H∞ optimum design and nonlinear seismic performance assessment of tuned-mass-damper-inerter (TMDI) supported by an auxiliary structure
, Article Structures ; Volume 69 , 2024 ; 23520124 (ISSN) ; Rofooei, F. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2024
Abstract
Tuned Mass Damper Inerter (TMDI) and its simplified form, Tuned Inerter Damper (TID), are highly effective in mitigating seismic responses in buildings, particularly when rigidly connected to the ground. However, practical constraints often limit the feasibility of this ideal setup. This study introduces a novel configuration: the AS-type TMDI, which connects the TMDI to an auxiliary structure (AS) adjacent to the main building to simulate a ground connection. To design the AS-type TMDI, this research builds upon insights from studies on TMDIs in adjacent buildings and develops an analogous 3-DOF model representing the TMDI-linked adjacent-building system. This model incorporates two...
Designing market-based control with a genetic algorithm
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, Issue. 6 , 2014 ; ISSN: 10263098 ; Amini, F ; Sharif University of Technology
2014
Abstract
Semi-active devices are low-cost as well as small and by changing the properties of low-power intensive structures, the aims of control are accomplished. On the other hand, the limited control force which can be applied to the structure for each damper causes more dampers to be used in the structures compared to the larger and stronger control devices which are more costly. These dampers coupled with sensors and the structure themselves make a complex dynamic system which is best controlled by a decentralized method such as Market-Based Control (MBC). In MBC, the actuators and the supply energy are modeled as buyer and seller respectively in the market place. To define the demand function of...

The Performance of Unconventional Tuned Mass Dampers Designed by Hybrid Genetic Algorithm & Pattern Search in Structures with Nonlinear Behavior
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofouei, Fayyaz (Supervisor)
Abstract
Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is one of the most popular device implemented in structures in order to control the motion induced by wind. The performance of TMD has correlation with its design, which is depending on the Structure dynamic properties as well as the specifications of lateral loading. During the earthquake since the both of the mentioned parameters will be uncertain, hence, the reduction of TMD’s sensitivity to its design parameters is vital. In this regard, in 2012, Maurizio De Angelis et al. tested the unconventional TMD – it has a large mass ratio – and corroborated its merit. The results were limited to short structures with linear behavior. This research not only verified...
Application of Inerter in Reducing the Seismic Response of Structures Equipped With Tuned Mass Damper
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
Abstract
The tuned mass dampers (TMD) are being used more often in structures to control the wind-induced vibrations. However, their performance during an earthquake deteriorates due to a relatively wide frequency bandwidth of seismic input as well as nonlinear structural behavior. Increasing the mass of TMD to enhance its performance whilst reducing its sensitivity to detuning has its own limitation in terms of deploying large masses at usually the roof level of the building structures. In that regard, the researchers have employed the inerter, a mechanical device that is able to produce relatively large moment of inertias with a relatively small mass of flywheel, to improve the performance of the...

Abstract
A central problem in motor control is to understand how the many biomechanical degrees of freedom are coordinated to achieve a goal. A common assumption is that Central Nervous System (CNS) would minimize a performance index to achieve this goal which is called objective function. In this paper, two popular objective functions are utilized to design the optimal trajectory of trunk movements. A 3D computational method incorporated with 18 anatomically oriented muscles is used to simulate human trunk system. Inverse dynamics allows us to compute torque which is generated around Lumbosacral joint. This torque is divided among muscles by static stability-based optimization. Trunk movement from...

Abstract
A central problem in motor control is to understand how the many biomechanical degrees of freedom are coordinated to achieve a goal. A common assumption is that Central Nervous System (CNS) will plan tasks based on open-loop optimal control theory which simultaneously predicts state variables and motor commands based on a compound objective function. A 3D computational method incorporated with 18 anatomically oriented muscles is used to simulate human trunk system. Direct collocation method allows us to convert a constrained optimal control problem to a common nonlinear programming problem to assume the spinal stability condition. Trunk movement from the upright standing to 60 degrees of...

Abstract
Developing a computational model for studying tribological performance is essential for computing accurate life cycle of various materials. Caused by the existence of complicated and nonlinear interactions between material surfaces, exact modeling of wear behavior is very difficult. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in distinguishing similar patterns in experimental data and predictive modeling of a certain material’s wear behavior. In this paper, artificial neural networks (ANNs) approach, adaptive neural-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) technique, and fuzzy clustering method (FCM) are used to develop a simple, accurate, and applicable model for predicting the wear behavior of...

Abstract
In this study, microstructural aspects that control fracture and deformation resistance of P/M materials are evaluated. Several low-alloy steels were produced under both experimental and commercial conditions for achieving different matrix phases and porosity levels with varying shape factors. A 'porosity map' was constructed and used for a quantified study of the dominant mechanism controlling mechanical behaviors. The role of inclusion gathering and secondary pores, as well as sintering mechanism and alloying method is considered and discussed. The mechanism assessment was performed by using microstructure examination through optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results...

Abstract
The influence of manufacturing parameters such as compacting pressure, heat treatment and microstructure on the static and dynamic properties of Fe-1.75 Ni-1.5 Cu-0.5 Mo-0.6 C was investigated. Wear and fatigue tests were carried out on reciprocate wearing and tension compression mode, respectively. The results show that delamination wear mechanism of sintered steel is similar to that of conventional wrought or cast materials. But, in sintered material, open porosity acts as sites of generation and collection of wear debris or formation of subsurface cracks. Wear rate is decreased and fatigue strength is increased by heat treatment. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

Abstract
Modeling and analysis of information system vulnerabilities helps us to predict possible attacks to networks using the network configuration and vulnerabilities information. As a fact, exploiting most of vulnerabilities result in access rights alteration. In this paper, we propose a new vulnerability analysis method based on the Take-Grant protection model. We extend the initial Take-Grant model to address the notion of vulnerabilities and introduce the vulnerabilities rewriting rules to specify how the protection state of the system can be changed by exploiting vulnerabilities. Our analysis is based on a bounded polynomial algorithm, which generates the closure of the Take-Grant graph...
Sequence dependence of the binding energy in chaperone-driven polymer translocation through a nanopore
, Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 83, Issue 1 , January , 2011 ; 15393755 (ISSN) ; Ejtehadi, M. R ; Metzler, R ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
We study the translocation of stiff polymers through a nanopore, driven by the chemical-potential gradient exerted by binding proteins (chaperones) on the trans side of the pore. Bound chaperones prevent backsliding through the pore and, therefore, partially rectify the polymer passage. We show that the sequence of chain monomers with different binding affinity for the chaperones significantly affects the translocation dynamics. In particular, we investigate the effect of the nearest-neighbor adjacency probability of the two monomer types. Depending on the magnitude of the involved binding energies, the translocation speed may either increase or decrease with the adjacency probability. We...

Abstract
Combining the advection-diffusion equation approach with Monte Carlo simulations we study chaperone driven polymer translocation of a stiff polymer through a nanopore. We demonstrate that the probability density function of first passage times across the pore depends solely on the Péclet number, a dimensionless parameter comparing drift strength and diffusivity. Moreover it is shown that the characteristic exponent in the power-law dependence of the translocation time on the chain length, a function of the chaperone-polymer binding energy, the chaperone concentration, and the chain length, is also effectively determined by the Péclet number. We investigate the effect of the chaperone size on...

Abstract
The amount of rippling in graphene sheets is related to the interactions with the substrate or with the suspending structure. Here, we report on an irreversibility in the response to forces that act on suspended graphene sheets. This may explain why one always observes a ripple structure on suspended graphene. We show that a compression-relaxation mechanism produces static ripples on graphene sheets and determine a peculiar temperature Tc, such that for T
