    , Article Poromechanics 2017 - Proceedings of the 6th Biot Conference on Poromechanics, 9 July 2017 through 13 July 2017 ; 2017 , Pages 2027-2034 ; 9780784480779 (ISBN) Vahab, M ; Khoei, A. R ; Khalili, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2017
    Abstract
In this paper, a coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is developed for the simulation of interaction between hydraulic fractures and natural discontinuities within saturated porous media. The momentum balance equation of the bulk together with the momentum balance and continuity equations of the fluid phase are employed to obtain the fully coupled set of governing equations. The hydro-fracture is modeled for fluid flow using the Darcy law. The natural discontinuity on the other hand is modeled for both opening and closing modes which induce fluid flow and/or contact behavior along the crack edges. The discontinuity in the displacement field is incorporated by using the Heaviside enrichment...

An X-FEM technique in modeling hydro-fracture interaction with naturally-cemented faults

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 212 , 2019 , Pages 269-290 ; 00137944 (ISSN) Vahab, M ; Khoei, A. R ; Khalili, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, an enriched finite element method is presented to model the interaction between the hydraulically-driven fracture and the pre-existing naturally-cemented fault within an impermeable domain. The inflow and continuity equations of the fluid phase are solved throughout the discontinuities in conjunction with the momentum balance equation of the bulk using a sequential manner based on the staggered Newton algorithm. The frictional contact behavior along the overlapped zone of the naturally-cemented fault is modeled through the extended–FEM penalty scheme. The effect of cementation bond along the natural fault is incorporated employing a modified Coulomb law to derive the...

    , Article ICCAS 2010 - International Conference on Control, Automation and Systems, 27 October 2010 through 30 October 2010, Gyeonggi-do ; 2010 , Pages 286-289 ; 9781424474530 (ISBN) Khalili, M ; Haeri, M ; Doodman Tipi, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In the welding process, droplet detachment regularity is important for a good welding quality. The frequency of detachment is one of influential indices for assessing the quality of GMAW in the globular transfer mode. In this paper, a relationship is estimated for measuring droplet detachment frequency in the globular GMAW. The droplet detachment frequency is estimated with a curve fitting by the least squares error (LSE) method. By using short time frequency transform (STFT) we can extract the frequency contents from the mass of drop that is one of the states in the welding model

    Abstract
In this paper, a computational model is developed for the simulation of hydro-fracture growth in naturally layered impervious media using the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The equilibrium equation of the bulk is solved in conjunction with the hydro-fracture inflow and continuity equations using the staggered Newton method. The hydro-fracture inflow is governed by the lubrication theory, where the permeability of the fracture is incorporated by taking advantage of the cubic law. The Eigen-function expansion method is utilised in order to develop enrichment functions suited for the asymptotic stress field in the vicinity of the singular points. An energy release rate-based criterion...

    Abstract
In this paper, a novel moving object modeling suitable for multicamera correspondence is introduced. Taking into consideration the color and motion features of foreground objects in each independent video stream, our method segments the existing moving objects and constructs a graph-based structure to maintain the relational information of each segment. Using such graph structures reduces our correspondence problem to a subgraph optimal isomorphism problem. The proposed method is robust against various resolutions and orientations of objects at each view. Our system uses the fuzzy logic to employ a human-like color perception in its decision making stage in order to handle color inconstancy...

Bi-objective resource constrained project scheduling problem with makespan and net present value criteria: Two meta-heuristic algorithms

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 69, Issue 1-4 , 2013 , Pages 617-626 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Khalili, S ; Najafi, A. A ; Niaki, S.T. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Traditionally, the model of a resource-constrained project-scheduling problem (RCPSP) contains a single objective function of either minimizing project makespan or maximizing project net present value (NPV). In order to be more realistic, in this paper, two multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms of multi-population and two-phase sub-population genetic algorithms are proposed to find Pareto front solutions that minimize the project makespan and maximize the project NPV of a RCPSP, simultaneously. Based on standard test problems constructed by the RanGen project generator, a comprehensive computational experiment is performed, where response surface methodology is employed to tune the...

    Abstract
The effects of geometrical scaling on a supersonic external compression axisymmetric inlet are investigated. Various lower and higher geometrical scales of supersonic inlet are considered as the case studies. The inlet flow is simulated numerically using RANS solver along with the SST k-w turbulence model. The numerical results are in an acceptable agreement with the NACA experimental data at free stream Mach number of 1.79 and at zero angle of attack. The results show that the static pressure distribution of the inlet flow experiences some differences for various scales especially at the regions of the flow entrance and throat area. The mean flow Mach number and the mass flow rate at the...

Study the effect of architectural modification on fracture behavior of Al-DRA composite [electronic resource]

    , Article Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures ; September 2014, Volume 21, Issue 8, pages 662-668 Jamali, M ; Khalili, S ; Bagheri, R ; Simchi, A. (Abdolreza) ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
An architectural modification method was utilized to improve fracture toughness of discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA) composites. Al-DRA composites having a structure similar to that of reinforced concrete were fabricated. The number of reinforcing DRA rods within Al matrix and volume fraction of SiC particles in DRA were altered to evaluate their effect on fracture behavior of these materials. It was found that architectural modification does not have any destructive influence on elastic modulus and yield strength of the composite. Moreover, the success of this method on toughness improvement strongly depends on the occurrence of debonding between Al and DRA regions upon loading

    Abstract
Topic detection is the task of determining and tracking hot topics in social media. Twitter is arguably the most popular platform for people to share their ideas with others about different issues. One such prevalent issue is the COVID-19 pandemic. Detecting and tracking topics on these kinds of issues would help governments and healthcare companies deal with this phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a novel, multi-agent, communicative clustering approach, so-called ComStreamClust for clustering sub-topics inside a broader topic, e.g., the COVID-19 and the FA CUP. The proposed approach is parallelizable, and can simultaneously handle several data-point. The LaBSE sentence embedding is used...

    Abstract
Immiscible gas injection is one of the most common enhanced oil recovery methods used under various reservoir conditions. In this work, the immiscible recycle gas injection, as an EOR scenario for improving recovery efficiency in one of the south-west Iranian oil reservoirs, is simulated by a commercial simulator, ECLIPSE. The reservoir fluid is light oil, with an API of 43. The oil bearing formations are carbonate, and so a dual porosity/dual permeability behavior was chosen for better representation of the fracture system. Different sensitivity analyses with respect to several parameters like the number and location of injection/production wells, production/injection rate, completion...
