Abstract
X-ray diffraction and rheological measurements were used to characterize nanoparticle dispersion in LDPE/LLDPE/nanoclay hybrid nanocomposites. XRD patterns were interpreted with a novel distribution formula and rheological measurements were used to confirm the results. Results of these two methods indicated that increasing clay in all the prepared nanocomposites exhibited a significant improvement in filler-matrix interaction because of increasing the probability of polymer diffusion but further exfoliation need more compatibilizing situations. It seems that this mathematical method could be used for predicting the overall change in clay gallery d-spacing and the extent of...
Impermeability of Oxygen in Passive/Active Polyethylene Nanocomposite Films
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, polyethylene films made of LDPE / LLPE / reinforced with mechanical barrier of clay and reactant of iron nanoparticles were made in their optimal combination and necessary improvements were made on them. Investigations show that, independent of volume fraction, the addition of spherical nanoparticles does not have much effect on reducing the polymer matrix’s permeability. In nanocomposites containing cylindrical particles, for considerable reduction of the permeability, over 20 volume percent of nanoparticles it is required, while in platelet nanoparticles, less than 10% vol is sufficient. In clays with modifier concentration above the cation exchange capacity, there is less...

Abstract
According to the great potential of zero-valent iron nanoparticle applications in the environmental, medical, chemical, packaging and many other industries, there is still a need to tailor their production methods. This study reports the production of a hybrid nanostructure based on iron nanoparticles (INPs) produced in/on montmorillonite (MMT) nanoclays as an oxygen scavenger and barrier additive in polymeric packaging materials of oxygen-sensitive products. INPs and MMT were demonstrated to have effective mutual interactions in which the MMT host played a chemophysical trapping role for iron particles, causing smaller particles around 10 nm with 6.2 g/m2 higher specific surface area by...

Abstract
In this work, polyolefin-blend/clay nanocomposites based on low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and organically modified clay (OC) were prepared by melt extrusion. Various grades of maleic anhydride (MA) grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MA) were used and examined as compatibilizers in these nanocomposites. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis showed that OC and compatibilizer affect the crystallization behavior of LDPE/LLDPE with different mechanisms. Thermodynamic calculations of wetting coefficient based on interfacial energy between OC, LD, and LL, Morphological characterization based on field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction,...
A new gibbs energy model for obtaining thermophysical properties of aqueous electrolyte solutions

Abstract
In this paper, a new Gibbs energy model is proposed to study the thermophysical properties of aqueous electrolyte solutions at various temperatures. The proposed model assumes that the electrolytes completely dissociate in solution. The model also has two temperature-independent adjustable parameters that were regressed using experimental values of the mean ionic activity coefficients (MIAC) for 87 electrolyte solutions at 298.15 K. Results from the proposed model for the MIAC were compared with those obtained from the E-Wilson, E-NRTL, Pitzer and the E-UNIQUAC models, and the adjustable model parameters were used directly to predict the osmotic coefficients at this temperature. The results...
Measurement and modeling process partitioning of cephalexin antibiotic in aqueous two-phase systems containing poly(ethylene glycol) 4000, 10000 and K2HPO4, Na3Citrate

Abstract
In this work, the partition coefficients of Cephalexin in aqueous two-phase systems containing PEG [poly(ethylene glycol)] 4000, 10000 and K 2HPO4, Na3Citrate (C6H 5Na3O7 5, 5H2O) have been measured. The experimental data were obtained in a wide range of temperatures, (28.2 to 37.2) °C. The effects of temperature, pH, polymer concentration, polymer molecular weight, and salt concentration on the partitioning of Cephalexin were also studied. The results showed that salt concentration has a large effect on the partition coefficient, and temperature has an almost negligible effect. The Chen-NRTL Gibbs energy model was used to correlate the experimental results. © 2009 American Chemical Society

Abstract
The aqueous two phase systems provide a suitable environment for separation and purification of biological compounds. Because both phases are water rich and biomolecule remain active in them. In this work, the partition coefficients of Cephalexin in polymer-salt aqueous two-phase systems have been measured. The experimental results were obtained at three various temperatures (37.2, 34.2 and 28.2) C and in each temperature, two salt (K2HPO4, Na3Cit) and two polymer with different molecular weight (4000, 10000) are investigated. According to the two phase analysis, the effect of different factors on tie line of systems is studied. It is observed that with increasing the PEG molecular weight,...
