Multi-disciplinary Analysis of Solar-Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Extended Endurance

    , Article Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering ; 2024 ; 2193567X (ISSN) Golmakani, A ; Saboohi, Z ; Karimi, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2024
    Abstract
Drones are extensively utilized in numerous critical applications today, necessitating high flight endurance for many tasks. As a result, solar unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained considerable attention from researchers. This study presents the design of two UAVs with distinct wing configurations, both equipped with an equal number of solar cells. A numerical approach is employed to model these UAVs and calculate their aerodynamic coefficients. The power required for sustained level flight is determined using established aerodynamic equations. Additionally, solar cells are simulated in MATLAB/Simulink to investigate the impact of solar radiation on cell output power, current, and...

A computational approach to heat transfer and ablation in space capsule insulation

    , Article Case Studies in Thermal Engineering ; Volume 53 , 2024 ; 2214157X (ISSN) Saboohi, Z ; Razmjooei, M ; Karimi, N ; Golmakani, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, the heat transfers and ablation phenomena of thermal insulations utilized in manned space capsules are investigated. In this regard, by collecting and solving the equations related to ablation insulations, a computer program has been developed that is able to predict the thermal response of these insulations under various operating conditions. This approach considers mass and heat transfer equations in two-dimensional solid bodies. To solve these equations, finite volume method and implicit formulation for time dependence have been used. The reaction equation, written in the form of Arrhenius, is solved using the Runge-Kutta method, and the density and the flux of the gas...

Fault Diagnosis of Rotating Machinery using Multi-Sensor Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hekmat Golmakani, Saeed (Author) ; Arghand, Hesamoddin (Supervisor) ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vibration signals have been used for fault diagnosis frequently. These signals are captured using sensors, which are mounted on different locations of the equipment. Using data captured from different locations of the equipment, will result in roubustness of the fault diagnosis model. But sometimes the predictions of sensors mounted on different locations, happen to conflict. These conflicts among sources of information, make it hard to decide about the overal health state of the equipment. In fact, these conflicts causes a kind of uncertainty called epistemic uncertainty. A powerful mathematical framework for managing epistemic uncertainties, is Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. An...

Numerical Investigation of the Effect of Dust on the Performance of a H-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golmakani, Atousa (Author) ; Taeibi Rahni, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Salimi, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, due to the increase in energy demand and the limitations of using fossil fuels, renewable energy plays an important role in the world's energy supply. Wind turbines generate electrical power using the kinetic energy of the wind. This research investigates the effects of dust and particles on the flow in a vertical axis wind turbine blades. The performance of a H-type vertical axis wind turbine in dusty flow was numerically investigated in two and three dimensions. The effects of two dimensionless numbers (Stokes and particle loading) on the turbine’s aerodynamics and output power were examined. In addition, the erosion rate of turbine blades due to dust particles and turbine...

Numerical Modeling of Surgical Lights Effects on the Operating Room Enviroment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Golmakani, Shaya (Author) ; Saeeidi, Mohammad Hassan (Co-Advisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Co-Advisor) ; Sani, Mahdi (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Cleanrooms have a broad scope of applications from electronics, pharmacy, biotechnology to hospital industries, and are susceptible to fine and ultra-fine particles. In this work operating room in the category of hospital applications is chosen. Airborne particles in the operating room depends on many factors such as room geometry, inlet and outlet design, air displacement rate, obstacles, etc. Surgical light is one of the most critical obstacles in the operating room as it is upstream to the surgery zone. The study presented in this thesis aimed to numerically investigate the influence of radiation emitted from the medical lamps on the indoor airflow quality in operating room environment....
