    , Article IEEE Sensors Journal ; Volume 23, Issue 17 , 2023 , Pages 19176-19183 ; 1530437X (ISSN) Khajueezadeh, M. S ; Tootoonchian, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Reliability and fault tolerability of the resolvers, as the first-choice rotor angle sensor in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), are big concerns. Among the resolver categories, the assessment of axial and radial flux resolvers over each other is an interesting subject, which will serve as a guideline for engineering society. On the other hand, resolver errors will significantly degrade the drive system and primary motor operating conditions, injecting more stress into the motor. Therefore, it is clear that the resolver's faulty conditions can lead to thermal changes in PMSM, which shows the connection between the frequency of resolver faults and the heat level of the motor frame....

    Abstract
Similar to each electromagnetic device, resolvers' design and performance investigation through an accurate and preferably fast tool are necessary. On the other hand, due to the 3-D geometry of the sinusoidal area (SA) linear resolver, its performance evaluation and iterative design procedure is a big challenge, especially through 3-D time-stepping finite element analysis (3D-TSFEA) and common analytical methods. Accordingly, the following study suggests a hybrid linear resolver model to overcome the above challenges. The suggested hybrid linear model can precisely consider the longitudinal end effect and faulty resolver conditions. In addition, implementing the suggested hybrid model in...

    Abstract
High-efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are widely used in industrial applications. Subsequently, resolvers as position sensors experience increasing usage in the drive of PMSMs. Measuring the rotor's position using a resolver needs a costly Resolver to Digital Converter (RDC). Therefore, in this paper, a software-based, low-cost RDC is presented against the conventional Angle Tracking Observers (ATOs). The proposed RDC is a high-Accuracy two-stage Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based one. In this regard, an overview of the resolvers' function and the general methodology to DNN training is given. Then, the case study is done on the gathered data from the set of the resolver...

Analysis of torsional vibrations on the resolver under eccentricity in pmsm drive system

    , Article IEEE Sensors Journal ; Volume 22, Issue 22 , 2022 , Pages 21592-21599 ; 1530437X (ISSN) Khajueezadeh, M. S ; Feizhoseini, S ; Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Behzad, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Since any error in the rotor angle caused by the resolver affects the entire permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) control drive system, it is necessary to investigate its effect on mechanical vibrations. Torsional vibration is accordingly considered in the following study. Thereby, first, the effect of resolver errors on the harmonic content of motor current and, subsequently, torque ripple (TR) was investigated. Then, dynamical modeling is done for the generator-motor-resolver set to get the mechanical frequency response (FR) resulting from the resolver errors. Based on the above modeling, the dynamic equations (DEQs) of the system were derived, and the mechanical characteristics of...

    Abstract
Accurate position feedback from a resolver is highly critical for high-performance field-oriented control (FOC) drives, and eccentricity in resolvers negatively affects the drive performance. The current unbalance intensity (CUI) of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) is a known criterion to evaluate drive stability and can be caused by position feedback error. In this article, the eccentric resolver operation is comprehensively investigated, and the corresponding CUI is analytically evaluated. Accordingly, the error limit is defined for an acceptable operation under eccentricity without derating the motor control. For this purpose, the relationship between the: 1) resolver's...

    Abstract
Resolver is an electromagnetic position sensor typically used in the closed-loop control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). In terms of structure and principle of operation, resolvers are very similar to electrical machines. In this regard, different numerical and analytical models have been developed for the performance prediction of a resolver, with a compromise between computational burden and accuracy. Therefore, a fast and accurate hybrid model of the resolver is presented in this article, which can be used for resolvers with different structures. Additionally, this model can easily be implemented in software such as MATLAB/SIMULINK. The performance of different variable...

    Abstract
The existence of resolvers in the two degree of freedom (2DOF) control algorithm is mandatory due to their improved performance in harsh environments. However, resolver's errors significantly influence the control system's stability. Therefore, it is required to comprehensively investigate the resolver's reliability under fault conditions. In this regard, an employed assessment model is presented. Subsequently, the failure modes in the 2DOF and one degree of freedom (1DOF) resolvers' configurations are investigated thoroughly. Among the methods used to assess reliability, the Markov model is chosen for the reliability analyses. After meeting all of the above, the faulty conditions are...

Position Error of Resolver in a Closed Loop Control

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khajueezadeh Ravari, Mohammad Sadegh (Author) ; Nasiri Gheidari, Zahra (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) are more conventional and widely employed in Electric Vehicles (EVs) applications. The rotor position performed an essential role through PMSMs drive; therefore, any deviation in the detected position will be evaded in coordinate transformations, originating from external or inherence sources. Subsequently, the discussed faults will be conducted to three-phase currents and output torque through erroneous transformations. Resolver’s estimated rotor position due to fault occurrence will be defined as aggregating ideal and non-ideal components. Moreover, based on inherence periodic in resolvers’ principle, non-ideal components could be written by the...

    Abstract
Using multiple antennas at the transmit and receive sides of a passive radar brings both the benefits of MIMO radar and passive radar. However one of the obstacles arisen in such configuration is the receive antennas placement in proper positions so that the radar performance is improved. Here we just consider the case of positioning one receiver among multiple illuminators of opportunity. Indeed it is a start for the solution of optimizing the geometry of the multiple receivers in a passive radar

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system with wireless power transfer (WPT) where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based radar serves a group of energy-limited communication users in addition to its sensing functionality. In this architecture, the radar senses the environment in phase 1 (namely sensing phase) and mean-while, the communications users (nodes) harvest and store the energy from the radar transmit signal. The stored energy is then used for information transmission from the nodes to UAV in phase 2, i.e., uplink phase. Performance of the radar system depends on the transmit signal as well as the receive filter; the energy of the transmit...

    Abstract
One of the important obstacles in MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) radars is the issue of designing proper transmit signals. Indeed, the capability of signal design is a significant advantage in MIMO radars, through which, the system can achieve much better performance. Many different aspects of this performance improvement have been considered yet, and the transmit signals have been designed to attain such goal, e.g., getting higher SNR or better detector's performance at the receiver. However, an important tool for evaluating the radar's performance is its ambiguity function. In this paper, we consider the problem of transmit signal design, in order to optimize the ambiguity function...

    Detection-localization tradeoff in MIMO radars

    Abstract
Two gains play key roles in recently developed MIMO wireless communication systems: "spatial diversity" gain and "spatial multiplexing" gain. The diversity gain refers to the capability to decrease the error rate of the MIMO channel, while the multiplexing gain implicitly refers to the amount of increase in the capacity of the MIMO channel. It has been shown that there is a fundamental tradeoff between these two types of gains, meaning interplay between increasing reliability (via an increase in the diversity gain) and increasing data rate (via an increase in the multiplexing gain). On the other hand, recently, MIMO radars have attracted much attention for their superior ability to enhance...

Antenna placement and power allocation optimization in MIMO detection

    Abstract
It is a well known fact that using multiple antennas at transmit and receive sides improves the detection performance. However, in such multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration, proper positioning of transmitters and receivers is a big challenge that can have significant influence on the performance of the overall system. In addition, determining the power of each transmitter under a total power constraint is a problem that should be solved in order to enhance the performance and coverage of such a system. In this paper, we design the Neyman-Pearson detector under the Rayleigh scatter model and use it to introduce a criterion for the antenna placement at both transmit and receive...

Ambiguity function of MIMO radar with widely separated antennas

    Abstract
There has been much interest, recently, towards exploiting the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technique in radar. It is shown that using multiple antennas at transmit and receive sides can improve the performance of the system. However, in order to analyze the system's performance, its ambiguity function, i.e. the ambiguity function of a MIMO radar, is needed to be defined. In this paper, beginning from the information theoretic definitions, we derive such function, specifically for a MIMO radar with widely separated antennas

    Abstract
By combining the two ideas of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and PCL (Passive Coherent Location) in radar, one can achieve the advantages of both recently developed techniques simultaneously. While using multiple antennas at the receive side provides a spatial diversity of the object to be detected, using multiple illuminators of opportunity, most importantly, makes the radar covert to the interceptors. One obstacle in such MIMO configuration is choosing the positions of the receive antennas. In this paper, after analyzing the Neyman-Pearson detector for the DVB-T based PCL, we introduce the probability of missed detection as a criterion to place the receive antenna. Here, we only...

    Abstract
It has been shown that using multiple antennas in a radar system improves the performance considerably, since multiple target echoes are received from different aspect angles of the target. In this way, the target detection is improved. However, when using multiple antennas, some problems, such as designing the transmit signals, synchronization, etc. emerge that should be solved. One of such problems is the receiver placement. Receiver placement deals with choosing a proper position for the receive antenna in order to optimize the whole system's performance. In this paper, a receiver placement procedure based on improving the radar ambiguity function is proposed for the case of a multisite...

    Abstract
By employing the MIMO (multiple-input-multiple-output) technology in radar, some new problems emerged, that, in order to benefit the MIMO gains in radar, it was necessary to solve them suitably. One of such obstacles is determining the positions of receive antennas in a MIMO radar system with widely separated antennas (WS MIMO radar), since it is shown that the antennas' positions affect the whole system's performance considerably. In this study, a proper receivers' positioning procedure is proposed. To do this end, four criteria are developed based on the proposed MIMO detector and the MIMO ambiguity function. The simulations verify that the proposed positioning procedure improves the...
