, Article Scientia Iranica ; January 2006, Scientia Iranica, Vol. 13, No. 1, pp. 14-24 Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering ; 2007, Vol. 1 No. 2, pp 171-189 ; Mahlouji, Hashem ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Khanmohammadi, S ; Sharif Universitty Of Technology
Abstract
There exist various service systems that have hierarchical structure. In hierarchical service networks, facilities at different levels provide different types of services. For example, in health care systems, general centers provide low-level services such as primary health care services, while the specialized hospitals provide high-level services. Because of demand congestion in service networks, location of servers and allocation of demand nodes have a strong impact on the length of queues at servers as well as on the response times to service calls. The thrust of this article is the development of hierarchical location-allocation models for congested systems by employing queueing theory...
Structural Design of a Launch Vehicle with Reusable First Stage
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Haddadpour, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Aerodynamics loads and aeroheating during reentry, are one of the challenging issues in designing One of the main challenges in the design and application of reusable spacecrafts is the aerodynamic and thermal loads acting on their structures during reentry into the atmosphere. For this reason, all the concepts/prototypes presented in the 20th century were either not fully reusable, or were partially canceled, or did not have economic justification. In this report, the aerodynamic loads on the first stage of a launch vehicle during the launch and return phases have been investigated. Due to the fact that the main part of the first stage of the vehicle includes fuel and oxidizer tanks, the...
Comparison of transformer detailed models for fast and very fast transient studies
, Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Volume 23, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 733-741 ; 08858977 (ISSN) ; Vakilian, M ; Gharehpetian, G. B ; Sharif University of Technology
2008
Abstract
The fast and very fast transient overvoltages can endanger the insulation of transformer windings. Therefore, it is necessary to develop models, to study these transients. This paper compares the two well-known multiconductor transmission line (MTL) and lumped parameter detailed (RLC ladder network) models. The high-voltage (HV) winding of a 220/35-kV, 50-MVA transformer has been modeled using these models. The simulation results of the MTL and the RLC ladder network models have been compared with the measurements results in the frequency domain, by application of the Pearson's correlation coefficients. It is shown that the RLC Ladder Network model should be used for fast transient...

Abstract
3D bioprinting is an advanced technology combining cells and bioactive molecules within a single bioscaffold; however, this scaffold cannot change, modify or grow in response to a dynamic implemented environment. Lately, a new era of smart polymers and hydrogels has emerged, which can add another dimension, e.g., time to 3D bioprinting, to address some of the current approaches’ limitations. This concept is indicated as 4D bioprinting. This approach may assist in fabricating tissue-like structures with a configuration and function that mimic the natural tissue. These scaffolds can change and reform as the tissue are transformed with the potential of specific drug or biomolecules released for...

Abstract
The collision of moderately large asteroids and comets also referred to as Near-Earth Objects (NEO's) with earth would have catastrophic consequences. Such events have occurred in the past and may occur again in the future. However, for the first time in known history, humanity may have the technology required to counter this threat. Methods studied for mitigation of this hazard are based on deflecting asteroid's trajectory and are normally divided into two basic categories: high energy impulsive methods, and long-duration low-thrust methods. Two parts of mission to be optimized are the trajectory of spacecraft to reach the target and the deflection strategy which could be analyzed by the...

, Article Transportation Research Record ; Issue 1523 , 1996 , Pages 1-10 ; 03611981 ; Easa, S. M ; Abd El Halim, A. O ; Sharif University of Technology
1996
Abstract
Existing sight distance models are applicable only to two-dimensional (2-D) separate horizontal and vertical alignments or simple elements of these separate alignments (vertical curve, horizontal curve). A new model is presented for determining the available sight distance on 3-D combined horizontal and vertical alignments. The model is based on the curved parametric elements that have been used in the finite element method. The elements presented are rectangular (4-node, 6-node, and 8-node elements) and triangular. These elements are used to represent various features of the highway surface and sight obstructions, including tangents (grades), horizontal curves, vertical curves, traveled...

, Article International Journal of Industrial Engineering ; Vol 15, No 4 (2008), Pages 341-348 ; Javanshir, Hassan ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The one-dimensional cutting stock problem has many applications in industries and during the past few years has been one of the centers of attention among the researchers in the field of applied operations research. In this paper, a revised version of Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) technique is presented to solve this problem. This paper is a sequel to the previous ACO algorithm presented by the authors. In this algorithm, according to some probabilistic rules, artificial ants will select cutting patterns and generate a feasible solution. Computational results show the high efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm for solving one- dimensional cutting stock problem
Control of Car-Like Multi Robots for Following and Hunting of Moving Target
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sayyaadi, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Salarieh, Hassan (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
The main purpose of the present thesis is to establish a decentralized controller for some car–like multi robots to follow and hunt moving targets. Robots are very similar to actual cars considering geometric dimensions, mass and moment of inertia and so on; and outputs of the controller are steering-wheel and driving-wheel torques appropriately. Dynamics of the moving target is so that it escapes from the robots. Robots are equipped with antenna for getting wireless sensory signals, including range and bearing sensors. Kalman filter is used for estimation the target relative position and speed and robots state variables. The controller is designed for doing the above mentioned group...
Noise Covariance Prediction of IMU using ANN in Dead-Reckoning Navigation for Constrained Dynamics
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Salarieh , Hassan (Supervisor) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor)
Abstract
Dead Reckoning navigation, as an infrastructure-independent approach, plays a key role in scenarios where access to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is unavailable; however, its performance is consistently affected by the accumulation of errors in inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors. In this research, a novel approach is proposed to enhance the accuracy of this method. In the first stage, sensor noise modeling is performed using three innovative approaches. The first approach involves a static tuning based on an adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (AEKF). In this method, the discrete process noise covariance matrix is adaptively estimated, and the continuous-time process noise...

Abstract
We report the development of an efficient, customized spherical indentation-based testing method to systematically estimate the hydraulic permeability of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels fabricated in a wide range of mass concentrations and photocrosslinking conditions. Numerical simulations and Biot's theory of poroelasticity were implemented to calibrate our experimental data. We correlated elastic moduli and permeability coefficients with different GelMA concentrations and crosslinking densities. Our model could also predict drug release rates from the GelMA hydrogels and diffusion of biomolecules into the three-dimensional GelMA hydrogels. The results potentially provide a design...

Abstract
A mathematical model has been suggested for the numerical study of blood flow in a vessel due to the pumping action of the heart. Blood is assumed to contain some impurities in the form of chemically reactive species (undergoing a first-order irreversible reaction) and, being a hybrid nanofluid, also contains the nano-sized solid particles, thus forming a homogeneous mixture which is subjected to a pressure gradient (of trigonometric nature) in the horizontal direction. Human vessel is subjected to a transverse magnetic field and is presumed to be filled with plaque which is considered as a porous medium, and is mathematically modeled by applying the Darcy-Forchheimer theory. The nonlinear...
