Cooperative Spectrum Sensing Based on Learning Techniques for 5G Mobile Communication Networks
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behroozi, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, with the continuous growth and development of wireless communication systems, the demand for the use of radio spectrum has increased significantly, which has led to problems such as a shortage of spectrum. An effective solution to the spectrum shortage problem is to use cognitive radio. One of the main functions of cognitive radio networks is spectrum sensing and our focus in this study is to examine machine learning and deep learning methods to improve cooperative spectrum sensing. Since channel and noise parameters are not accurate in telecommunication systems, we need to use a method to estimate these parameters. In this regard, the structure of Bayesian with neural...

Abstract
Fast and accurate methods for spectrum sensing (SS) are the key elements in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) that achieve high SS. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning (RL) scheme for secondary users (SUs) in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) CRN to determine occupation and emptiness of scanned wideband channels. In the proposed H-learning method, the clustered neighboring SUs collect data to check the status of channels that improve reliability of measured sensing. Then, they share information about different frequency channels with other clusters and the status of channel occupation is determined for all SUs. This model-based learning method increases finding free...

Abstract
Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a very interesting nano-scale technology. Extremely small feature size and ultra-low power consumption are the most important features of QCA compared to CMOS. Counters are considered as one of the most fundamental components in sequential circuits. Previous QCA synchronous counters (QSCs) have been designed and simulated using two methods. In the first method, QSCs utilize direct mapping flip-flop designs in CMOS technology to QCA. In the second method, QSCs are designed with the inherent capability of QCA technology. Despite being attractive, mentioned approaches have constraints (i.e. long wire length and area issues). In this brief, design and...
Transient simulations of cavitating flows using a modified volume-of-fluid (VOF) technique

Abstract
In this study, transient 2D/axisymmetric simulations of cavitating flows are performed using a modified 'Volume-of-Fluid' (VOF) technique. Simulation of the cavitation is based on a homogenous equilibrium flow model. To predict the shape of the cavity, the Navier-Stokes equations in addition to an advection equation for the liquid volume fraction are solved. Mass transfer between the phases is treated as a sink term in the VOF equation. The numerical method is used for different geometries in a wide range of cavitation numbers. Computed shapes of cavities were found to be in good agreement with those of the reported experiments. The simulation results also compared well with those obtained...

Abstract
Polymorphism and dynamic binding of processing units to methods are key features in object-oriented (OO) processors. Since Network-on-Chip is not available for most platform implementation, common bus can be a good approach to interconnect processing units of an OO processor. In this paper, we present a network protocol with little overhead for common bus that does not violate the polymorphism method calls in an OO processor. Moreover, we show the appropriateness of our solution by presenting a real-world application. © 2008 Springer-Verlag

Abstract
Detailed investigation of the time-scale and the combined effect of fluid-rock and fluid-fluid phenomena in low-salinity enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is essential to gain fundamental understanding of the efficiency of oil recovery by this method. By focusing on a brine-oil-quartz system and developing fit-for-purpose methods and apparatus, we performed microfluidic flooding experiments to study this as a function of salinity. Brines made of single monovalent or divalent salts were considered to identify the most potent brines for micromodel flooding experiments. The results of the microfluidic experiments reveal that the oil recovery factor by injection of brine containing sodium chloride...
Experimental Study of Two-Phase Slug Flow in Rectangular Tunnls with Adverse Slope
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Slug Flow is one of the most important schemes of two-phase air/water flow, which is quite complex and quite different to a single-phase flow. Also one of the common water conveyance systems is a rectangular tunnel which may have adverse slope at some parts of the tunnel. In this study the hydraulic of slug flow in rectangular tunnels with variable slope from horizontal to adverse have been considered using experimental setup. About 150 tests were carried out for different air/water discharge ratios and adverse slopes, and dynamic pressure fluctuations together with the slug period were measured. It was observed that the pressure fluctuations increase as the air to water ratio increases and...

Micromodel Investigation of the Non-Monotonic Effect of Injection Water Salinity on Wettability and Oil Recovery
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahani, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Based on numerous laboratory and field evidence, low-salinity waterflooding or engineered salinity waterflooding can lead to enhanced oil production. According to the literature, the mechanisms involved in this process can be divided into two general categories: fluid-fluid interactions and solid-liquid interactions. These mechanisms are caused by intermolecular and electrostatic forces at the rock and fluid interfaces. The most important controlling factor of the electrostatic forces is the concentration of ions at/near fluids-rock interface. Therefore, improving the concentration of ions causes a shift in wettability toward a more water-wetting state, eventually leading to increased oil...

Abstract
In many synchronous digital systems especially those used in mobile applications, the system is exposed to sever shaking that may lead to a failure in the clock generator. In this paper we present an effective method to tolerate the faults on the clock signal that are due to defects in external oscillators. Our technique utilizes no Phase-Lock Loops (PLL), no Delay-Locked Loops (DLL) and no high frequency oscillators because of their drawbacks so that it needs neither more effort to meet Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) and requirements nor extra hardware to implement DLLs. We have formally evaluated the meta-stability of our technique. This evaluation shows that our technique reliably...
Designing an Efficient Non-Volatile Approximate Main Memory Through Managing the Write Process
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Memories today expose an all-or-nothing correctness model thatincurs significant costs in performance, energy, area, and designcomplexity. But not all applications need high-precision storagefor all of their data structures all of the time. This these proposesmechan-isms that enable applications to store data approximately in a phase change memory main memoryand shows that doing so can improve the performance and reduce the power consumption by proposing two mechanisms. The First allows errors in multi-level cells by reducing the number ofprogramming pulses used to write them. The second mechanism reduces the number of error-prone patterns in the content of data block through a lightweith...
Hybrid control of DC-DC series resonant converters: The direct piecewise affine approach
, Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Vol. 30, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 1714-1723 ; Tahami, F ; Karimpour, A ; Pariz, N ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
The control and stabilization of resonant converters are essential problems in power electronics. The conventional controller design and stability analysis for these converters are based on the linearized averaged model. Nevertheless, the state variables in resonant converters have large ac variations and the validity of the linearized average model is violated. Hence, using large signal and nonaveraged models are necessary for controller design and stability analysis. In this paper, a new hybrid controller is presented that is applicable to dc-dc series resonant converters and use neither averaging nor small signal approximation. The dc-dc resonant converters are inherently switched affine...
A novel probabilistic key management algorithm for large-scale MANETs

Abstract
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have become very interesting during last years, but the security is the most important problem they suffer from. Asymmetric cryptography is a very useful solution to provide a secure environment in multihop networks where intermediate nodes are able to read, drop or change messages before resending them. However, storing all keys in every node by this approach is inefficient, if practically possible, in large-scale MANETs due to some limitations such as memory or process capability. In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic key management algorithm for large-scale MANETs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method which probabilistically uses...

Abstract
This paper proposes a Bayesian model selection framework to determine optimal, parsimonious models for given building structures under ground motion excitation using stochastic filtering. Structural system identification at a regional scale after an earthquake is nominally a monumental task due to its inherently high computational cost. This challenge is currently addressed in the literature by using simplified structural models that bear analytical solutions, such as Timoshenko or shear beams, and shear building models. However, a low computational effort usually leads to an increased prediction error and consequently, a higher model uncertainty. This poses the dilemma of prediction...

Abstract
Iran is engaged in a long-term program to improve and strengthen its position among producers of petroleum in the world. In this regard, many projects are planned and executed in different fields related to oil and gas industry. Prior to investment in new projects, it is essential to understand and manage major corporate risks and their related consequences. Due to nature of petroleum industry, Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) issues are associated with such projects and have always been matters of concern. This paper directs readers towards the integrated HSE approach from concept to affect project construction phase. The process of oil production includes exploration, extraction and...

Abstract
Considering atmospheric wave propagation as a complex phenomenon, it can be represented as a function of variety of parameters such as: properties of atmosphere, boundary conditions, surface characteristics, source related parameters and etc. the aim of this work is to study the propagation of sound mechanisms in troposphere layer and numerical simulation of sound field in order to investigate the wind effect and turbulence in wave propagation. In this manner, the Green’s function parabolic equation (GFPE) is hired to solve the governing equation for sound propagation in a moving inhomogeneous atmosphere. To achieve this, a code is generated using MATLAB software to predict the long range...

Abstract
The onset of fretting fatigue is characterized by material microstructural changes in which the extent of the damage is comparable to grain size, and hence, the microstructure characteristics could have a significant effect on fatigue crack initiation. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element crystal plasticity framework is presented for simulation of the fretting fatigue. Controlled Poisson Voronoi tessellation (CPVT) method is employed to generate the polycrystalline region. In the CPVT method, regularity parameter controls the shape of grains. In this study, the impact of grain size and regularity parameter on crack initiation life and initiation site has been investigated....

Abstract
We revisit the problem of finding k paths with a minimum number of shared edges between two vertices of a graph. An edge is called shared if it is used in more than one of the k paths. We provide a ⌊k/2⌋-approximation algorithm for this problem, improving the best previous approximation factor of k - 1. We also provide the first approximation algorithm for the problem with a sublinear approximation factor of O(n3/4), where n is the number of vertices in the input graph. For sparse graphs, such as bounded-degree and planar graphs, we show that the approximation factor of our algorithm can be improved to O(√n). While the problem is NP-hard, and even hard to approximate to within an O(log n)...
