time algorithm which determines the lot sizes for purchase component in Material Requirement Planning (MRP) environments with deterministic time-phased demand with zero lead time. In this model, backlog is not permitted, the unit purchasing price is based on the all-units discount system and resale of the excess units is possible at the ordering time. The properties of an optimal order policy are argued and on the basis of them, a branch and bound algorithm is presented to construct an optimal sequence of order policies. In the proposed B&B algorithm, some useful fathoming rules have been proven to make the algorithm very efficient. By...

Abstract
In this study, the effects of pulse current parameters on corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of anodized coatings were evaluated. Hardness measurements, polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests were employed to investigate the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of these coatings. Also, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to analyze the surface morphology and microstructure of the coatings. It was found that the properties of anodized coatings were dependent on various parameters, among which, time, temperature and pulse current parameters (current density limit, frequency and duty cycle) were optimized. Abstract
Calculation of camera projection matrix, also called camera calibration, is an essential task in many computer vision and 3D data processing applications. Calculation of projection matrix using vanishing points and vanishing lines is well suited in the literature; where the intersection of parallel lines (in 3D Euclidean space) when projected on the camera image plane (by a perspective transformation) is called vanishing point and the intersection of two vanishing points (in the image plane) is called vanishing line. The aim of this paper is to propose a new formulation for easily computing the projection matrix based on three orthogonal vanishing points. It can also be used to calculate the...

Abstract
Novel types of highly swelling hydrogels were prepared by grafting crosslinked polyacrylamide-co-poly-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (PAAm-co-PAMPS) chains onto sodium alginate (Na-Alg) through a free radical polymerization method. The superabsorbent formation was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR). The controlled release behavior of diclofenac sodium (DS) from superabsorbent polymer was factinvestigated, and shown that the release profiles of DS from superabsorbent polymer were slow in simulated gastric fluid (SGF, pH 1.2) over 3 h, but nearly all of the initial drug content was released in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 7.4) within 21 h after...

Abstract
Novel types of highly swelling hydrogels were prepared by grafting crosslinked polyacrylic acid-co-poly-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (PAA-co-PAMPS) chains onto κ-carrageenan through a free radical polymerization method. Here, we propose a mechanism for κ-carrageenan-g-PAA-co-PAMPS formation and confirm the hydrogel structure using FTIR spectroscopy. The effect of grafting variables (i.e. concentration of methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), acrylic acid/-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AA/AMPS) weight ratio, ammonium persulfate (APS), κ-carrageenan, neutralization percent and reaction temperature) were systematically optimized to achieve a hydrogel with a maximum swelling...

Abstract
The subject of the present paper is the investigation of the sharp edged gust effects on the aeroelastic behavior of a flexible wing. It is important to determine the response of the wing to the atmospheric turbulences during normal flight. So, linear modal analysis technique and linear quasi-steady aerodynamic are used for structural modeling and aerodynamic loading, respectively. Also, Lagrange method is used to obtain the system of equations of motion. Using the normal modes of free vibration, structural and aerodynamic matrices can be constructed. Then the aeroelastic instability of the system is determined using p method. Kussner function is used to model the sharp gust effects on the...

Abstract
In dealing with human nervous system, the sensation of pain is as sophisticated as other physiological phenomena. To obtain an acceptable model of the pain, physiology of the pain has been analysed in the present paper. Pain mechanisms are explained in block diagram representation form. Because of the nonlinear interactions existing among different sections in the diagram, artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been exploited. The basic patterns associated with chronic and acute pain have been collected and then used to obtain proper features for training the neural networks. Both static and dynamic representations of the ANNs were used in this regard. The trained networks then were employed...

Abstract
This letter investigates the deterministic design of pilot power and pattern for sparse channel estimation in OFDM systems based on minimizing the coherence of the DFT sub-matrix. It has been suggested that the pilot pattern forming a cyclic difference set (CDS) or almost difference set (ADS) is optimal. So, we proposed a deterministic procedure that jointly optimized for pattern and power of pilots as a solution. First, pilot patterns forming CDS/ADS were gathered through a search. Then, the power was numerically allocated to the different pilots from all the patterns. Finally, the pilot pattern and power pair leading to minimum coherence was selected from the available pairs. Simulation...

Abstract
In this paper, the problem of finding the shortest path between two points in the presence of single-point visibility constraints is studied, In these types of constraint, there should be at least one point on the output path from which a fixed viewpoint is visible. The problem is studied in various domains, including simple polygons, polygonal domains and polyhedral surfaces. The method is based on partitioning the boundary of the visibility region of the viewpoint into a number of intervals. This is done from the combinatorial structure of the shortest paths from the source and destination to the points on the boundary. The result for the case of simple polygons is optimal with O(n) time...
Query-point visibility constrained shortest paths in simple polygons
, Article Theoretical Computer Science ; Volume 389, Issue 1-2 , 2007 , Pages 1-11 ; 03043975 (ISSN) ; Ghodsi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
In this paper, we study the problem of finding the shortest path between two points inside a simple polygon such that there is at least one point on the path from which a query point is visible. We provide an algorithm which preprocesses the input in O (n2 + n K) time and space and provides logarithmic query time. The input polygon has n vertices and K is a parameter dependent on the input polygon which is O (n2) in the worst case but is much smaller for most polygons. The preprocessing algorithm sweeps an angular interval around every reflex vertex of the polygon to store the optimal contact points between the shortest paths and the windows separating the visibility polygons of the query...

Abstract
We study a constrained version of the shortest path problem in simple polygons, in which the path must visit a given target polygon. We provide a worst-case optimal algorithm for this problem and also present a method to construct a subdivision of the simple polygon to efficiently answer queries to retrieve the shortest polygon-meeting paths from a single-source to the query point. The algorithms are linear, both in time and space, in terms of the complexity of the two polygons. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Abstract
Computing the period of the periodic functions is the main reason of using Simon’s algorithm to attack symmetric-key cryptographic primitives. However, if the target function does not satisfy Simon’s promise completely or if the number of superposition queries of the adversary is limited, Simon’s algorithm cannot compute the actual target period, unambiguously. These problems may lead to the failure of period-finding-based quantum attacks. Our main aim in this paper is to relax Simon’s algorithm so that quantum adversaries can still carry out the mentioned attacks without any assumptions (Simon’s promise) on the target function. To that end, we use two different methods, each of which is...
